Lee and Carl,

Well, I got into a pretty smooth hover using the DX7, 6100, and my cheapie servos and esc - very basic, but the best I've done so far. By the way, I mounted the 6100 on the front of the Gyro with some good double sided tape. This allowed me to push the MegaPower all the way back in the tray. Worked out pretty well.

Then, I was going to take off again and I noticed the tail rotor wasn't spinning. The front gear on the tail drive shaft had gone missing. If any of you guys find it, please send it back. Thx.

Really like the timer in the DX7. I set it in countdown mode for 5 mins. and it starts beeping each of the last 10 secs. While hovering, I don't want to overheat the motor, but it still gets pretty warm.

Funny thing - I was in such a hurry to fly after the rebuild that I just ran outside and spun her up. It wasn't until after I had to stop because of the missing gear that I noticed I had forgotten the training wheels. It was kind of like when you learn to ride a bike, pedalling away and you look back to find that Dad had stopped pushing a block back!!

Hi,
Is everybody else thinks it's normal to have a small vibration at low rpm?
Just want to make sure that I dont fly with a vibration that is not suppose to be there.
Thanks.

Spektrum charging update for the DX7:

----------------------------
The Spektrum team realizes that the charger included in the DX7 is not optimal for charging the Tx battery in a convenient, overnight fashion. Although the current charger works adequately with additional charge time, future production will include the higher rate charger as referenced in the instruction manual. If you intend to use the 50mah charger, please increase the charge time to 30hrs for the Tx and 22hrs for the Rx.
----------------------------

I had min on the charger for 12 hrs. on Tuesday and 12 hrs. yesterday, and it is up to 11.6v - the charge bar is showing about 75%.

Any idea what the full charge is?

Steve

Not familiar with the DX but if it uses a 3-cell lipoly battery it would be 12.6 volts fully charged, hot off the charger, slightly less resting voltage.

DX7 uses 1500 ma NMH . I use my old Hobbico fast field charger. A charge lasts 2 or 3 full flying sessions.

I am getting ready to buy a Falcon 3D I have a honeybee FP that I have had for 4 months. What would be some good tool choices to work on this bird? I think I read some where that you should use Japanese type phillips screwdrivers they fit the screws. Thanks for any help on this

I use a set of small yellow Stanley screwdrivers that I bought at wallmart. It has 3 phillips and 3 flat heads and costs about 5 dollars. These seem to be very high quality and have worked really well for me. They are the perfect sizes so you won't strip out the heads on your screws. That is very important otherwise you will strip the heads. I replaced most of my phiilips with SS hex head screws since I really don't like dealing with phillips if I don't have to and the chinese screws that come with it are kinda crappy. Costs only a few bucks and is a good upgrade.

Jeff:
Grind the poiny tip off the regular Phillips and it will work fine Just needs a touch with a grinder or Dremel.

GREAT NEWS!!! Hobby Lobby has just reduced there pricing on all of there Jeti speed controllers and also the Spin Box. From looking at the prices it appears to be about a 50% reduction in price. This can amount to a huge savings if you want to put a programmable speed controller in your Falcon or other helicopter. I'm running Several of the Spins in various helicopters, i.e., Eco 8 Royal, two Dragnous II's, ESky, E-Smart 550 and they all work beautifully.

Jeff,

You should also get a set of good quality metric hex drivers. You will need a 1.5mm and up. Most sets consist of 5 drivers. I have two sets - one with ball tips, which are nice for starting the screws; and one without ball tips, which are good for tightening.

You might want to consider getting the following hardware (10 or so of each should be fine):

I get mine from http://rtlfasteners.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=RF

3x3mm set screws
2x6mm socket head cap screws
2.5x6mm socket head cap screws

And, of course a minimal set of spare parts from (except where noted) either http://www.hobby-lobby.com/ falcon parts.htm or http://www.ka-planes.com/helicopters__2_?b=1 :
---------------------------------------
6007 - spindle shaft (get these http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=38_39_40&products_id=132)
6008 - Tail rotor hub and shaft
6011 - Tail rotor blades
6018 - Tailfin set

6022 - Tailboom (depending on your skill level, you may need a few of these. Your options are to pay $13.40 or $11.48 from above; or, to get Easton 2213 xx75 arrow shafts - caveat being that I cannot confirm these work, but others in this thread say they do. I just ordered a dozen Easton 2213 Platinum Plus shafts for $43.95, and I can cut two booms from each shaft. To-date I have replaced four booms, so obviously I should have done this from the beginning.)

6023 - Tail drive shaft (you may need a few of these)
6029 - Tailboom reinforcement struts
6030 - Bearings 8x3x4mm, 4 (I get all my bearings here http://bocabearings.com/main1.aspx?p=quicksearchbearing )
6031 - Main rotor shaft (you may need a few of these)
6032 - Flybar (a few of these)
6037 - Tail pushrod
6049 - Tail gearbox assembly

Main Blades - reasonably priced main blades are a bit of a problem because they're an odd size at 300mm. I've been using these $10 290's http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=117_120&products_id=578 and they work fine, but currently out of stock. They are heavier and stiffer than the stock, so I think they do contribute to bending more main shafts when crashing. Other guys have been going for 315's, but I find they contact the tail blades on hard landings, contributing to tail problems. Choose your own compromise.

