Miki01 -> Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/13/2006 9:00:55 AM)

Hey gang, I'm not 100% sure if this topic fits here, so, if it doesn't, please just have a mod or admin remove it.

My question is regarding nitro fuel and Zippo lighters. Has anyone tried using nitro for fuel in a Zippo lighter?

Sport_Pilot -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/13/2006 8:31:34 PM)

I doubt it would light. Nitro is similer to kerosene in viscosity and volitility. You can pour it into a bowl, and put a match to it and the match would go out without burning it.

Perhaps, but "Ronsonol" lighter fluid makes a wonderful cold-weather starting agent for glow engines.

Ah, but I hear in other forums that some members had been using kerosene in their Zippos with good results. Though I myself don't want to test out that theory, since mine is still brand new and there isn't any in it yet that may hinder it.

RaceCity -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/14/2006 2:53:56 AM)

Have you tried the "Zippo" forum???

Miki01 -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/14/2006 3:52:33 AM)

on the Zippo site? Yeah, you have to be 18 and pay some fee or something to register

Kerosene will not work in a Zippo ( IMCO ) even if you put it directly from a Mig 21 tank. Don't ask me how I know.

Stubshaft -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/16/2006 1:35:57 AM)

I beg to differ. Nitro based fuel WILL light in a Zippo. Ordinary Gas from your auto will light in a Zippo. Most of the "enes", benzene tolulene etc. WILL light in a zippo. I smoked for over 31 years and have been an avid hunter and outdoorsman. When you are in the middle of nowhere, you will find out exactly WHAT WORKS IN A ZIPPO!

Fuelman -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/16/2006 3:51:53 AM)

Stubshaft is right, any of the ....ene's will work to some degree. Stick with napthalene since that is what the Zippo and rossingnol fuels are.
A lot of the other fuel ..ene's have a much harsher stink or evaporate very rapidly.

sknx -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/16/2006 5:11:45 AM)

Stubshaft,

I was speaking about the kerosene. Methanol or ordinary gas will do it with a lot of smoke, quite unhealty and the cigarettes have a funny smell the first couple of puffs. If you can light the zippo with kerosene or diesel you can set my pants on fire :). It's not about the "ene" in the name. Diesel fuel and kerosene have a flash point over 125 F , the vapours will not ignite from a spark, you need an open flame to warm up the mixture or a very sunny day in desert.
Regular gas or methanol ignite easy from -40 F on athmospheric pressure. From my experience, as Fuelman pointed, naphtalene works best on Zippo. I used it for many years.

I just can't believe that anyone is actually worried about this....especially when you can buy a Bic Butane for $0.99 at the gas station.

Spend a dollar and be done with it.

wcmorrison -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (7/16/2006 9:30:01 PM)

I recall the Viet Namese kids selling JP-4 as Zippo fuel, it worked and stunk like fuel. JP-4 has a minus 65 degree F flash point. That stuff will lite off anywhere. It is classed as "wide cut gasoline." It is not used much anymore, being replaced by JP-5 and JP-8, forms of kerosene. More BTUs per pound than JP-4, slightly heavier too.

Cheers,

Chip

do you really want the nitro fumes in your face when you light a cigarette?

zayzay1 -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (8/2/2006 6:05:18 PM)

In ecuador naphtalene is being used in glow fuel to raise octane. They can not get model engines to run right at their altitude without it. Has anyone ever tried this to see if we can get more power.

zayzay1 -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (8/2/2006 6:08:16 PM)

it is off topic and i dont have much information but would like to know if anyone has experience with this

If he is lighting a cigarette the least of his worries are the nitro fumes.

The common K-1 kerosene has a minimum flash point of 100 degrees, nitro has a flash point of 98 degrees. The wick increases evaporation and will light from a spark at a lower temp, however if it does light, I think it would not light easily, and not at all in cold weather.

Nitro produces toxic nitric acid when not completly burned, which would be the case with a lighter. You probably could get away with a few lights without injury, but a heavy smoke would not have to worry about cancer this way.

Methanol has an octane of over 100, 140 I think, napthaliene is about 60, so it would lower not raise the octane. But it would increase the run time and improve cold weather flying.

errrrrrrr ... ever heard of `Zippo Lighter Fluid' ??

Back in the '60's, we used Zippo for starting engines in the winter time here in Ohio. We didn't have electric starters. A little prime with the Zippo can and off the engine would go with no problem. I never flew below 20 degrees though. I was a young adult then and didn't mind the cold. I don't fly in less than 45 degrees anymore and an electric starter tends to eliminate my need for Zippo now.

Methanol has an octane of 120 but poor energy in proportion to gasoline.

Yes, and I know what it is, other than the name brand. Do you?

azzkikkrr -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (11/5/2006 6:07:43 AM)

I don't need to know more about it ....it's lighter fluid. Won't change my life.

asmund -> RE: Nitro Fuel and Zippo? (11/18/2006 8:43:41 PM)

use 30% nitro and at least 24% oil to ensure reliable and powerful lighting, the extra oil will lube and cool the zippo and make sure it doesn`t seize. Happy smoking[sm=bananahead.gif]
