Status: offline 		I remember. There was this one (see pic) plus there were at least 2 more smaller versions. one was .049-.15 and also a tiny one for either .010 or .020!

Status: offline 		Started as a construction article in R.C.M.. It was also kitted by House of Balsa. Hobby Shack also kitted a giant scale version called The Real Big Thing. R.C.M. had a monthly contest for readers to show their own versions of the plane.

Status: offline 		I think I still have a partially built one in my cellar. A friend had one when I was learning to fly and if I remember correctly it was tricky to fly.

Status: offline 		I have two of these "The Real Thing" kits - one that I believe is complete, and one that was missing some pieces when originally shipped. (There was some corrospondance between the original purchaser and Hobby Shack to this effect that was left in one of the kits. HS rectified the situation by sending the second kit.)

It is my understanding that RCU policies do not allow buying and selling in the forums, so PM me if you are interested in owning a "The Real Thing". I would not otherwise make a post of this nature here except that this kit is the topic of the thread. Also, I would be happy to answer any questions about this design.

Status: offline 		There was a Real Thing and Real Thing Mock II published in RCM as well as the Hobby Shack kit. They did the kit because the plan sold so well. I built one from the plan but used a different tail shape that Tom@BuzzardBluff cut out. Oh, and he donated the fuselage that he salvaged from someone else's wreck. All I had to do was build the wing and cover it. Flew great on an OS .15FP. Sold it to a hobby shop owner.

Status: offline 		Probably the most awful model airplane ever conceived. Its main attraction was its bizarre ugliness. Made you want to look real hard to find something, anything to make you feel good about it. At least its appearance was matched by its flying capabilities. Maybe it's a collector's item, as it surely isn't a flyer. IMO

Status: offline 		It flies fine, see my post above. I have built and flown one, so my experience is first-hand. The hobby shop owner that bought it just had to have it after seeing it fly. It was built true, balanced properly, and appropriate control throws set. It would fly all the three channel aerobatics you could think to try.

Status: offline 		When I was in Jr. High (middle school), I carried this catalog every day to school.It was my hobby 'dream book'.I read through it cover to cover a hundred times dreaming of all the models I would someday "BUILD".... ..Today, I reference it several times a year, ....to remenice.I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles and only about seven miles from the Burbank store.(Which IS still there).I did build and fly for twenty years one of the "Das Slupen Thing" (72" glider).I still have and hope to someday finish there 29 percent (1/3.5) scale Pitts S-2a...68" wingspan.I've always thought it was a pretty "scale" looking Pitts. Well enough 'bout me..

Status: offline 		My buddy built one, it would not turn one way, and just barely turn the other way, we cured it with a bigger rudder, but it was not a very manuverable plane.

Sounds like something was wrong like the balance point was off. With decent power (.10 to .15), it ought to be a sweet flier.

Plans are still available from Radio Control Modeler Plans Service for $11 US. It is dated 1973, so it would qualify for VR/CS. It would be a good flier with a modern Schneurle .15 R/C engine. Construction is very simple so it could easily scratch built. This may be my next build, due to its simplicity.

At $70 US for this plane is not a bad price, and it carries a sense of humor with the hillbilly in the cockpit holding the machine gun, and alcoholic still engine cover above the shown brushless motor.
