Have you started tuning the engine?
I am curious how it works out for you...

I think that you don't want to cut too much off the header; you are shooting for smooth power..... Not peakiness..

My header was tuned for maximum power. (lots of pipe cut off the header)
I tried adding some pipe back on it but it didn't really help with the transition.

Tried 3-dif pipes.......
1. .46 size un-muffled
2.50-.65 size un-muffled
3. .65 size muffled

I found that the larger un-muffled pipe and muffled pipe gave the smoothest transition....
The muffled gave the smoothest... and really didn't effect the top RPM at all....

I am sure that the more back pressure you have in a muffler the less peakiness the power band becomes, in 2-strokes anyway....

Still working on getting the engine to run rightdiscovered my test stand fuel tank stopper was leaking, so I will be using the new tank from my Reactor shortly to do some more tuning before installation. I have a standard length Mac's header and a Mac's muffled tuned pipe from the last plane I was using it in, an old Dago Red P51 arf from way back. At that time, I was getting around 14,500rpm with a 10x6 at my elevation. I'm hoping I can get at least 12,000 with the APC 12.25x3.75hope that's not wishful thinking! I also picked up a Top Flite 13x4 wood this weekend while on vacation, so I will try that also. I'll keep you posted.

Well I finally decided to step up the power on my Reactor. I have been running a OS FL-70 since I got it. It has been a great motor but now I fly well beyond what it is capable of. So On goes the Saito 82. Here's a pic.

the 82 will be a blast in this reactor, theres a guy in my club with one set up like this and he runs a 14 x 6 master airscrew prop, very good combo.

TruBlu02,

I think your really going to like the Saito 82. I'm running an APC 14X4W prop on mine which gives the plane a lot of low end torque.

For you guys running the Saito 82 how did you route the exhaust? I really do not want it sticking out the side of the Cowling. The weird angle that Saito uses for their mufflers is making it hard to get it to come out the bottom.

TruBlu02,

I bought the 90 degree exhaust adaptor from Horizon for my Saito 82 so I could route it out the bottom of the cowl but it would not stay tight so I ran mine out the side of the cowl. Doesn't look bad at all and it stays on.

Zippi,

Right after I posted that I went back and found your older post about how you routed out the bottom. I already have the 90 Deg adapter So I think I am going to try that first and see how it works. Especially since that stupid adapter cost me almost $20!

I hope you have better luck than I had. The thread size on the 90 degree adaptor and the stock exhaust nipple didn't seem to be the same size. After the engine would run for less than a minute everything would come loose.

Well I finally got around to getting the engine ran. I did not use thread lock on all the threads and sure enough it came loose at all the spots where I had not used it. Took it back apart to use the threadlock. Hopefully the thread lock will hold it together.

I set mine up the way Zippi orginally did for .... two seasons. While I agree the elbow joint does vibrate loose, it usually took several flights before its started coming loose.
Its the same fitting for the 100 of which I snapped one of these 90* joints. Horizon offered to replace it but I had to pay shipping so.....

I tightened it when it was hot but it didn't help a huge amount. I also used Blue thread lock and it still comes loose. So I just added this to my preflight check.
I try to avoid having mufflers stiking out if I can help it.

One thing I did do is I cut the exaust tube a little over half to allow the nut and the 90* to work together as a lock nut. This helps for a time but it still eventually cmes loose.

These are pictures that are almost two years old. I had just busted the graphtec gear and turned the gear around as a temp fix while waiting for the replacement Graphtec gear. They're a very helpfull bunch of guys at Graphtec.

As to flooding a 82 inverted.... I have my tank at CG in the belly. The 82 draws fuel under pressure pretty easy from 8".... infact when I snapped the 90* on my 100 it still sucked fuel without pressure from 12" thru the entire flight. The only thing I noticed was the change in engine note and 10 minutes later when I did the low fly by I say the muffler dangling from the pressure tube completely disconnected.
Not that I recommend this but it gives an idea of how well the Saitos work under this setup.
I found the flooding was remedied with tuning and feeding the fuel line only from below the carb rather than from above and then down to prevent syphoning.

Have any of you tried the 14X5N on this? There's a reason why its still in the APC line up so I'd suggest trying it. Your LHS can through it in the next order.
2cents.

Well I fought with that stupid 90 Deg adapter for a few flights and finally got sick of it. I got the exhaust sticking out the side right now so I can fly it. Has anyone tried the flexible exhaust? It is $35 or so from horizon. Just curious if anyone had any experience with that style.