As Carl suggests below, you might want to consider getting some 2100mah batteries. I have been using these http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=1817 , but unfortunately again out of stock. When choosing batteries the critical dimension is the width - it cannot exceed 35mm, 34 is better, but 35 is an absolute maximum. And, when going to this longer battery, you will need to rotate the rx 90 degs. so the battery can slide back farther to help with balancing the heli; and, even then it will be a bit nose heavy.
--------------------------------------------

Jeff, I am a slow-learning newbie, but these recommendations are based on my personal experience to the best of my recollection.

Also, while there's lots and lots of help both here and at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=642411&page=141 , you will find that "out-of-stock" is kind of a way of life with the Falcon , so a word to the wise on spares - STOCK UP WHILE THEY GOT EM!!

Hope this helps.

Steve

Steve,

That is an excellent list and the only thing I might add, if you can afford it, is a spare Falcon 3D.

Oh, and several 2100MaH LiPo batteries.

I got these drivers. http://www.espritmodel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4664 They're adjustable length and have a ball head on one end and a regular head on the other so you get both for one price. They are millions of times better than the L wrenches I have been using for years. I have taken out some very small locktited set screws that required a ton of force and these have held perfect and never rounded off or stripped a screw.

Food for thought

Last week I had a Jeti 40 esc go up in smoke.Yesterday I called HL to see if I had any options.I bought it off of ebay so I really did not expect any support.
What I was told is they(HL) lost sole distribution of the line.Previous to this they would have sold me a replacement at half retail price.
What you might be seeing with this big price reduction is the clearing of inventory to discontinue the line altogether and hence support.
This is just speculation on my part.I have no ill will against Jeti or HL.

Lee and Carl,

I finally got smart (well......smartER!!) and saved the above to a word file for future Falcon eers.

Lee,

I wish I had known about those before I got mine. The only thing - it is missing the 1.5mm, which I find I used the most. I guess you just bought one seperately?

Steve

Hmm I don't think I really used any other ones other than those in the set. Which screws are 1.5mm head? Maybe I used one of my older wrenches for the 1.5mm. Can't remember but I think almost all of them I use are in the set but I have replaced most of the hardware on my falcon so who knows.

Hi,

Can anyone help with a bit of a problem? I had a pretty nasty crash and bent the main shaft and tail boom and a few other bits and pieces. It's all back together now with the blades balanced and tracking straight but as soon as I take off it wants to go to the left (looking from behind) so I can't hover, it just slides left along the ground on it training legs. Does anyone have any ideas what to look at. Everything I have checked seems to be ok, I'm a bit lost.

Also can you tell me what your gy401 gyros are set to roughly? (Delay and limit)

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Steve,

You mentioned an alternative replacement tailboom for the falcon . An Eastern 2213. Do you have anymore information? I can't find that type of helicopter anywhere. Does anyone know if these are available in England?

Thanks,
Chris

Lee,

Tail rotor hub, all of the collets holding the main shaft, plus I have replaced my motor mounts, landing gear mounts, and the set screw holding the tail gear set to the boom.

If you have never replaced the main shaft, my hat goes off to you for superior flying!!

Chris,

It almost has to be the swash leaning to the left or the heli being out of balance, yes?

I pm'ed you with info on the tail boom thing.

Steve

Steve,

I haven't crashed it yet. Just been taking it slow and hovering around mostly. It's been real windy here so I don't get much flying time outside. I got frustrated the other day because of windy conditions so I fired it up in my living room. Low and behold I was able to hover it in a small space. Shocked the heck outta me. After about 30-40 seconds of hovering it creates so much wind that the heli really wants to go all over but I have been able to keep it steady for a little over a minute before I got scared of hitting something and brought it down again. I think this will help my chops some since I'm really learning to control the heli with little room for error. It's not too bad today so I might be able to get out of work a little early and fly outside.

Steve,

No the heli is perfectly balanced and the swash is level. With all the settings neutral it stays very level but drifts to the left, when I try to correct it the heli wants to tip to the right, there seems to be no balance between it sliding left and being able to hover. I assume the flybar paddles are meant to be set neutral??

Well once i got my falcon back up in the air i have once again another problem. I was flying for about 10 mins on my 2100 mah pack. The next time i started the engine up it kinda sputtered ( i had to bring the throttle down and back up. It worked normally. about 2 mins into flight. I smelled some burning and my heli just cut off but my servos still worked. If i try to give it throttle again it will start up and cut off. I dont think its the speed controller i think it is the motor. The motor gets too hot (over 200F). The motor is where the smell is coming from. My question is do you thinkg my speed controler is shot also?
