longballlumber -> 2 speed problems (7/7/2006 12:41:01 AM)

Hello all,

I purchased a 2 speed today and installed it. I had the gearbox adjusted pretty good for a few runs up and down the street. Then it started shifting too soon. Well, I brought it in for adjusment (about 1/4 of a turn) now all of a sudden it is stuck in second gear. No matter what I do I can't get it out of second gear.

What do I need to change to get it shifting again?

Also, should I be seeing bubbles coming out of the glow plug area? I haven't tried a new washer yet, but the plug and washer only has about 5-7 runs on it.

Thanks Gang...

MIke

Hey Mike, it sounds like the 2 speed shoes are stuck open, you will have to take the 2 speed apart and reset them...this can happen if the adjustment gets to far out.......pm me if you need any help with getting it apart or back together...

Mindcrime,

I managed to tear apart my 2 speed last night, and I did find out what the problem is.

First thinks first thought. The exploded view of the 2 speed clutch assembly didn’t match the 2 speed clutch that was in my buggy. My 2 speed only had one clutch shoe and one spring, rather than the two that was shown in the exploded view of the instructions. Can you explain this to me and is mine an older revision of parts?

Now on to the problem, the assembly contained the clutch shoe, a very small spring, a small ball bearing inside of the spring, and of course the set screw. Well, when the set screw was adjusted in the approximate location and I was pushing the “spring end” of the clutch shoe to emulate the centrifugal force of the rotation. What’s happening is the end of the clutch rotates into the center of the spring eliminating any pressure on the clutch shoe. This now creates a situation where there is no pressure for the clutch shoe to return to its “resting” location.

I hope my explanation makes sense. I would like to get it fixed so, as I have had a great time running the buggy. However, I have been out of commission for over a couple of weeks now.

Can you help me with this problem? Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any suggestions or if you would like to discuss my findings in further detail.

Best regards,
Mike

Unfortunately, I too had a bad experience with my 2 speed, but perhaps just a bad luck as I made sure that everything was fitted and setup properly before running my new 2 speed.
Both the 35T (with one way bearing) and the 30T internal gears stripped the second time it shifted, only a few seconds on it's first run.
I was running this on the road and upon inspection there were no foreign object in the gearbox, so I'm a bit puzzled on how this happenned, maybe a stuck one way bearing??.
But I seemed to be the only one with this particular problem, which suggests it's not a design problem.

Anyhow, I stick to the sweet single speed for now, as this 2 speed cost a fortune in Oz, and would cost more if I buy on-line from IRC. Just too hard to convince my local LHS who supplied the 2 speed that I did not abuse the gearbox. Oh well.

I was going to buy just the replacement gears but not sure if compatible with mine, as the 2 speed clutch is different to the picture on IRC'd website - as found by Longballlumber, it may not fit the 30T gear housing.

Hi Mindcrime, do you have any advice re: the compatibility of these 2 type of gear/ clutche setups? or are the pictures that's outdated ?

Mindcrime -> RE: 2 speed problems (8/13/2006 5:37:37 PM)

all of the same gears should fit, the design has been changed a bit over the past few months, however all of the same gears should fit.....I believe only the internal protion of the 2 spd, has been changed.

Hi Mindcrime,

I think that I am have more trouble with the 2 speed. I think that the set screw (shift adjustment) is backing out and I can keep it in the right adjusment.

Any thoughts on adjusting this?

you can put a drop of thread lock, or a drop of ca glue on the set screw, that will help keep it in place...
