Skyup,

Thanks for the advice.

That sounds like what I wanted to hear. Another archive file. I'll be doing that tomorrow.

I still have a CX with a bad motor and a CP with a broken tail boom and a busted rotor head. Whew, lots of work ahead. Lucky, I like to fix things.

Again thanks a lot,

Dave / Choppersrule

Ya, I like fixing things too!
Best of luck on the repairs and may many happy flights be in your future.
Me, I'll settle for hovering in one place for a whole battery without any repairs ... for now ... hehe

To answer your question about the Falcon motor getting hot, it's very simple. The helicopter is designed to be flown in 3D mode, when your just hovering and learning to hover the motor won't be running at a high enough RPM to reach it's peak performance. The motor is designed to run at least 80% to 100% power. When you run the motor slower, as in normal mode just hovering the motor will develop more heat. I wouldn't recommend hovering for long periods in normal mode because of this. Once you learn to fly and can go to the 3D position, i.e., 100% power on low stick and high throttle stick the motor will run very cool as well as the speed controller and battery. If you are not experienced yet do not try to use the 3D switch since it will cause the helicopter to be very pitch sensitive and if you lower your throttle fast the helicopter will rapidly descend and probably crash. I hope this all makes sense, if not I suggest you read more on here and other sites about how idle up works. When I was doing testing on my Falcon in the beginning I was using normal mode and the motor, battery and speed controller would get really hot after 5 minutes of just hovering. Once I had it trimmed and started flying in 3D mode, i.e., idle up mode I could fly for long periods and the motor, speed controller and battery would all remain very cool. P.S. One last note, be sure that the channel 5 switch is towards you, this puts the helicopter in heading hold mode. If you have the switch pushed away from you it's in rate mode and the tail will drift.

I'm kind of new to the boards here but I wanted to take a minute to say thanks for all the very helpful info you've dispensed on the Falcon... I'm a quasi-experienced Blade CP pilot who ordered my Falcon this Sat; and the manual conversion you did (which I've already read) along with the other info sure helped when I first looked into buying what is a new and somewhat unknown-model heli..
thx again & I'll watch for your other stuff!

Thanks Poiyt, I think you'll really like the Falcon, hopefully everyone will contribute to the thread and we can all learn more about this great flying little helicopter!

Gary,

The heat problem that I was experienceing and your explanation makes all the sense in the world to me. I just thought that I may have had a problem. I like to be on the safe side.

I do fly at times in idle up mode with the CP, so I'm familiar with normal mode and idle-up mode.

The toggle switch for rate or head holding gyro, I'm also aware of. Thanks to your updated manual...Sooo much better.

Currently, I have 20 battery packs on the Falcon, with only one mishap, broken blade, pilot error. Hit the leg on my work bench.

I'm having ton of fun with the Falcon, I just don't get the time I'd like to fly (family responsibilities).

And again, thanks so much for all your inputs and concerns with the Falcon,

Dave / Choppersrule

Defective Falcon 3d ... Hobby Lobby ... Gary & SkyUp

Sent my Falcon with the bad motor back to Hobby Lobby on Friday....on Monday I got an email that my new Falcon
was on the shipping list (but backordered).

That's good customer service from Hobby Lobby. I don't mind the backorder, that's business, but the quick
turnaround from Hobby Lobby and email letting me know the status keeps me buying from them instead of trying
to save a few bucks on Ebay.

Gary & SkyUp .... just wanted to sent a note of appreciation to you guys. Gary, the manual is very helpful and a
constant reference for me. SkyUp, the maintenance and tuneup tips are like mana from heaven to a newbie like
me.

It's people like you that make this such a rewarding (and addictive) hobby. Thanks !

Barry

Barry & Dave,

Barry I'm glad we can help, after all half the fun is tinkering and learning about these amazing flying contraptions! Dave glad your having fun with your Falcon that's what this hobby is all about. Something I just learned from Skyup is that on the newest Falcon's apparently the channel 5 switch isn't even connected! I'm guessing they did this at the factory and probably because someone switched to non-heading hold mode and probably crashed their helicopter. Mine is connected but it could be that the rest of them aren't. It's probably no big deal since I never fly in anything but heading hold mode. After all it's alot easier on your pilot load not to worry about where the tail is going. I'm sure as we post here and on other forums the word will get back to the factory and they will make changes and improvements. I've heard that there will be some upgrades possibly available in the future for the Falcon but I can't say when because I just don't know. The only improvement I'd even think about is getting a smoother throttle stick, even with my ratchet turned over and only light pressure on the throttle it's still much stiffer than my good Eclipse 7 transmitter. Everything else is fine but it would be nice too if they had a throttle hold switch, that way you could do and autorotation if you had a problem.

Gary

I have an Eclipse 7 too. If you want a throtle hold switch just use your eclipse. It can be set up to be either positive or negitive shift so you should have no problem "talking" to the included reciever.

Congrats Allen!

Great news indeed, It's a fun heli, I think you'll really enjoy it.
I think you said that you already downloaded the Revised Falcon 3D Manual, but if you haven't, do so. Gary put pre-flight checks in there that can really save you hassles and make your experience a great one. Put on the training gear, even if you're an experienced flyer so that you can get used to it, the gear has saved me quite a few times and does a good job of absorbing a fair amount of shock.
Take 'er easy and enjoy!

a68fan, just wondering when you placed your order (thru H-L?)

