Hi all,

Well here is the most recent update:

I still have not heard back from Kinko's from my original email, which is a little irritating, but if I really need to know, I can go in and speak to the manager...

Through a friend of a friend, I now have someone who will duplicate my plans for me for .25 cents a sq foot! This is very exciting to me, especially because it includes a courier picking up and delivering the plans to my doorstep! I think this is going to turn out great!

One question though: in his emails, he keeps saying "bond copies" - does anyone know what that means?

Thanks!

I was doing some checking, as I have been building my Ziroli P38 off the copied plans as to preserve the originals and I have just discovered that I have built my horizontal stab a 1/4" too short. I can overcome this by adding a 1/8" ply plate to each end. I should be alright on my center section as the spars set the width and the ribs are jig locked in position. I have built other planes using copied plans and have had no problems, but I also cut my parts from the copied plans. This is the first time I have used someone elses' parts on copied plans.

I have had that problem a couple times Bill. I use a company that does it for engineers and the city and I have found out that a lot of it depends on the equipment and how it is treated and maintained. if it is not synchronized i guess would be the way to put it, once in a while they will get slightly out of skew. My company taught this to me when I mentioned I needed tomething done and their system was down and said i would run over to kinkos and print it out that there was no biggy. This guy is a friend of mine and wouldn't say anything just for my business on a couple sheets of paper, but he told me how things can get distorted if the equipment isnt regularly checked for being out of whack and adjusted and sure enough when I got my copies I found that they were off about 3/16" from my originals that is why I only get my plans done from the same source every time.

Is there anybody who does an accurarate job of copying AND enlarging?

I needed Byron Zero plans enlarged a carefully calculated 518%. The folks at CopyWorks were able to enlarge and copy, but asking for specific %'s caused a lot of scurrying and hunting through manuals!

Kram theres a guy here in the Quad Cities that has a wide format scanner that scans the plans in for me he charges $12 a sheet. as for enlarging he can probably do that also. what I do is pull the tiff files into Corel from the scans and enlarge them that way. the only probl;em I have is i got Corel 11 right now and it doesnt want to export the plans at the new size of the enlargements but am waiting to hear from corel so what he does for me is prints them out and rescans for me the larger size after I rearrange them and bring him back the corel files. seems it works when I save it to corel format dxf or dwg format but is haveing a problem with the picture formats. but if i trace it to cad format and take the vectors they will save to full size its crazy. i can get them scanned and enlarged to the ws you want my only problem is the resaving in a format other than corel.

I would agree with the potential for Kinko’s blueprint copier being skewed. I was cussing Ziroli (sorry Nick) when I was building my P-47, because parts were not lining up correctly. Found out, that the copies I made were off from the original. Obviously this wasn't Nick Ziroli's fault. Lesson: either don't use Kinko’s, or use Kinko’s, and thoroughly check against your originals, or take them to a reputable blueprint copy house, AND don't cuss out the legendary Nick Ziroli!

I found out but forgot to post it. when exporting a corel vector to a tiff file you must first save it at 1 dpi then resave and can set at the dpi you want. seems its a weird bug in the program but it saves nicely once you save it the second time.

I had plans for a 1/4 scale MiG-3 copied by a local blue print place and discovered, during the build, that the plans had distorted by about 1/4 " in length and in height. Managed to fudge it to get it right, but it was a pain, plus they charged me about $50.

My latest project, an SR-9 from Barron plans, is 6 sheets, 2 of them 12 feet long. Copied them at Kinkos in Bellingham, with no distortions that I can find, for $12.00.
