There's a new helicopter field with astroturf covered Helipads at the Palomar RC Flyers located in Fallbrook (about 45 minutes south of Riverside on I-15).

The club provides instructors with school helicopters. Helicopter frequencies are limited to channels 55 to 60 and Ham 05 to 09.
You can also fly airplanes at the runway on the other channels.

I'm a member of the Santa Fe Dam Radio Control Modelers Club. The field is located at the junction between the 605 and the 210 freeways in Duarte. No public access to the field -- you need a key to open the gate -- which is nice. You need to attend a meeting to join. You can visit www.sfdrcm.org if you are interested. Must have AMA. We have a few heli pilots and are always happy to help. My advice: Get a sim and practice until you can hover in all orientations, and fly circuits. If you do that, you probably won't even need help flying it the first time (I didn't). Do have the hobby shop or an experienced pilot check out your machine before flying it though.
