Now that I have all three wings framed up, I decided to stack them up and check all my center lines. It is very important that the inner wing struts are straight.

Looks good, so now when the vendor gets the fitting done, I can install them then finish framing the wings.
While I had them all together I decided to put them on Miss Mary's food scale for a weight check. As you can see 5lb-5 7/8oz, not bad.

I aready had the cowl primed and wet sanded, so decided to go ahead and paint it in the Jasta Boelcke scheme.
A couple little sags in the black paint, so will let it cure a few days then lightly sand them out before clear coat.

Looks great Del. I think I am going to start on the GTM cowl for my D VIII this week. I just have to get my mind ready for all those little holes

"FrankenFokker"................Just for Fun

This is what could happen when you're working on a 1/3 scale Dr.1 & DVII at the same time. (Slow weekend)

Hey Del... The Fedx truck showed up with some goodies today... I have to admit that laser cutter is just awesome... I grabbed the parts and test fitted all the different rivets, screws, etc.... crossing my fingers hoping that everything would fit. Great news, everything fits just fine. Whew... I was a wee-bit concerned... Here are some photos, see what you can recognize. I will be sending these fiitings, mating hardware and the fuselage parts here shortly... - Glenn

Hi Del, Hi Dale!

Del, your FrankenFokker looks cool (someone else coined that phrase, I am not creative enough)

Dale! Will you ever finish that DVIII?! I have wrecked two since you started building yours (hmmm, does that mean he is a miticulous builder or I am a poor flyer? )

Ooohhh, Glenn, I am jealous. I am going to make all those pieces for my 1/3rd scale Sopwith Triplane by hand

Del, looks like some fun toys coming your way.

Propnut, Sometimes I wonder the same thing. Meticulous, NO, slow, YES. Fortunately, (or unfortunately) I have more hobbies, likes and commitments (business and otherwise) than building R/C planes. Sometimes I really envy you guys that can build and complete a kit in a fairly short period of time. Maybe when I can retire.

Hey Glenn..........those parts look really great, I think I can find a place for all of them. With the inner wing strut fittings I can then finish framing up the wings. Looking forward to building the fuse. with the dowls.

Ok, I got those hardware parts today. Glenn's got a first class vendor, they're really nice.
I'll start with the strut fittings tomorrow, I want to get the wings finished framed up.
Glenn says that the kit price will be $795.oo and will have around 1200 parts.
Going to be a great kit and he will try to have some at Toledo.
Anyone interested contact Glenn.
He is finalizing the fuse. plans and parts and hopes to get them out to me next week. Then he will start working on the instruction manual and start putting kits together.
The plan is to have the plane "in the bones" in Glenn's booth at Toledo next month. It's going to be an exciting weekend.
Later

You can see that I had to put a second ply pad for the fitting. After laying out and marking the C/L, noticed that it looked too far out. Glenn rechecked the dimentions and seen that we needed to move them in some. The kit will reflect the correct dimention.
Now I can locate the strut fitting on the centerline that I made earlier. You center the mounting holes on the spar, I set my square to make sure that I got them all the same. Put a little spot of thin CA to hold it.

Next I double checked to make sure the fitting was square with the spar. A little more CA just to hold in place.

To make a long drill I CA'd it into a piece of brass tubing, still wasn't long enough so CA'd the brass tube into a piece of alum. tubing. (Gotta make do with what you have).

Next used a small C-clamp to make sure it didn't move while drilling the hole. Used the provided 4-40x 5/8 screw and star washer nut to hold in place while drilling the second hole.

A couple shots of one end done with the clevis pin.

The same fittings are used for the bottom wing plus the anchors for the tip skids. The fittings for the center wing are longer as they come out both top and bottom. The same proceedure will work on them.
With all the fitting in place I can them go back and close up the spar with the shear webbing, put the ply saw tooth leading edge on and then finish the cap stripping.

Ok, here's a couple shots of the top wing, strut fittings in, the rest of the shear webbing and all the sawtooth leading edge ply. Also finished the cap strips and some of the gussets in the aileron bays.

I got parts for the fuse. yesterday, so I'll be setting the wings aside to start framing the fuse. up.
The reason I'm jumping around a little is Toledo is only five weeks off and I want to have as much framed up as possable. We'll have it on display in Glenn's booth however much is done.
I'll be framing up the fuse. with 5/16" hardwood dowels. I think you'll be given the option of using dowels or square stock. I haven't used dowels for framing before, so will be a new experiance. Hey, I'm up for the
challange.
I went to Lowes and got some 5/16 x 48" dowels. That way you don't have a splice in the longerons.
Will post some pics of the parts a little later.

Here's a couple shots trial fitting the engine to firewall. Lots of holes to promote good air flow across the cyl. heads.
Once I get the firewall positioned in the fuselage, then I can figure out what kind of muffler I have room for. Probably come up with something in Toledo.

Here we have the ply forward fuse. support and bottom fuse. belly support. They are laminated with what is called out as 1/4 and 1/8 parts. I'd say they are metric because when glued together the part is 5/16 thick which is what the longerons are.........Just the right size.

This is what I like about Cad Drawings and Laser cut parts. Just lay the part over the drawing and its a perfect fit.

Next I started adding and cutting the dowels to fit. I like to do a set up like a welding fixture, that way you know the second side will be exactly like the first one.
Some builders like to build the first one and with blocks as guides lay down a sheet of wax paper and build the second one on top of the first............What ever works best for you, just getting them both the same and straight is what's important.

Well, I think I'll hang it up for the night, Miss Mary will be home from work soon, then we'll catch the next installment of "Survivor". Back at it tomorrow.

Del, I got a questions what kind of work bench is that? What I mean is what do you have on top of the bench to allow for pinning or in this case the screws? I use a door with pink insulation board, I dont think it will support those screws?

GB.....my bench is a kitchen counter top that I got at Lowes, set it on a 2x4 frame, leveled it as good as I could. I then siliconed celing tile,(smooth side up). That way I can use pins or screws.

I took the idea from Glenn's DVI build and notched the longerons to "key" in the uprights. Made the joints as tight as I could for better glue adhesion. Tacked it all up with thin CA then went back over it all with thick. Will reinforce the front area with epoxie.

Hey Del, looks great. THe screws are a great idea for round stock. Instead of ceiling tile, you might think about Homosote, an insulating fiber board also found at most big home improvement stores. It comes in 4x8 sheets usually 3/4 or 1/2 inch thick. It works perfect with either pins or screws, smooth on two sides so you can flip it when it gets damaged.
