I have uploaded a video of the first flight of a Kellett. It's autogyro pilots worst night mare. The Kellett was flown with the 25" long molded fiberglass blades. Each video has two different file sizes to accommodate slower modem speed. I've also uploaded a video of interesting maneuvers flying the converted senior kadet autogyro.

Well, that sure sucks...... A terrible shame to loose such a nice model.

Looked like the whole rotor just flew off. Did you loose the "retaining nut"? I'd call it by the term I understand the helicopter guys do but I suspect the profanity filter may cut it out.... :

Speaking of profanity there wasn't much in that video.... I guess it came after the pause was hit....

Phil,
Still having trouble with my reader so I can not see what happened to the Kellett. If you were using the Arizona Autogyro Kellett wasn't the blades to short?
I think my blades are 35" or so.
Guess I will have to install a new video reader program.

Cause of Crash - 12/30/2002 6:49:29 PM

The crash was due to a failure in the Master Airscrew assembly, which holds the rotor. The shaft coming out of the bearing unit is steel with a little dimple in one side of the shaft. The outer shaft, which is aluminum, slides over the steel shaft with a little setscrew. Apparently the setscrew came loose. The rotor blade assembly continued to spin and floated down at least a minute later without a scratch.

After the last ‘haaaa-shhhh’, the concern was the rotor blades as they were still spinning straight overhead and coming down. Fortunately, they didn’t hit anything and landed in a drainage ditch, floating in the water, several hundred feet away.

Jim, the videos are ‘mpg’ format. If you have a video reader that reads a different format, please let me know what it is, and I will try and create one.

Per the experts, 5-oz/sq ft for rotor loading is recommended. This gyro had about 8 or 9-oz/sq ft. During takeoff, which was very short, Jim was using down elevator for the first flight to insure that it didn’t do a loop as soon as it lifted off, and the rotors had plenty of lift. I suspect with the SG6042 profile, a gyro with up to 10-oz/sq ft will fly OK. Based on Bill Friedlander’s wind tunnel blade testing, the SG6042 lifted 14.7 oz/sq ft @ 20 mph air velocity which is approximately twice the standard Clark Y.

Phil,
Got the Media Player fixed this AM and now have seen the Kellett lose it's rotor. Man that was to bad. I use the same Master Airscrew on all of mind also. Did have the nut come off at Martinsville but it was a pilot error thing. I was very new.
It's great that those new blades work that good. I am using the Kellett blades on my Whistler's Gramma.

Watching that video brings back bad memories. My first flight ended the same way.A of A provided the Masterairscrew unit with a hole completley through the shaft so you could use a 4/40 screw to hold the rotor on.There wasn't enough metal left and it broke on my first flight. The set screw method works I have 44 flights logged with no problem.I made sure the set screw was perfectly centered on the little dimple in the shaft and put locktite on it and tightened it down good using one of those tempered and ground wrenches the Heli guys use made by "DYNAMITE". My rotor blades flew over the trees and landed in the soybeans unharmed. So A of A replaced the parts I needed (many thanks to them)and the blades were perfect so I rebuilt it .

WOW !!!!
That was painful to watch. The Kellett from A of A is one of the finest rc autogyros produced. Its a real shame to see it end up that way.

Really Kewl Video, hey remember if your gonna build em your gonna break em. Don't feel bad, looked as though it flew very well even with such a high rotor loading. SO build another one and don't give up or make the same mistakes twice. This is a FUN hobby remember...we all have made those mistakes of some sorts, just not all of us have Videos to prove it.

Today I was flying my Gyrace and the wing departed the Fuselage. It pulled loose from the wing bolt down plywood.
What a yard dart.
Yes the wing did follow, actually flew fairly well.
Bob Holman still makes sub kits so I called.
