scrap the 153 and go with the gy240 or better. It is about 100.00 from heliut and it is sooooooooooooo much better than the old gyro.

. I wouldn't trust the 240 to last long in a 60 class.

Don't know why you would say that. The 240 and the 401 are basically the same electronic units. The 240 gain can not be adjusted remotely and it can only be AVCS or normal mode, non of this is adjustable from the radio.
the 401 can be switched from AVCS to Normal from the radio and the Gain is adjusted from the radio. Plus the 401 has limit adjustment for travel in the gyro. Other than those features the 240 and 401 is basically the same unit.

I am looking at buying a Futaba FP-G501 gyro? Is that any good..? I thought the one from futaba that is above the 401 is the GY-501. Is this gyro a heading hold gyro?

I am currently using a CSM ICG 540 advanced heading lock piezo gyro for my hirobo lama and it works very well, it uses advanced heading lock mode or you can use the conventional mode also. The price is "salty" but is worth the relief! and confedence....

When and why would someone want to switch in the air from regular gyro to heading hold gyro?

Regular or normal mode will allow the tail to weathervane. It will not stay on the same heading and if the wind is blowing the tail will turn down wind slowly. That helps as you don't have to fly the tail when flying circuits as the tail will automaticly follow. In forward flight the tail will stay behind and you can fly straight.

In heading hold mode you really have to drive the tail around to make it follow the heli in a turn. Also if you don't control it you can come out of a turn flying somewhat sideways and the tail won't automaticly correct. I fly all the time in HH now and now that I'm used to it I don't have a problem. It's just what you have gotten used to I guess.

Some fly 3D in heading hold and switch to normal to fly circuits.
