The bubble level works great. Never had a problem using it. Remember, the object is not to set the pitch on your paddles but to make sure they are level when your swashplate is level, basically.

Here is document on how to make your own pitch gauge. Works great and can be modified to suit most every need.

Yeah i used a pitch gauge on each blade to get them dead level, plus it helps that they are fiber rather than the stock woodies! They measure 280mm and pre-balanced.
Here is a pic

I am looking for someone who can tell me the proper position of the collars on the main shaft. These collars have a lip on one side. I know the bottom one has the lip pointing up the top collar, the lip points up. I need to know if the collar below the main gear set has the lip againt the autorotation bearing and if the collar above the main gear set has the lip against it or away from it. If someone could verify the position of all four collar lips this would greatly help me.

Thanks

Larry,

Without looking at mine I can tell you that the lip should always ride against the bearing. This keeps the collar riding on the inner race of the bearing. That is another way to think about it, the lip should always ride against the inner race of the bearing.

Hope that helps.

Carl,

Thanks for the info. If you look at page 15 in the manual , the collar above the gear set appears as the lip is away from the bearing. Can you take a look at yours to see if all the collars are against any bearings? I also have had a problem with the ball links fitting tightly on the swash plate, have you had any problems with the swash plate? I have tried other ball links, it must be a bad swash plate when it was molded. I guess I should order the upgraded one. Have you used the upgrade swash plate? Any problems with it? Will the swash plate for the trex fit the falcon ? Do the links fit it tightly?

Larry

General Information for the FALCON . I just replaced all the small screws which hold the frame halves together. I replaced them with 2-56 stainless steele bolts and aircraft locking nuts. No more stripped screws. You can order them through MICOFASTNERS, you will need 20. Cost around 5.00. This adds to the structure stenght of the heli.

Hi Carl,
I ordered a blade balancer and a pitch meter today from heli direct.
Some place here I do have a very tiny bubble meter and I guess I can use that for the paddles.
Right now i'm trying to find out why my gyro on the HBK blinks.
I have all controls but the tail rotor.

Larry,

The manual is wrong or the picture is not clear. You do not put shaft collars on with the large surface riding on the bearings. Doing that would defeat part of the purpose for the collar and that is why the lip is on the collar, so it rides on the bearing race.

The bearings you need for the tail are 8x3x4mm. This bearing is the same as used in the blade grips.

Here are some pictures of my Falcon and the mods I have done so far.

Carl

Actually the moniker is quickster47 and not QuickSilver. QuickSilver was one of the great bands of the 60s. You know, my time period when I was just out of college, going to Viet Nam and thinking about peace and love and the Viet Cong. Sorry, but I digress.

Anyway, this modification is for those who would like to change the present configuration of their Falcon 3D head to a TRex style caged/closed flybar head. About the time I started working on this change I posted an inquiry as to whether or not there is any definite advantage to a caged/closed flybar head. From the replies it would appear that the biggest advantage is simply that it is much easier to setup than the stock Falcon flybar scheme, which is just like the Shogun V1/V2 and several other helis.

At the same time I was doing this I also changed out the plastic Falcon blade grips to some Shogun aluminum bling pieces from MicroHeli. Main reason for doing this is two fold. 1) Get rid of the plastic and 2) the MicroHeli pieces use thrust bearings in the blade grips. Since early on in my heli flying career I have always preferred having thrust bearings in the blade grips just like the big gassers and real helis.

Prices and parts are listed below.

Align generic parts
$3.79 HS1184 Flybar Rod 220mm (2 pieces)
$1.89 HS1194 Flybar Weight Set (2 pieces)
$6.79 HS1046 3K Flybar Paddle

Align plastic parts
$11.79 HS1072 SF Mixing Lever Set
$8.79 HS1086 Flybar Control Set

Align metal parts
$17.89 HS1207-78 Align Flybar Seesaw Holder (Gray)
$27.49 HS1215-78 Align Metal Control Levers (Gray)
$18.89 HS1081-78 Align Metal Aileron Flybar Frame (Gray)

Micro Heli www.microheli.com
$19.99 MH-4023 Aileron Lever - SHOGUN/SHOGUN V2
$44.99 MH-4012V2 UNI Swashplate Version 2 - SHOGUN
$29.99 MH-4002MBG QNC Main Blade Grips - SHOGUN/SHOGUN V2

Heli Direct www.helidirect.com
$9.99 HDX300-UGE12 HDX300 CNC Tail Pitch Slider
$18.00 HDX300-UGE04 HDX300 CNC Tail Rotor System
$9.00 UGA11 Shogun/Walkera/3DX400 CNC Elevator Arms

Hobby Lobby Falcon Upgrades
$22.80 ATS8008 Aluminum Tail Gearbox and Slider

My time - priceless

It should also be noted that the Falcon 3D balls are 4.45mm. And I just don't know why these manufacturers can't settle in on one ball size. It sure would make it easier on you and me and lots of others. But then I guess they wouldn't get to sell all those extra pieces for which we end up paying a fortune to keep our spares inventory at a suitable level. Anyway, I had some spare 4.45mm balls left over from one of my Shogun upgrades so I used them on the mixing lever arms because I wanted to stay pretty much stock Falcon . I did have to use two TRex size ball links on the two balls in the flybar control set.

I posted another piece in this forum about using the plastic TRex pieces for the Falcon so if you are interested in the plastic pieces do a search.

The TRex pieces I used fit the Falcon without any modifications. I did not have to create any new control linkage pieces and used my original control rods I had already made when I got rid of the Z-Bend linkage pieces. Everything appears to be much tighter and in my mind I think it is more stable but that could be only because I want it to be that way.

It is really a pretty straight forward mod and I think most people with a little bit of mechanical sense should have no problem. No special tools are required and there are no trick secrets. I will try and answer any questions you might have.

Some of the pieces I had laying around and thus were not new purchases. But I still included the cost as I wanted the dollars number to be realistic.

Carl

Xargxar,

Did Carl and Steve square you away with finding the replacement Falcon Fin holders? Been there and as far as I know their are no stock holders available from ART-Tech or HL as a separate part. Same goes for the frame extension that supports the battery as well as the motor mount spacer.

As metioned by Steve and Carl, the Shogun V1 boom is the same (not length) but OD; 9mm.

I was planning to use the suggested link from Steve i.e. GrandRC part linked below for my Co-Pilot mounting............... but there Out of Stock

If I find something - I'll post and/or PM you

xargxar,

Welcome back!! Haven't heard from you for quite a while. Will be thinking of you when we arrive in Marbella tomorrow for some holiday.

Anyway, I know I have seen the plastic part you are looking for, and I think it was for the Shogun. Here is an aluminum part that I think will work, you might contact them for the dimensions. This is the best I can do for now, but if I can think of where I saw it I will let you know. Maybe try some thread searches here and over at the RCGroups Falcon thread.

http://grandrc.com/inc/sdetail/20976

Hope this helps.

Steve

Can you shoot a picture of the bubble type centering tool?.
One good thing about the flat bottom blades is that you can tape a small piece of balsa wood to the bottom and use a small bubble level.
