Just a quick post to get the weekend started:

I have recently learned two things that i should probably share with each of you...

1) Searching google for "24 inch male doll" does NOT produce the intended results....or...at least, they weren't MY intended results.

2) When a friend calls...EVEN if he's an RC friend...and asks "Whassup??", it's probably best to make sure he's aware of your current project status before you answer "Lubing up my plug with cold vaseline".

I'm off to the Library with a stack of MA's, and then to Wal Mart for brushes and such.

Well, let's see here:

First of all, the new Cowl Mark III is laid up, curing as we speak. Apparently practice really DOES help...this is absolutely the cleanest smoothest, slickest fiberglassing I've EVER done. Now we just have to see how it comes off the plug!

Bipe Flyer : Yeah cold vaseline...sounds unpleasant doesn't it?

I have the Dively canopy that might work or help in making one.I donated my short kit to the other guys and sent it to Bill.If this will help you and Bill, let me know.

Joe, that's a terrific offer. Much obliged! See my e-mail.

Just an update on the days work:

The cowl came out pretty nicely I think...and yes, this one came off the plug too, so just a bit of filling/sanding, and I can use this plug to form another cowl for Stickbuilder's group, if desired. I wouldn't call the cowl 'professional", but it's certainly workable, and with a bit of sanding and patience, should come out just fine.

Also got the instrument package from JTEC today, so got some time in on the instrument panel.

I regret to say that, even at a mere $14, the JTEC instruments are pretty disappointing. The process began with JTEC e-mailing me telling me the item would be shipped on Monday. When I called them yesterday to ask why it hadn't arrived, i was told it asn't shipped until Wednesday, despite no notice of this change.

Once I finally received the kit, I find that the printing is poor quality, and the "sheets of plastic bezels" aren't bezels at all...they're nothing more than a sheet of clear plastic. Perhaps someone should point out to JTEC that a bezel is defined as a "The surface ring on the watch that surrounds and holds the crystal in place" or, even more specific, "The crimped edge of metal that secures the glass face to an instrument." A bezel is certainly NOT the glass itself, nor is it a piece of plastic designed to mimic glass. To compound matters, despite coming with "eighty-three different gauges", there's a distinct LACK of such common gauges as EGT, CHT, etc. This could be because an item sold on a model AVIATION website includes 10 or so AUTOMOBILE gauges.

All in all, the JTEC instrument kit just really isn't a top notch product, and not one I'll recommend or use in the future.

However, I was able to make a "passable" instrument panel out of it I think...the picture really isn't all that hot, but you get the idea...sadly, you CAN'T see the best feature of the instrument panel...that rectangle in the middle is a copy of the actual Arresti diagram in Jim's plane this year at Tullahoma.

Gordon,

I think that I can make that cowl work for our build too. Did I see that Joe has the Divley canopy? If it is a decent fit, and if you know which Divley part it is, please let me know.

Bill,

I just fired off an e-mail to Joe, suggesting he offer the canopy to your gang first. You guys are the ones trying to make a deadline, and also the ones with a "noble cause" as it ere...I think it more appropriate that the offer go your way, if Joe's agreeable.

As you say, however, if you or Jow happen to find out if that's a particular Dively part that can be ordered, I sure would appreciate the info.

As for the cowl, no sweat...I'll try to get another one done up this week, and send it your way. As I say, it's certianly not professional, but I think it's very usable with a bit of sanding and patience. Hope it works for you.

I'll finally pipe in here. That cowl looks pretty good. I've use the pantyhose trick that was mentioned earlier and it worked great. I'm gonna build a Weeks Solutions after the first of the year, so some of this stuff actually helps. As I've said, I've never built a fatty from plans and can't wait to get started...I've just got several more profiles to finish first!

welcome to the madness, wessco.

i tried the panty-hose trick yesterday, and utterly failed to have any clue how it worked. apparently, i'm just not that bright. I couldn't get the hose to stretch over the cowl...that's a BIG cowl, and, to be honest, I think I'm probably GLAD they don't make hosiery that large.

In any event, I think things came out ok. i'd be interestd to know what fundamental trick of panty-hose-fiberglassing I was missing though.

Joe,

By all means, send it to Gordon. He is ready for it. I'm waiting on F-1, and F-2 from Ckangaroo, so the fuse is not framed up yet. If it works on his build, I'll order one for us from Bob Divley. Thanks

Thanks, Bill...I'll see how it works out. I'll be in touch, Joe.
