Status: offline 		John's a really good buddy of mine, I fly with him pretty much every other weekend, more if the weather's nice. He does indeed still make kits, mostly word of mouth. He always knows when there's a thread about him (he's not internet savvy in any way, shape or form) because he gets a sudden rush of orders for people who want to get in before he finally packs it up. Over the years he's gotten allergic to the epoxy so he has to take a little care when making kits not to expose himself too much.

Here are my latest two:



One is a Micro Estrellita with a 5300kv Medusa on two cells, the other has a TD .010 with a custom wing with an RG14 airfoil. Been flying the Estrellita for a few years, the TD powered one will fly maybe next weekend as I need to make a pack and balance it-vacation calls this weekend.

If you talk to John, tell him I said "Hi" and crack a Greek joke at him for me.



ETA: The reason his stuff is so nice is that after he got back from Vietnam (bird-dog and beaver crew chief) he went to work at AMT models. A lot of the plastic models I built as a kid had his handywork in them. I've never seen someone so adept at taking a block of something, an exacto knife and a sanding stick and turn it in to something beautiful. If you think his airplane stuff is nice, you ought to see the Native American bows,arrows, clothing and tools he makes! He's always handing me something he just made with deer tendon and brain-tanned leather..

Status: offline 		Todd, for some reason they don't seem to get all the pictures on the archive. What I did was google some of the airplanes that I liked. Some I found reasonably quick, others not at all. Plus, there seems to be quite a few that weren't in production during that time. Maybe we can hit Devious up to get a list of what John has in the 1/2a range along with his thoughts on the ones he's seen or flown.

LoL, yeah. Hope to fly it today but it's windy as heck, John hasn't gotten home from work yet, and I am hopping on my bike and riding up to my property up north tonight. Oh well..

The "other" is a MicroShark with a sheeted foam wing-they normally have a hollow balsa wing with a few ribs in them. The MicroShark was his original .010 powered airplane that he came up with when Cannon radios came out. When small electrics became feasible, he turned his .020 sized micro shark into an electric, then did the same with the .010 version as seen in the built up wing version above. The electric version has an additional 2" (17 and 19") over the glow version, but that's from when we were running the GWS fan motor instead of the Medusa-it definitely doesn't need the extra area or span. With the Medusa and a modified GWS 3-3 prop, these little snots are in the 80mph range. My Sp400 racers are a little behind them speed wise. John has also been testing an electric MicroShark with a foam wing like mine that I like alot. His original airfoil is a lot like the RG14 on top, but is fatter on bottom-really makes a difference in how they fly. Both sets of cores came from my stash, so I don't know if he's planning on offering that or not.

Off the top of my head:

Micro Estrellita
.010/electric Proud Bird (still testing)
PeeWee Penetrator (.020 sized Micro Shark-I've got one with a VA on it!)
.020 sized Estrellita
.049 Caudron
.049 sized mustang racer (name escapes me, but I have flown it as an electric and it's nice)
Cheap Thrills (P51 reno type for 1/2A to .15)
Fun-X (1/2A to .15 Pattern)
Twin FunX
French Mirage (1/2A-.10)

I've flown just about all of these, but mostly as electrics. They are all good, honest airplanes, but I have my favorites.

Wonder if he's tried working with vinyl ester as an alternative? Still makes decent layups.

Far as I know they are all available but one of the .40 sized kits that he did for someone else. I don't know how long it takes to get a kit, but he seems like he's always putting them together when I go over. It's a sideline for him, if he get an order he fills it, if not that's ok too. I don't know how he's been at it this long(30 years?), I only made and sold glass kits for a few years and won't ever do it again if I can help it.

If I am completely honest, and I am sad to say it, his airplanes fly better as electrics. The game has moved on, and while the glow powered setups are just dandy, they can't compete with LiPoly powered brushless setups.. If you want to power them with glow and enjoy glow, that's cool-but some of the setups just blow the doors off of the glow versions. A good example is the .010 Microshark. On glow it's about a 30mph airplane with no throttle. The electric weighs the same, flies 3 times as long, has a throttle and is 50mph faster!

I've tried to introduce him to a few resins and he wants to stay with what he likes. He uses the same resin that I used for Sp400 racers, HTR212. It's a high temp resin with really good properties for layup and once cured hold up really well to model use. With a post cure (like leaving the fuse in the mold in your car for a day in the summer) it's pretty amazing stuff right out of the gate, otherwise it takes a little while to reach full strength. Generally this is about a week at room temperature. I really like it because it took dye well and it saved the weight of paint on the racers.

I know this is a rather old thread but do you happen to know whether John is still producing kits? I'd really like to buy a Fun-X and maybe the French Mirage you mentioned from him. Maybe also the Twin FunX. I'm thinking they would all be electrified.

My Micro Estralita w/ .010 was clocked at 75mph and we had TurboTodd's lecky hit 102 in a shallow dive.

The full size Penetrator .15 hybrid Irvine 15r or lecky

Now the PeeWee penetrator is in a whole different league
