I just purchased from Dubb an SJ-46 and was wondering if I can utilize a Due-Bro 2 1/4 in. plastic spinner over the billet spinner nut the motor cam with? Also any time I remount a new prop do I have to observe the back plate balancing indicators with the motor at BDC?

Hi, thank you for writing.

I was a bit confused about the backplate balance question, so let me address that first. The SJ-46 does not have a balanced prop drive, and does not require one at the RPM range it is designed to run at. When using the standard spinner nut and prop drive, there is no need to position it in any special orientation when installing a prop. Just install the prop as you would on any engine.

If you own one of Dub's counter-balanced aluminum racing spinners and wish to use it on the sport engine, then yes, you should take great care in aligning the marks with the engine at BDC (instructions for this come with the spinner, and are on the Jettengineering.com web site if you need them). On the QM engines, the counter balanced spinner helps gain a few rpms when installed correctly. But, on any engine, when it is installed incorrectly, the vibration levels will increase quite a bit, and this can damage the bearings, engine and aircraft.

As for the Du-Bro spinner.....
These are fine products. However, at the RPMs the sj-46 commonly runs at (16,000 rpm and up), we generally recommend that plastic spinners should not be used.

I hope this has been helpful!
