This is another one of my projects I know I do too many things at once Oh well. I received this vintage sledge from ebay...took it apart and started cleaning it. Ive got a question if anyone knows, is there an aluminum idler i can use for the sledge? The drive train is all 32pitch. If there is no aluminum 32pitch for this truck....i guess i could always switch to all 48pitch, but i dont think they make a 48pitch spur for the sledge...thats a bit pricey though

Heres a pic of the idler....

I am planning on making the tranny as STRONG as possible....to handle BL maybe I was looking into the ball diff for the sledge...id have to get a 48 pitch drive gear for that though. Its also hard to find original parts for this truck. I love the white nylon plastic look, it goes well with the gold color plates If anyone knows where i could find some original parts...let me know.

I cant seem to find any vintage sledge shocks, so ive decided to use the stock rustler/stampede shocks. Im gonna go with the eight shocks setup. Yes, i know eight is said to be overkill(performance wise), but im not going to be doing any serious racing or anything. Ive been trying more and more to get some good pics on here, but all i get is an error message.

Ouch, thats harsh, no reponses, sucks eh? I dont know for sure but it looks like a rustler tranny? Do you think rustler gears will fit? Take the ones of yours and try cause that be really easy for you if they did.

Rustler is 48pitch and the spur is completly different. All im looking for is a aluminum idler for it, but i dont even know if they make one.

That's cool that you're building a sledgehammer! My dad has one but it's been beat... HARD. That thing wheelies with a stock motor I'd love to see it BL.
I wish I had some ideas to help you with that aluminum idler situation...
good luck with it KioIII

I know the rustler/pede is 48 pitch Im just saying that if all the gears fit then Itd be very easy to make it all 48 pitch and get all the gears of the metal you want.

Gunnut!!! Man, i miss having you around! Id really love to make my sledge BL, but i cant find an aluminum idler for it....if i could some how convert to all 48pitch than I would. I just need to figure out how to mount a regular spur.... Also, gunnut you said your father has a sledge, so you must be familiar with the gearing? How would I gear it with IMEX g-hawg tires? First im gonna use my Orion Element 19T Spec....than if i can manage to full proof the tranny id like to go BL. So, id just like to know how to gear with those motors....the BL is a ss5800.

I really doubt that they ever made an aluminum idler for the sledge. Myself, I think it would be pleanty tough without one. If you just had to have one, you could look into finding a machine shop that takes small orders like that. You might be looking a $50 or more for that option, though.
My brother has a sledgehammer, too, but he's got the black and blue version of it.

I would gear it a few teeth lower than stock and just watch the temperature to make sure it's not overheating. Are you running an ESC with it? I'm away from home right now so I can't look at the truck... I'll take a good look at it on monday and let you know what I find.

Whats the stock gearing? LoL, it never came with a pinion, so i have no clue what the stock gearing is. Im planning on using theSS5800 system. Thanks for looking for me Gunnut! Also, should i upgrade to RPM oversized bearing carriers? or stick with the original setup, but throw in some ball bearings? Is there an advantage to either one? The original setup is the bearings in the rim.....

well, since I have had no luck finding original parts for this sledge I have decided to use the stock rustler shocks. But, the rear shocks for the rustler were to long for the sledge, so i just took the shafts from the sledge shocks and installed it into the rear rustler shock body. Im waiting on another set of stock rustler shocks to arrive(maybe a week).

This pic is to compare the xx-l shocks to the L shocks with a smaller shaft.

Added some 60w shock oil to the four shocks ive got on hand and mounted them. Also, i installed the front and rear skid plates. Unfortunately while installing the skid plates a small crack appeared on the bottom of the a-arm mounting area.
