I just got a Duellist kit and was wandering what size engines would work good. I have two new OS 32Fs. Would they have enough power?

I'd like to know the answer also, though I doubt that a couple of 32's would do it for me. Esp. at A Mile High with the air density of zip.

I did order a Duelist, just to have it on the spare plane shelf. heheh for a rainy day, donchakno. But maybe Twinnman or someone will be by and enlighten us both, least I hope so!

Not to change the thread but am considering a couple of other options in the twin picture.

1. would be to bash the Thunder Stormer by Doug Spreng with it's 64.5"X 12.75 making it 822.38 sq.in. wing area as per normal .60 sized version.
And into 72 by 13.75 going for 990 sq.in! Then to hang a pair of S.T. .90's on the nacelle's.....could even taper the wing and stab a bit to make it pretty.

2. Anybody tried the Big Apple lately? If so what was the result?
A fellow club member did one several years ago, and promptly flew it into the only tree around for miles. As I remember it was lighting quick and that was back------well lets just say a long time ago.

Cheers

I flew mine with a pair of OS 25FSR's and had a great time, you had to fly on the wing, but that is what it is there for. by the way I am at 3295 feet above sea level. I sold the Duellist and the guy flew it with the 25's for years. he sold it and the new owner put 40's in, it lasted till the first engine out, the one 40 spun it to the ground. I think the 32's will be great. Enjoy your Duellist. Bruce

I recommend 40 to 45 sized 2 strokes, or their equivalant 4 stroke.

The extra power is very handy for getting the plane back to base on one engine (assuming certain other critical variables have been addressed too!).

I am running a pair of old O.S. 46sfp on mine.

Cheers,

I'm at 6000' and I use Saito .56's in mine and they do a good job. I think .65's would give you almost unlimited verticals

My Duellist started out with OS .40FPs and it didn't fly well enough on one engine to my liking.

Changed them out to .46SFs and it is better.

The 32's sound a little anemic to me...YMMV

I flew mine with O.S. 46's, one a counter-rotator. I don't know if they make that one anymore. I think .46's were perfect for the Duellist.

.32's will fly it, but you won't be able to do anything but land if an engine goes out.

I'm at 1,100 ft.

Looking good there TCBLightning,

BTW, I was able to climb on one engine using the 46sfp in my Duellist which allowed me to set up for a better landing approach. It was a slow, labored climb, like a marginally powered trainer.

I have a Duelist with the pre FX 40SF's, as I am almost at sea level here on the Gulf coast, the power is more than I expected.

My observation is that if the size and weight of the plane is okay for a single .60 then the two .32's will be fine as you will have a lot more disc area with those two props than the one probable 12-6.

Watch out when you do your first inverted flat spin. I recommend you have some one there to remind you to pull out as mine did one so flat and slow that a few guys wanted to check for grass stains after I landed. I was caught just watching for a few seconds, but woke up in time.

Take care Jim

I had my OS 32Fs on a Twin Star. It was way more than enough power. I forgot to change my radio to the right plane. It was a cool looking crash, to bad it was my plane. Thats why i started this thread. To see if the 32s which are almost brand new would pull the Duellist.

The 32's will work. However, be close in if one quits.

With my .40FPs (weak, entry level .40) it flew fine but when one quit I had to nose it down pretty good to stay safely under control.

When I went to the .46SF, it have a bit more time to think about options before I land it.

I have retracts and the wing is glassed so it came out heavier than stock out of the box. I don't know how much it weighs. One of these days I'll have to weigh it.

I have a second one which I am going to hollow the blocks out a bit more, extend the wing another bay and make it a taildragger so maybe it'll be a bit lighter and more efficient.
