So im stuck between the CX and CP for a first heli. I'm an experienced fixed wing pilot and do have a sim (g3). I want a CP but want to also start off on a successful learning curve. I'm afraid I'll be bored with the CX quickly. I tought myself to fly fixed wing and got through the learning curve without really even destroying a model- I know the heli learning curve will be different.

So- with alot of sim time can I hope to be successful with the CP? Are there other models I should be considering? I really want a collective pitch heli from the get go. advise? flames?

You can learn to fly with the CP, its just not as easy to hover and is faster then the CX. I'm learning on a CP, and i think i'm doing ok so far.

You won't get bored with the Blade CX.

I had the same dilemna as you........CX or CP for first micro-heli?.

I owned a "Cricket" 20 years ago that I hovered successfully a few times, then sold. I've flown planes for 30 years. I've gotten to where I can autorotate most of the heli's on my G2 simulator...nose-in hover, a little bit of 3D with the "IonX" on the Hobby shop's G3 simulator.

I'm not bored with the CX. I'll always have one around, I figure.

The CX was chosen because my very experienced hobby shop owner and his very experienced employee told me they still enjoy the CX because they can fly it in very small areas and still have fun, and they recommended I get it. They said they would never fly the CP in the same places that the CX flies.

Also, I figure my friends and family will some day ask me if they can fly my 'toy'. With the CX, I can put the training gear on it, put my stock-length stabilizer bar on it, put the control rods back to the 'stock' position on the servo horns, and say "...yes, you should try flying this thing!...".

There's alway time later for a CP, or maybe a "T-Rex"

....my opinion. DAVE

I LOVE my CX.

My experience includes 4 years of nitro planes, and few months of a nitro collective pitch heli (shuttle 30 sized)- that i could hover tail/nose in and forward flight. This was about 6 years ago and then i left the hobby, only to return recently when my brother raved about his blade cx.

I figured I would be easily bored by the CX, Given my previous heli experience. BUT I LOVE my CX

i WANTED a CP, but as luck would have it my LHS didnt have it in stock and i wanted something right away. I figured it would be something to mess around with before the Blade CP came in. Plus i could let friends fly it. Since then, I have figured out that I am not as good a pilot as i thought i was, and learned it VERY cheap.
advantages:
1) THE CX is very durable, and VERY cheap to repair. It will tolerate abuse that I remember would make me spend a TON of time and money fixing on my old nitro heli.
2) BEST part is that it is VERY fun. Its relatively easy to fly which makes for a big FUN factor. Just because it is easier, doesn't mean it won't be fun.
3) flying indoors is a snap.

something to consider;- from reading thread's on the TREX sub-forum:
1) Most hard core guys reccomend the CP to learn on because it will teach you the basics. and it is much cheaper to repair than the more serious helis like the mx400 or trex. The one or two that commented on the CX, was that it really didn't teach much about flying the "serious" heli's. from my experience, this isn't quite true. I think the CX can teach you a lot about hovering (tail in, nose in, side in) and race track, figure 8's, ground effect. prolly not great for forward flight though. The CP, from what i gather from reading, is VERY skittish. ppl who graduate from the CP to TREX find the upgrade very nice since the expenisve heli's are built better. But i suspect that's is why people consider the CX not that great for learning on because it is VERY stable.

2) The CX does not fly well outdoors unless there is ZERO wind.

if your objective is to have fun, I recommend the CX with no reservation. Upgrade to the CP later. even when you becaome a heli guru, i suspect you will still love your CX because its easy to fly and you can easily fly indoors. i don't know how much the serious heli fliers fly in their livingroom, but i suspect its not too much.

if your goal is to learn as quickly as possible, it MIGHT be better to go with a blade cp, IF you don't spend too much time repairing and not enough time behind the stick.

just my opinion

CX is a wonderful flyer, I do still nip a blade as new and advancing to more precision flying, tight landings, zooming around still need more work...is not an outside flyer as requires dead calm, but have ventrued out several times for the extra room during trial period, infact more outside than inside todate, just wait for calm conditions...

Advancing to a T-Rex 450X, wanted to go w/Blade CP but heard are not quite as stable etc,

Pic rare inside flying...

MK,

I agree with all the guys, the CX and CP are both darn good helis. And as you mentioned there is a learning curve, regardless which one you decide on. (How about 1 of each)

I also, flew fixed wings for 5 years or so, but the heli world is a totally different ball game. I always say, it's like balancing a marble on a pane of glass. Especially the standard helis, like the CP. The CX is a coaxial flyer and by design is very stable.

Also, if cost is a factor, the CX & CP is an inexpensive way to go, plus parts are easy available at most hobby shops and they too are extremely reasonable. With the CX & CP, they are ready to fly, tranmitter, battery, battery charger are all included in the initial investment. Go to web site hobbyzone.com and check out there prices on the helis and the parts. For around $200, you'll be off and flying. Go slow and take your time to understand the whole process.

Which ever one you get, they are not ready to fly out of the box. Go through the manuals page by page, set up is the key factor.

If you have anymore questions or need anymore help let us know.

Best of luck, let us know what you decide on.

I would highly suggest the CX. I thought I was so smart, that I could just pick up the CP and be Mr. Heli King in no time. Four or five blades later, and probably about 50 bucks in other random parts, I shelved it and picked up a CX. It's a ton of fun.

A couple months down the road when you can touch down on a dime maybe switch to the CP. I fly two of the battery packs, one after the other, and when one is charged up I fly it again, and have been doing that for the last month or so straight as I can find the time. The CX blades replace like child's play, and is much more forgiving for crashes.

Thanks for the input all. I decided to go with the CP. I'm going to log some more sim time before giving the CP a shot. In the meanwhile I may run over to the LHS to see if perhaps they have a random CX sitting on the shelf
