How would this type of wing work on a qhor. I have been thinkning of making this type of wing one piece at 32". BUild the wing but do not glue the spar in. After the glue dets at the trailing edge remove the spar. Place a coat hander type of brace at the wing tip like the original qhor. Cut out the slots in the center and slide the channel through. I figure the qhor would glide better inverted flight would be better but maybe not hovering. I was going to build it this weekend and flight it with a magnum 40 xl with a 11 x 4 prop.

The only problems we've had with trying the longer chord/shorter span wings as a full airfoil...is weight, and roll instability at slower speeds (rocking)....but I personally haven't tried it with the QHOR dimensions...this sounds like a case for giving it a shot...and then come back and give us a flight report ...it's worth a try!

According to the Coroplast website, you would not save much weight going to 2mm.
2mm coroplast weighs 450grams per square meter.
4mm coroplast (colors) weighs 700 g/m2

4mm gives you a LOT more strength for the weight.

Glad to hear it finally flew for you. Great thing about coro is that you actually get a second chance!

It's been difficult to get 2mil stuff around here so other than a dogfighter wing that I got from a friend, I've been using 4mil exclusively. So far the only 'penalty' that I see is that it is a little harder to bend or get a smooth airfoild on a smaller chord.

I will try and make it this weekend and fly it. I will give pics and flight report.

Oh Contraire MonFrair!!

Keep in mid that when building with coro, you are actually dealing with 2 thicknesses of coro, not one. So, in ounces, 4 mil weighs 2.33 oz/ft, 2 mil weighs 1.5 oz/ft. Thats .83 oz/ft /side.
Or, about 1.66 oz per square foot of wing area.
A debonaire wing is roughly 12"x64" , or 5.33 sq. ft. Multiply that by the weight savings of about 1.66 oz/ft thats a weight savings of almost 9 oz. Half a pound is half a pound is half a pound.

Hi,
Built a great flying PBF using 4 mil Coro. Planning on building a QHOR this long weekend. Has anyone used square tubing instead of channel or angle for fuse? I like to use "closed sections" to resist twisting. Built a .60 size RC heli years ago using thin wall alum. square tubing, and it was stiff!
Your wing looks great, Tattoo. Looks a bit like a contest winning high performance sailplane/electric wing an engineer friend designed a few years ago. He claimed that the reflex really made the difference. Thank you for your input.

It just keeps getting better.
I replaced the rail fuselage with a PVC downspout fuselage.
If the square stuff is available here, I can't find it so I used traditional downspout.

I tapered it to save some tail weight. All the torsional stiffness went away then. It does not wag the tail like the v-tail rail version did, but the tail twists a lot when I roll the plane.

It's an amazing wing. It glides like a Gentle Lady. I was tempted to go looking for thermals. When I let it run out of fuel and deadstick, I brought it over the runway and it floated the whole length of the runway.

Later, My elevator servo failed in the full down position. it half-looped and flew fine inverted. I controlled the pitch with throttle, and brought ot around and landed it on its back. Got some grass on the glo-plug, but otherwise not a scratch.

Dumb thumbs and my Goldberg Tiger is now balsa dust.

OK so I built THIS wing and tried to match it to the dimensions of the Tiger, Low wing. 2mm Wing, dual aileron servos, 41" American PVC fuselage, powered by a tired old Mecoa .46. Tail dragger.

First flight report, engine troubles and a leaking fuel tank, but she had two nice flights and seems very stable, slow roll rate, my test pilot (Little Gator) even did a snap roll with it, just about the time I asked him to be gentle with it. Two dead sticks and both nice gentle landings.

Looks like a keeper!

Gator
