Well I try and do what I can, the guy is great who owns the shop he has became a good friend to me, and I try to keep him up and advertised,,, let alone he is a friend, it is nice to get ready and fly on a saturday or something and need a part, he is right there within driving distance, so I don't have to call and order parts from online sources which would take time to get in,,, and he carries tons of only RAPTOR parts,,,,

hay why dont you bargain with him..we are told all the time on tv in the uk to bargain with shops as the normal British attitude is to except the price tag at face value but there are loads of programs now suggesting that you can get the price down more then you think on nearly all products and services.
offer him the same price perhaps that you can find on the net...
or meet him in the middle maybe ect...

That is whats wrong with the local hobby shops going away or closing now,, everyone tries to get the prices down that last little bit and meet the internet prices, if the hobby shop doesn't come down that low the consumer just goes home and orders it online,,,, A man that has a local hobby shop can't sell a helicopter kit for the same price(and make aliving) as say someone like www.heliproz.com who orders the kits by the 1000's ,, the local hobby shop can't compete with the online wholesellers,,,

Jez,

I help out at one local shop. I receive invemtory, so I see the actual cost invoices. A 7chp costs $289.99 at Tower, cost a small local shop pays is about $30.00 less. The margins on large items is really low, shops make more on selling parts but you have to sell hundreds of small Dubro packs to make a single workers salary. Yeah, maybe hobby shops in the UK have higher margins to allow dickering.

Ricks my LHS, gawd I wish!

John consider yourself lucky, there's 4 lhs within reasonable distance, they are great stores, the owner of two of them fully supports our club with member discounts and fun fly prizes but if he can't order it from Horizon or Great Planes he doesnt stock it so I'm forced (and i've begged him on this issue) to purchase my Hirobo and Thunder Tiger parts from Ricks and Heliproz.

As for the pricing if you ask they will match Tower because he'd rather make the 30 bucks than have you go buy it online.

I generally pay about 10% more from the LHS than I would online. I accept that cost for the customer service they provide that no online retailer can even think of matching. For instance last week I was having radio issues with a new plane. So I brought it to the LHS and the owner and 2 of his employees spent an hour with me 'til it was resolved trying other parts and different setups. Of course I also usually get instant satisfaction as I get to walk out with the product I just bought. I also appreciate that I can return or exchange an item without a restocking fee or shipping costs and inspect it before purchase.

i spose you have a point in supporting your local model shops,, i dont have a reliable model shop near by. if fact the model shop owner is a miserable old ###(expletiv )so i do most of my model shopping online..plus i doo all my own fitting n trouble shooting ect..but i dont blame you for using and supporting your shops the way you do...

I enjoy shopping locally because I don't have to wait and I can shop & compare parts in person . So I always try to support the LHS if I can. It is true however that it's getting harder for hobby shops to make a buck because alot of places use (for example) hobby lobby as a supplier. Well, the prices that they get the products at are almost the same (and in some cases, lower) on the hobby lobby website, so either they match it and make next to nothing, or lose the sale entirely to hobby lobby. Profit margins are low. Very, very low.

I use my LHS for parts because it's easy and convenient. Sure, it costs a heck of alot more than ordering online, but I can get my bird up within hours instead of weeks.
Wise hobby shops know this, and will carry more model parts than anything else as that's where the profit is to be had. My LHS has recently expanded hugely on Align and X-400 stuff, a good portion of their store is dedicated to the parts support for these models, aswell as the raptor birds. Naturally, they have huge parts support for the nitro RC car guys too. This is the way hobby shops will need to continue if they wish to survive. Or, they can do like some of us are doing, source out some manufacturers in china and abroad and start selling off brand products (Not name brand stuff, but in many cases, excellent qaulity for the money). Profit margins are much higher, and prices are still very low for the public. Win-win aslong as you don't mind trying something new. Might even force some of the big name companies to lower their prices.
