What is the method used to install the hatch on the Gen II 102" YAk?
The manual says one thing but the included hardware doesn't match up. The dowels inside the holes are not flush with the outer skin and the hole drilled is not centered in the dowel. My thinking was to remove the covering from the larger hole and fill it with a rubber backed metal washer as I do my other planes but since the hole wasn't drilled in the center, that would look terrible.
There are no brass tubes as indicated by the manual and of course no pictures.

Also, are aircraft lock nuts supposed to be used with the landing gear bolts that go into the aluminum angles? I ask this because there were four screws with only two blind nuts included. What size are these screws so that I can find lock nuts for them.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

The new canopy doesn't use the old system of brass tubing and all that. It uses dowels. Now the hole on the dowl doesn't seem to be center, I know that but that's because if it was center it wouldn't make it through the fuse. Look at inside the fuse.
Now as far as blind nuts goes, do yourself a favor get 4-40 from local hardware store and replace cowl and caopy with 4-40 so if you lost one screw down the road, you won't have any problem finding one at local hardware store. The only problem is it's a little hard to find 4-40 screw that is 2" long for the front of the canopy, get those at www.microfasteners.com they have everyhing. They don't have standard screws and blind nuts in China! Once you installed the blind nuts, all you need to do is use screw using 4-40 screws. I like the idea of Neoprene washers that you were refering to. Once you put those washers it won't look bad.

Landing gear uses only 2 blind nuts and 4 lock nuts. There are 6 bolts for landing gear. BTW, those two blind nuts I think already are installed and the 2 blind nuts you are talking about are just extras for you to have.

Here's a copy of the previous emails I sent you.

1. I understand you are working on an updated manual for the 102". Any idea when that might be completed? I think I should have it ready by the end of next week.

2. What type and size of wood is being used for mounting the fuel tank? It looks like 1/4" balsa from the BW picture but I can't tell. Use 1/4" Li-Ply or just ply no balsa because it's soft

3. I normally istall MPI switches on the outside to gain access to the charge ports. With the foam sheeted skin of this model, where and how do you recommend placing the switches for the ignition and (2) for receiver? Same way. Mark the area needs to be cut and cut it with a sharp blade xacto knife. Take enough foam out to fit the switch and a little from the other side to pass the wires. Before you mount the switch apply some epoxy/alcohol over the foam to keep it from falling apart later. For caution also use some foam CA on the screws, I did a little epoxy but that's over kill. You always can take those screws out because the sheet is really thin. Look at attached pics. This is on my 102 and will be in the manual.

4. Are the predrilled holes for the control horns pre-tapped or do I need to do this step? They are not tapped and you don't to tap them either. Just glue the bolt like the old manual says. it works great.

5. I'm using my DA-100 from another plane. Could you send me the DA-100 template you mentioned in your post? email me for template. I can't attach it on RCU!
6. Any recommendation on where to place the fuel dot for this airplane? Same concern as the switches. Fuel dot should be in cowl. There is a rectanguler part under the cowl that sticks out, drill a hole and install your dot there.

I am really looking forward to building and most of all flying this plane.

Rezagh,

Thank you for your help.

Do you happen to know the size of the screws for the landing gear? They look like 10/32 but I tried some lock nuts that I had laying around for 10/32 and they didn't fit. Are they metric?

Thank you,

Doug

They are all metric. I think 4mm. Get 10-32 and change them all to standard.

Reza
