I"m about ready to install the fuel tank in my 300. While looking at the builds of this plane on RCU and other forums all the fuel tanks are being placed in front of the wing tube. However, the assembly manual says mounting the fuel tank on the lower tray beneath the wing tube minimizes changes in balance.

Where should I mount the fuel tank??. I'm guess in front of the wing tube because every one is flying their machines with their tank mounted in front of the wing tube.

Regards,

Chuck

anywhere near the wing tube will work. Just in front of the wing tube has a very small moment arm, so changes in CG as it emptys will be allmost nill.

Not a problem at all to put it in front of the wing tube on top of the canister tunnel... Works great in my application.

That statement in the manual is left over from the earlier design.

At the time I believed that putting thetank right on the CG was necessary. Even though I was unable to detect balance changes I thought that the really top notch pilots could detect a change.

After talking to some TOC level pilots I now know that the change is so minor that nobody can feel it when the tank is close to the tube, it does not need to be centered.

Live and learn.

I'm getting close to getting the 300 completed.

Wx forecast for tomorrow is windy, so I plan on completing the build tomorrow. Here's some pic's of the work in progress.

Some of the previous posts talked about the elevator halves hitting the pull-pull cables limiting down throws to around 36-38°. I was trying waterfalls today and could not get enough to flip it around the wing, it was more of a very small loop. Not sure I want to trim the inside corners of the elevators to gain the extra throw or not.

Another great day of flying!! Had a bit of wind today probably 12 mph nothing major, landings were much shorter and almost wouldnt land LoL. Even at idle it wanted to keep flying, slightly nose high attitude and it was rock solid and floating and floating.
Idle speed, knife edge slips were awesome, just nice and gentle would slip loose altitude and walk forward. Harriers were fun with the bit of wind, it would almost stand still with the nose 45-50° up, barely any forward movement, just awesome!!
I am extremely happy with this combo, the MVVS is running PERFECT and has great pull, dont think it could be any better.

You might check your CG too. If you are too far forward the elevators won't be as effective as you would like. Balancing the plane so that when you're flying a 45 degree upline the nose stays neutral when upright or inverted will produce unbelievable waterfalls and knife edge spins! I couldn't hardly believe how fast the "New" Extra rotates around the CG when I apply full elevator.

Enjoy!

Guy's

Just going back a few steps here, hope you don't mind.

Has anyone found a more suitable 3.5" main wheel that fits inside the wheel spats better than the du-bro's that I have at the moment.

Does anyone have one of these airplanes with 3W power instead of the DA.

Although my model hasn't flown yet (im waiting for my Emcotec DPSI MINI 5) to come from germany. I have been following these build threads with great interest and the more I read the more I want to go fly it.

Had the same problem with the wheels fitting in the wheel pants. About the only way you can get the stock wheel and wheel pant combination to work is to grind about all of the bottom curved part of the wheel pant out to the sides. This will let you use the stock wheels and wheel pants but is weakens the wheel pants to the point where just about any little bump of bruse will crack them. I have a set of Carbon gear with PSP titanium axles and Kavan light weight wheels for my Extra and you can forget about the wheel pants if you want to use these pieces -- the axles and wheels are just to wide. There was some word about Wild Hare putting together some larger wheel pants but I sure haven't seen any.

The sullivan sky-lite is supposed to be narrower than the du-bro but over here they are about £20 or approx $38-40 for a pair. A bit too pricey to try them on the off chance.

Even with the narrower Sky Lite wheel the fit is just to tight. By the time you two wheel collars on the axle you have used up the complete width of the wheel pant. It just needs a bigger wheel pant!