Reason is I ordered mine this past Sat & they said they had 2 in stock; then called them yesterday to see when it's ship & they said they were backordered :-(

thanks for any info!

To all:
Glad to hear more folks are getting the Falcon and enjoying there experiences. Share your good and bad with the heli. It's a learning curve for all of us with the Falcon. We can make this a great post.

Allen,
Just hang in there, we know your anxiou to get the Falcon. As Skyup mentioned, put the training gear on for several flights, until you get the feel of it's responses.

Poiyt,
Great talking to you the other day and your interest in the Falcon and all your questions.

I heard that HL will be getting a new shipment 8/25 (my birthday). So in the mean time, don't pull out your hair waiting.. Fly the CX and CP for a few more days.

If anybody has questions, just post them. I know someone will get back to you in a timely fashion.

Best to all,

Dave / Choppersrule

Dave thanks also for your time Sun
When I contacted HL on Monday about my order, they were backlogged minus 17 Falcons (FWIW to others who may want to order)
So, all we can do is wait & read the boards in the meantime!!

Hi Gary...liked your writeup and mine arrived today. I corrected the manual as per the on line help. There is nothing to help on initial setting of the gyro..It will slowly yaw either left or right while in a hover and I must use left stick input to maintain the nose in one direction. The Ch 5 switch is toward the user, and the MODE slide switch on the bottom of the xmitter is in the up position. The gyro pot is at 3 o'cklock. I do not plan on any 3D anytime soon, just want a stable heli. Any suggestions as to settings would be appreciated.

Attila welcome to the Falcon club, I think you will enjoy your new bird after you get it trimmed. First off it sounds like maybe your rudder servo is not setup correctly. Here's how to do it. Plug in your battery and be sure your throttle is set to zero or all the way down. Next make sure the rudder trim is set in the middle of it's travel. Unplug the battery now and be sure to not touch any of your controls. Now look at the servo arm for the rudder, it should be at 90 degrees to the servo body it it's not take the ball link off the servo arm and move the arm so that it's 90 degrees to the servo, be sure not to twist it otherwise when you turn your heli back on it won't be correct. Next loose the screws that hold the two clamps on the boom so that the whole servo can slide back and forth. With the servo arm at 90 degrees you want the tail pitch slider to be at the mid point of travel. You can check this by pulling the two tail rotor blades down so it forms the letter C. Now with the servo arm still at 90 degrees and the helicopter off, slide the servo back wards or for-wards until the two blades are at the same pitch. It will look like a flat C when viewed from the front of the heli looking back. This is zero pitch on your tail rotors. At this point your servo arm is still at 90 degrees, your tail blades are at zero pitch. Now tighten everything back up and plug your battery back in. Check that you have equal travel for left and right rudder, if it binds you have something wrong. You can loosen the servo clamps again and gently slide the whole servo back and forth until you get the same travel in both directions. Now fly your Falcon in a hover and it should hold, if it drifts you can correct minor drifting using the rudder trim. You can also turn the gain on the gyro up a little at a time until the tail starts to wag. If it wags back it off until it's still. This should correct your problem. I hope it all makes sense, it's really hard to describe in writing but it's not really at all difficult to do.

Gary

a68fan thanks.. lucky you, you must have gotten the last one before my order Sat!! As to the CP, I myself have moved from beginner to intermediate; and I can tell you that once you get that first stable hover, it's like "bingo! I can do this!" I've hopped mine up a bit (sym woodies, 11.1V lipo, 10T motor, flybar weights off) and when I'm "in the groove" she'll really zoom!!
have fun!

i've been reading this thread for some time now.....and i would like to ask a comparison review.

few weeks ago i sold off the blade cp after spending gobs of time adjusting it and its still too squirelly and i didnt bother to buy upgrade parts for it.

now im in the market to look for a belt driven heli but i came across this and the honey bee cool , i think the king is a little too light and a bit more to the micro size.

anyway can anyone tell me how would spending the money to buy this rtf kit compared to a bare bone honey bee cool kit and building it from the ground up?

hope to hear all your comments cause i'm a bit hesitant on making the order right now. though im tempted =)

evoIX, don't know what the cost of that would be but in this thread many of the posters rave about their Falcon 3D (which I've also ordered), for $299 RTF + $8 shipping

I'm an intermediate BCP pilot & I find my Blade an absolute blast to fly (she is hopped-up a bit); in fact, for me it's a great heli to practice the more difficult stuff on before trying the same things on a bigger/more expensive ship

cheers!

EvoIX,

It's all a matter of preference, RTF or Bare bones.

I like the RTF, some would like to build it ground up. It all depends on your budget too, and what you want to do..

If one is realitively new to the hobby and buys a kit, then there are other expenses, Transmitter, batteries, chargers, motors, ESC, and sometimes more. Most RTF's come with everything..

It's just something you have to think about and make the decision that's right for your wants and needs. It can be a difficult thing, because there is just so much out there on the market today..

I love my Falcon, it's very well priced, for all the extras included, bushless motor, head holding gyro, direct tail drive to name a few.

Hope this helps,, it can get very confusing,

Dave / Choppersrule
