hi. i basically read this whole thread, , and i see that alot of you guys are using a saito .82, for power, i am wondering if a 2 stroke .61 ringed super tigre would be to much or perfect power for 3D , also what is the best servos for the right price for this plane,

davidt443,

I think I read that an OS 55AX will hover the plane and have a fair pull out. The ST .61 is not one of the most powerful engines out there but IMO it should do pretty good. I am putting a Saito 82 on mine and have not flown the plane yet so I'm sure someone who has flown it with a 2 stroke could probably give you a better idea of just what kind of power your looking at with the ST .61. As far as what servos would be best and at the best price, IMO I like to stay just a little above the recommended servo torque and then from there I'd say it's whatever you can afford. For me, this is just a knock around flyer and not a precision machine for competition so I don't think there is any need to go all out and get the most expensive servos out there. I'm using the Hitec HS-635HB servos.

I got a little more done on my Reactor today and everything seems to be fitting fine. Everything is ironed down, hinges fitted, servos and engine mount installed, and the new CF gear drilled and wheel pants mounted. Just waiting for the Saito .82 to arrive.

kolarshooter,

That is the AW .90-1.20 YAK 54 with an OS 120AX on the business end. I've also had the QQ YAK 54 (73" Purple & Yellow) that is the same size and the AW YAK 54 IMO is by far the better ARF.

I got my Saito 82 mounted and test fit the exhaust adapter and the muffler and it looks pretty good. I also added one washer in the front between the engine lug and the mount for a little more down thrust as it looked like it had very little if any at all. I'm waiting for my new Airtronics RDS8000 2.4GHz radio to come in so I can get all the servos hooked up.

Zippi, Your Reactor is looking great! I bet your looking forward to flying it. I ended up putting .030 thousandths shim between the engine mount and firewall of mine to give it some downthrust. It needed it to help it to fly well inverted. Good luck with you maiden.

RClement, I'm just about to purchase a Reactor and have followed this thread from the very beginning. Can you give me a little help please?? 1, what size battery are you using and where is it placed? 2, do you think a Saito 72 would be enough (I currently have this motor) or should I spring for the 82 before I even bother to try out the 72??
Thank you very much in advance,
Thumbsticks

PS, are you the flying instructor at Flaming Geyser, if so, I'm the guy you just helped out with the 4*40....small, small world!!

Oh, you must be Ray. Yeah, I'm one of the instructors there, small world indeed.
I haven't used a Saito 72 in quite a while. I think it will fly it but I like to hover and the 82 has noticably more power. I guess it just depends on your power needs for it.
I don't recall which battery I had used on it but I cut out a small slot in the very back of the fuse (about 3 or 4" forward of the rudder) and put the battery in there. I know it sounds weird but that's where I was able to get it to balance best for my liking. I had it flying great like that and I could roll it inverted and it didn't dive a bit. You could try the battery up forward and see how you like it and change it later if needed. One thing I would suggest though is to get a can of Top Flite fuel proof clear spray and put a coating on the plane before you ever run the engine. The coating on mine started coming off in no time and I applied the spray to another plane that is prone to have peeling covering and it helped out alot. You're gunna love the Reactor. Once it's set up good it flies like it's on rails. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different things with it but once I had it done it was an awesome flyer.
Another good one is the Fliton Inspire 60. It flies equally well, has crappy landing too, and needs the Top Flite clear coating on it too but it is a great 3D'er and flies very smooth too. The landing gear on the Inspire tends to spit right away, even with greaser landings so I took it off and replaced it with none other than the Reactor gear legs and they work perfect on it. I only had to modify them a little bit but they work very well on it. ( I painted them white to match ) You'll see me fly it down there soon now that spring is coming. Hope that helps. Here's a couple of pics of the Reactor I had. First one is with the stock gear legs, second is with some U Can Do 46 legs that I adapted for the bottom. The Do legs worked the best.

rclement,

I thought I had read here that someone else had added a little more down thrust. I used thin CA on the covering around the firewall and I used clear nail polish on a lot of the covering where it comes to a point. I'm waiting for my new Airtronics RDS8000 2.4 GHz to come in from tower and I'll probably have it in the air in a couple weeks.

A S-72 is a very powerful motor for its size/weight. However, you might (you will likely demand) want more power than a S-72 /S-82 can provide in tis airframe. I used a S-91 and would not trade it for anything smaller in this plane.

The wing loading is really low, even with a heavier motor (like a S-91 or S-100) and you will really enjoy the foamy-feel of a 4-stroke in a light wing-load airframe like this.

You'll enjoy flying this plane with any powerplant, but you will LOVE flying this plane when it is overpowered by a .91 or bigger 4S motor.

I really love mine and I am sure you will enjoy flying yours regardless of which motor you choose, but you will certainly enjoy it when it is overpowered whether or not you are a "seasoned" pilot or a newby. Overpowered, it flys like a computer simulator! You are welcomed to fly mine if you doubt me.

Best wishes and BE SAFE!

Rob.

rclement,

The "Top Flite fuel proof clear spray" you meantioned. Are you talking about clear Lustercoat? I have a can of that.

I had the new airtronics 2.4 in my hands today, A friend bought one in Toledo. You won't be
dissapointed. Only problem we saw was the sticks were set way to light from the factory.
