Hello,
Can someone please tell me how to locate the notch on the backplate properly on a Nelson Conter Blance Spinner. It is 1.75" in diameter if that matters. Sure wuld appreciate some help. I woud like to fly the Dago Red I just finished. I used to fly F-1 but we did not have these type spinners

Thanks,
Jorge

The notch on the spinner backplate should line up with the centre of the intake window cutout in the crankshaft. This puts the extra material of the backplate in line with the material cutout of the shaft. Thus the two components are in balance. Sort of.

You can get it pretty close by turning the crankshaft (in the normal direction of rotation, i.e., counterclockwise as viewed from the front) until you feel the first "bump" of compression. At that point the notch should be aligned with the little brass nut that secures the needle valve/spraybar assembly. If the engine is mounted with the cylinder pointing straight out of the starboard side of the fuselage, as most Q40s have it, this will put the notch at about 10:30 o'clock (45 degrees from vertical) when viewed from the front.

When the engine is mounted in the airplane, it may be hard to find the notch because your view is blocked by the nose ring of the fuselage. If so, make a small scratch in the outer edge of the spinner backplate, directly outboard of the notch, and use that scratch as your guide. Don't tell Henry you've modified his design.

Thank you very much for the information. I will start a new post with another question.
