Well today was the DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! UPS finally brought me some more props about 5:30 pm, just enough time to drill and load up to go to the field, so I did just that!
Assembled the Extra, double checked everything and fired up the MVVS 45 sporting a 22 X 8 NX prop, wow these props are nice! Quick tach on the ground and 6500 not bad for a fresh out of the box engine with only 1 tank of fuel running through a very restrictive BCM wraparound.
Taxied out to the runway, pointed into the wind and slowly advanced the throttle, she rolled out nice, very little rudder needed to keep straight (slight crosswind), nice shallow climb. Needed about 4 clicks of down elevator and 1 of rudder for hands off flight! A few circuits to get acclimated with the Extra, very solid point and go bird! Rolls were very crisp and stop when ya want! All controls were very solid and stable with CG at 3 1/2", requiring only a smidge of elevator when inverted! Did a few rolls and loops and everything was about as perfect as one could as for, time to check stall speed, couldnt slow the bird enough to induce stall it seemed. Have I mentioned how solid this bird is??? LoL.
Landing time, setup my approach and flew right past the runway, it wanted to keep flying, second attempt main gear landing turned to touch and go, third time was the charm chopped throttle long way off and she floated in and was still hot but decent landing and all is GOOD!
I LOVE THIS bird!!!! This is my new FAVORITE plane, I am very happy with it and hope to talk the BOSS into letting me get another one! LoL. Great JOB Tom!!!!!! Beats the Edge hands down!!!

Ok, well I am getting real close, here are some updated pictures. I had a heck of a time with all of the ignition wires, but it turned out OK. The engine mounting was straight forward, I did have to flip my carb over for my throttle linkage. I read a lot about this and 90% of the people are saying it is common practice and it should be fine. We will see. Throttle servo is mounted just in front of the tank, and allows just about a perfect straight shot to the throttle. I used threaded 4-40 rod with carbon rod and ball links on both ends so there is no metal to metal contact. Mounted a 2000mah 5-cell nihm on the engine box for the ignition, both regulators and batteries are behind the tank, I haven't checked my CG yet but I hope I am close. I have started to setup the FM radio for my range tests, so the last thing to do is tidy up the wiring in the fuse a bit and install the muffler. SO now I have a couple of questions.

1. DO I have to use that "bracket" that comes with the muffler it is a Slimline Pitts? I really DO NOT want to go messing with case bolts on my new DA.
2. I have yet to get my spinner from Tom, so can I run the engine with no back plate on just a prop? I know this is a dumb question but I had to ask.
3. Can I balance this thing without the wings on? I know on my YAK I can do it my the wing tube just wondering if this one can be done that way also?
4. Do you guys only do range checks with your FM RX or do you fly with it too before installing the PCM?

So I should get the muffler on tonight and hopefully fire up the engine tomorrow, and do a maiden flight. I can't wait......

Thanks.....

Can't answer all of your questions but as to the muffler lenght, mine ended up at 55mm. You might also look at the other Extra build thread starting at about post 158 or so. There is a discussion of tuge lenght and some good pics.

You can run your engine just fine with no spinner back plate. Your ballance is going to be a little differnet but not the engine performance.
I have one DA50 using the bracket and one that is not. No problems yet but who know.
As to range checks, well I do them every time I hit the field. Do I need them -- well I think I have saved at least one plane by using this practice and at my age I need the exercise.

What gear are you using on your Extra? Mine has the stock polished aluminum gear.
Put 2 more flights today! Did I mention this is my NEW favorite airplane?!!! Inverted flat spins are great! Knife edge spins pretty awesome as well. All of these accomplished with only 38° of elevator throw in each direction, not sure I will need to trim the inside corners of the elevators to miss the pull pull wires.
The MVVS 45 is a wonderful combination on this airplane, @ 16 lbs 6 oz's performance is great and will only get better with more time.
I may have to get a parachute to slow this puppy down to land it LoL, big time floater!!!
Believe 55mm is the length I left my down tubes at, I posted in this thread the measurements, just scroll through.
Awesome job TOM!!!!!!

This is the composite gear that Tom sells. Same weight maybe a little less but much stronger than the stock gear I had to paint it but it turned out OK.

Ok, I got it finished up just a few minutes ago and I am hopefully headed to the field to maiden her shortly. All I have to say is DA makes one badass engine! I choked it, 3 flips and bam running like a champ! I am running Lawn Boy Ashless at 32:1 for break-in on a 22x8 Menz prop. I haven't tacked it yet but I know it is real good, idle is sweet, transition is a little sluggish, low end is 1.5 turns out and high end is 1.8 turns out, pretty much factory so it is definitly a little rich. Here are some pics. I got the cowl all finshed up, the graphics applied wires are fixed up....pretty sure I have gone over everything about 10 times now. The radio setup was pretty straight forward, I just did things by eye for now, my buddy just got a Hitec programmer but it is having the firmware updated as soon as that is back I will get some meters on the surfaces and get it real good. AND I NEED A SPINNER.

Later,
Conrad

Before you go fly take the time to tune the engine properly. Don't run it rich, run it right. I'ts much better to run an engine that has a better of even chance of remaining running than to try and make a dead stick landing out in the bush somewhere. There is absolutely no need or requirement[i] to break in a gas engine rich like you would a glow engine. These are not glow engines or glow engine technology.

Thanks for the advice Silversurfer, but I have been dealing with 2 strokes since I was a kid in the motocross world. I only ran those needles like that for about 1/2 a tank and then went ahead and leaned her up a bit. I was also thinking about only running about a gallon of that Lawn boy crap then switching to the Amsoil.

I got the maiden done today, DA runs great I gave about an 1/8 turn on low end and about the same on the high end, idle was 1800-1900 and the high end was 6900. Nice smooth rollout, the gear I have sucks, it is so flexable that during taxi the plane is all mushy looking, and the wheels are towed out. I will be ordering some carbon gear ASAP. Does anyone have the stock gear? Was it any good?

I didn't do any 3D yet but it flew very well only about 2 clicks of up trim and 2 clicks right and she was locked in, CG was right on at 3.5 inches I would want to move it back a little for 3D, but all in all it does everything good, flat spins, inverted flight is virtually hands off, knife edge coupled a little towards the belly my guess is the forward CG is affecting this, stall characteristics were very good it will definitely float. Pretty un eventful I got 3 flights in and called it a day. I took the camera but didn't get any pics.

Late.

I am using the stock polished aluminum gear, it seems at first glance and feel like it is going to be very soft, however after flying it seems very adequate.
Is the gear from the 3 28% Extra's all the same? If a person were interested in CF gear can they order for the other 2 Wild Hare Extra's??

Tom, how different is the the new 28% Extra vs the 33% Extra 260? I remember you telling me that the Extra Special was a 28% version of the 33% Extra 260.
Any chance the 33% will get the upgrades???
