Ralph, I wouldn't go with less than a 70 four stoke if you want decent pullout power from a hover, unless you go with the YS 63. It is a little powerhouse. I have a Magnum 70 and a flying pal of mine has the Saito 72 in ours. With both these engines you have to prop them with little pitch and large diameter props to have decent pullout from a hover. I'm gonna try a 14x4 next flight as the 13X8 has great speed but not enough pull out.

You guys flying with the Os FSII 70 getting enough pull out of hover? I am getting a Reactor, looks awesome but can't decide on power plant. The Os is less money than the Saito and I am trying to keep a little money in my pocket.

Thanks

I'm running the FS 70 II, APC 14x4W prop, waiting to try a Zinger Pro 14x4 for kicks, its has good pullout, not a rocket, but good. The money thing was a biggy for me too, I went with the OS for $209, however, the Saito 82, more power, and like 4 oz lighter might prove to be a more versitle powerplant, heck, $45ish more!

FYI - Anyone in the market for a Saito, go here.. HobbyguyRC has the lowest Saito prices I've ever seen, but you have to send them an email and ask for their best deal. They cannot post it on the website due to marketing BS. I got a Saito 1.00 for $250 SHIPPED and I think the .82 goes for $225 shipped. Check them out!

PS - I don't work for them....just a satisfied customer.

Erik

Erik, with your YS 63 (no lighter? than other 4 strokes), how are you getting away with a small battery pack and no further back than the rear wing saddle area with other people having to move the battery way back I wonder?

Thanks,

Ernie

Ernie,

It may be the aluminum spinner and associated mounting hardware. That adds a couple of ounces (I think) over the plastic one. Also, I set the CG at the very front of the range because I'm chicken. I expect that I may have to move the pack further back or (GASP!) add a little lead to the tail. At this point, I just wish I could get the thing in the air.

One thing to keep in mind, guys, is that when the tank is moved to the C.G. the "recommended" balance-point is now "wrong." Not horribly wrong, but nevertheless, wrong. I balanced mine a little in front of the recommended and it flys great (others have flown and verified this). So anybody with the tank on the C.G. should consider this.

Ernie, ever venture up north to Marymoor park? That's where my Reactor is likely flying!

So Erik, have you maidened that thing yet?! :O I guess that I was lucky since the weather has actually been pretty decent here in the Seattle-area for the first part of the year.

Nanu, If you want to save some big money, Hobby People has the Magnum FS 70 on sale for $129. It is about the same weight as the OS 70 but not as light as the Saito. I have the Magnum on mine and I just test flew my friends Reator with the Saito 72. The Magnum flew the plane with as much authority as the Saito. I was very skeptical about this engine until I flew the plane and then I was most supprised at the performance of such a cheap engine. Both engines are inverted and the Magnum seems to be more prone to flood if you really overflow the tank, but if you stop pumping fuel as soon as you see any come out the muffler she will fire right up. One good thing that I noticed about the Magnum is the break in period was shorter the the Saito. I have the Saito 100 and the 82 on other planes and they are fine engines. It just takes a little longer to break them in.

bluehawk, Does the Magnum pull out of a hover? Price sounds excellent versus 250 for the saito.

Robert,

Good point about the new balance point with CG-mounted tank. I'll make sure I'm at the forward end of the recommended range for the first flights. And no, it still hasn't been maidened. We had a few acceptable days so far, but my schedule hasn't allowed me to take advantage of them. I'm hoping it happens soon.

At this point, I just wish I could get the thing in the air.

Push left stick forward all the way, wait 1 second and pull right stick backward, hold for 1 second and then return right stick to neutral.

This should work for you. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Howdy ROBERTC !!

Rob (rcclement) and I both fly at Flaming Gyser Park, which I think, is a state park and very similar to your Marymoor Park in that they are a free site. We do have to have an AMA card and/or insurance to fly at Gyser now though. Rob and I should come up and visit you....
