hi guys, well im going to buy the plans of the great curare 40
please post any pics you have of the airplane, its really hard to find a decent one on google and on RC photo gallery , either of the 40 or the 60 version

any comments to make? experiences?

You are quite fortunate that your LHS can supply plans for pattern models which are not currently in print in North America. Particularly designs which are 25 years old.

It will take some looking, but if you travel over to the CAD forum, up top is a listing of free plans. From one of the Eastern European, Polish or German sites, you will find a free plan for download of the Curare' plus a few others. The position of the linework on these do not match the dimensions, but beware.

However, with some digging, you wil be able to download and look at the plan within an hour, and get printed out next day.

Yes, at one time MK kitted the Curare in 20, 40 and 60 sizes. They also did this with the Atlas (Mattlas), Aurora, etc.

I built a Joker 25 with the OS 32 & MK 20 size retracts, and a friend built the Curare with a piped Webra 28 and the MK small retracts. Both were fast, great flying models!

Wow!
I remember sitting on the shop floor of an older modeler that was helping me out reading his back issues of MAN.
That must have been 25 years ago now!
In the article the author talked about Hanno flying knife edge from one end of the field to the other, turning and coming back...all in knife edge.
Pretty incredible stuff back then.
They also talked about how they got the cover shot shown in the post.
What a memory!

Just as an interesting side note..... look at the rudder in the first photo! Who says just a touch of rudder is needed! I knew my plans could not be that far off as I use lots of rudder to hold knife edge. Although speed really controls the amount of rudder needed.

He was making low and slow camera passes.
I even seem to remember the guy taking pix was up on a stepladder to try to get more level with the plane.
Maybe somebody with a back issue can help us out here...
But I don't think he was making full bore I speed passes.

Almost 30 years, my how time passes. I always thought this was one of the coolest shoots for a cover.

I imagine it would be very difficult to capture both figures in the same shot and freeze the action if it were a full speed pass... you would probably need a shutter speed beyond the capabilities of 1976-era Nikons (1/2000th).

I am in no way doubting Prettner's flying skills, but we have no way of knowing what attitude the plane was in immediately before and immediately after the shot was snapped. They may have taken a dozen or so shots and selected the one that best represented knife edge in one frame. That's just part of the magic of still photography.

The shutter speed was set high, but I think the speed of the plane was down for the "photo pass". I wish I had taken the photo!! It's really a cool shot.

There's a cool feature on that model that I haven't seen elsewhere. A ply plate was attached to the top of the LE of the flaps and swung up to act as dive brakes when the flaps were deployed.

I got a worn out Minare from a young guy (for free) back in 1985, right before I left the hobby for some 20 years (yes, I'm making a comeback).

I stored it all these years and I'm about to restore it. I'm even thinking of doing a Minare "RE"-build thread. Believe it or not, the plane has a fiberglass fuse which was "MONOKOTE-ed" The plane is in pretty bad shape, with dings and scrapes, and the fuse has a small split at the seam in the nose.

Amazingly, I remember the guy flew the s--t out of it up to the point where he gave it to me, so the plane flew in the "as described" condition. Oh, and he had a Super Tigre G.60 Bluehead in it at the time (I didn't get that one).

Last, but not least, I also got the plans and bulid article from the guy, but I can't find them. Let you guys know when I do.

I’ve had a number of people take pictures of my aircraft in flight and it is not easy. You’ve got to really slow them down or they cannot track them for the photos.
