Status: offline 		To anyone who has assembled any of the WorldModels 46 size P-51s:

The fiberglass simulated air scoop on my "Flying Undertaker" is slightly warped and doesn't mount flush with the bottom of the fuse.

I was wondering if this is an inherent characteristic of its manufacturing process or if I just have a bad one which should be replaced.

I'd like to know before I spend the time and effort to mail it back to them in CA.

Status: offline 		I assembled one of these a few weeks back and my scoop fitted flush with the bottom of the fuselage, but it did not sit down fully on the bottom of the wing.

Warped up front or do you think the pins were mounted too high or the holes drilled too low? Probably not as noticeable though being tucked under the wing. Did you decide to keep it and let it go or ask for a replacement?
With mine, there'd be a gap from the trailing edge of the wing to the end of the scoop. Besides, the warp puts a lot of strain on the fuse at the screwdown point. I'll probably mail it back to them and see if they'll replace it.

I did decide to keep it as being right under the wing it was not very noticeable. The front part of the scoop does not touch the wing anyway so it didn't look too bad.

The back part of the scoop sat down on the fuselage quite well and the pins lined up into the holes, but the bottom of the wing was just too far away for the scoop to touch it at the back end.

Status: offline 		I think I could live with the way yours looks, but with the flaw on mine is noticeable enough that it would look like crap....at least to me. For $189 I don't want mine to look like a hack job.

BTW, which version do you have? I'm taking a little extra time to make mine more accurate in relation to the real Flying Undertaker. I've added 2 black fuse bands (similar to ETO invasion stripes), will add two diagonal yellow stripes under the canopy and a kill flag panel with 8 jap flags on it. A friend of mine says it's a lot of work for something that could "go in" at any time, but I hate poorly or incompletely done replicas.

Status: offline 		I also have the silver Flying Undertaker version and talking about 'going in' it did just that last Sunday.

I contemplated adding some extra detailing when I first got the plane and then decided against it due to the fact I really wanted to fly the thing and didn't want to spend the extra time doing it.

I had a problem with mine last Sunday when I had a 'deadstick' on my engine. It was my fault as I knew I needed to land but somebody was messing around trying to start and take-off on the runway, so I circled around for a bit. I really should have booted them off the runway and landed.

But anyway I ran out of fuel and the OS FS-70 II stopped (no other deadsticks prior to this) and I started a gentle turn to head back towards the runway to land and the plane entered into a spin and I lost control. It crashed into a fairly muddy wet part of our field and luckily did very little damage.

The cowl was cracked and one retract was ripped out of the wing and the other was badly bent.

The retract that was ripped out damaged the retract mount and also part of the underside of the wing. I know if I had been thinking a little faster I should have retracted the wheels. But it all happened so fast I had no time.

When the plane was under power it was a joy to fly. I really enjoyed it. It looked great in the air and sounded great with the 4-stroke.

It shouldn't take too much effort to repair mine but it could have been a lot worse.

Just a heads up to make sure you be very careful if you are confronted with a deadstick.

Status: offline 		Maverick, I put mine in on January 1st this year. I also had the flying undertaker, I have reapired the wings, and replaced the bent gear. I couldnt think fast enough to retract em. My mistake.
I now also have Miss America and she flies great. I am only running a Thunder Tiger .46 Pro, but still gets from one end of the field to the other in a hurry.

Status: offline 		Yes, mine will be repaired also. But it has to take a back seat for a while as my Somethin' Extra is being built on the bench right now. When I finish this I will put the P-51 back on the bench and do the repairs.

Sorry to hear about the mishaps...I've been warned about its low speed flight envelope. I've also assembled the Rambler and it is a sweet looking plane.

The Rambler is powered by an OS46FX while a Saito72 four stroke is awaiting mounting in the P51. Both will have to wait for spring. Unlike you guys, flying weather was over for us months ago... not counting the unusual warmth thru mid-December and last week as well.

Will prolly have to wait now that I have a WM Corsair.
Pete, sorry about bad weather, I was born in Michigan and
actually love it back there, but like us west coasters we
have pretty mch decent weather year round for these
outdoor activities.
