Hello,

I setup my spur gear such that the spur gear moves freely in the reverse direction, but If i hold the clutch bell there is no play in between spur gear and clutch bell. Is this setting ok?

Please help

the mesh should be the same both directions. loosen the engine. put a peice of paper inbetween. push cb to spur and then tighten the engine mounts. dont make it to tight and make it tight enough it wont strip the gears.

yeah. you dont want it to tight. if you cant turn the spur gear over easly with your finger then it is to tight.

I set mine where I have just a little gear lash as well as spins with out bind. Has worked well for me in 3 or 4 gallons and still running the same spur.

Hi,

Is some play between spur gear and clutch bell required or there should be no play?

You want them close enough not to lash, but loose enough that when you spin the spur you get at least 2-3 rotations.

You want a peice of paper to go through the CB and SG mesh making a nice crinkle cut like a fry, but not tear the paper as this would indicate the mesh is too tight.

If you go to the HPI site they have a video on how to set gear mesh. They say there should be a very small amount of play between the bell and the spur to prevent overheating. I tightened the slipper down all the way on a spur gear that I ran 4 + tanks though and stripped that spur in about 2 minutes. I didn't touch the gear mesh. I leave the slipper alittle loose and do the paper thing like on the vid and it works GREAT! BTW that spur I stripped was in perfect shape. I couldn't believe it. I was nervous about stripping my spare due to bad mesh, but I just backed off the slipper and it's fine. I thought I might've had a bent chassis plate but everything checked out. Wheelies galore! I thought it may be better with a super tight slipper but NO. That just stripped it out.
