Earlier this year there were several posts about 1/12 scale AT-6 Racing. I haven't seen much about it lately and was wondering if the interest in this form of racing had waned or just wasn't being discussed? Here in southern Indiana we just finished our third season of AT-6 racing. We use (as most others do) the House of Balsa or the Global AT-6. We allow the use of any plain bearing .25 engine. Most of our racers are running the Norvel Big Mig 25 engine. Check us out at www.sircm.com. Contact me for questions or comments. More than happy to discuss this form of racing.

We run a similar T-6 class in Los Angeles. Along with the T-6 class we run slo-quickee, aircruiser and 40 size trainers. The series consists of 5 races spread between two clubs. You can go to http://www.sgvrcl.org/ to see the rules.

Checked out your site. Very nice! I can't take the credit (or blame) for ours. We've got some young guy that takes care of that stuff. Looks like you've got them covered in T-6 Racing!
We tried getting people interested in slo-quickie but it just didn't catch on. I think the reason for that is that we have a bunch of scale flyer's in our club. Some (but not all) of those guys are racing with us. I think racing a semi-scale plane was more appealing to them. We have a couple of guys in their 70's racing. We have picked up at least one new racer at each race for each of the last five races. We have tailgate parties at every race and encourage everyone to bring their friends and family to the races. At the last race of the year we invite the entire club to come out for an Appreciation Day. For letting us use the field for the races, the racers bring Bean and Chili soup for everyone. We try to make the atmosphere as much about friends as it is about racing.
We started out running Thunder Tiger 25's and the races were very close at times. When the Norvel Big Mig came available I got one and at the first race I entered with it I could lap the fastest TT's twice in ten laps. Now that everyone is running the Novel the races are as close as before, just a lot faster!
Since we don't have a weight restriction, our planes are generally a little over 2 pounds (2#2oz.) The only structural failures I've seen have been wing joints on the ARF planes.

Another small plane but popular event that is happening at our local field>> http://www.sacramento-rc-flyers.org/events/minirenoairracing/index.html They also have an extremely popular World Model Mustang class that uses ARC WM Mustangs and OS FX 35 engines... Very simple and a ton of fun..

I decided this weekend to fly with y'all this year. I fly the slo quickee's in Lexington and am getting a AT-6 and Big Mig so I can come up there with you guys. I have another friend that will be on my team. I think he called a flag the last race, anyway I'm looking forward to this year's races. I understand that the first race will be toward the end of March.... If you get any more info, would you either post it here or email it to me?
Do you race in the mornings or evenings?? Lex changed so that we are going to be racing at 4:30 Sunday evenings, first weekend of the month.

Gastronom, Glad to hear your going to be racing with us! I remember your friend who came over last season and judged a pylon for us. We really appreciate him doing that for us! Our racing schedule is tentative at this time. The first race will probably be in April (8th) and most likely will not be a points race. The plan is to have a day to get planes and race operations ironed out for the upcoming year and for everyone to get know one another. The first of 6 points races will probably be in May. At this time we have no races scheduled for the first weekend of any month so we should not conflict with LMAC. If you want to send me your Email address I will put you on the SITRA news list and you will be notified of news concerning the SITRA races. We usually race in the afternoon but we will probably race in the am during June thru August because of the heat. Be sure to reserve a frequency with us as soon as you can. Thanks, Mike www.sircm.com

Ok, I am a little upset to here about your non-matrix frequency arrangement. Does your pylon team plan on ever using the matrix system? Read through the other pylon threads and you will see that the matrix is used so that the problems of using different channels would be resolved. I can't see changing all of my equipment around because you guys in IN can't get it straight with the rest of the nation. What I am trying to say is that I would love, I say again, LOVE to pylon race with y'all but your team hasn't made it very easy for anyone to step in off of the street and get into your races.
Kinda reminds me of highschool, remember when everything was sucha 'clich'? You gotta be in with this guy before the group will accept you. Well that is kinda what this feels like.
Maybe it is just the fact that I lost my flying field, maybe it is the fact that I sold off my junk for cheap to supply the airplane and engine that I can't use now... Dunno, I wish you guys would get with the nation on this one. The math of matrices isn't that hard at all. I just can't understand the reasoning behind it, to make it simpler, yeah maybe for your group but no-one else can play?

OK enough with my gripe. If y'all change your policies then I guess I'm in, but since your e-mail was no help at all and very reluctant to help with this situation, then probably not... :disappoin

The TupperWare #7 bowl is the allowed cowl for most of the HOB T-6 racing I've seen ... So, I made a mold from a #7 bowl that had been sanded and smoothed out.

Here is a shot of the mold and the cloth cut out for a couple of cowls.

And here are four cowls molded in translucent colors of Signal Green, Blaze Orange, Saturn Yellow, and Rocket Red. I also make them in natural epoxy color, and I'm going to try painting in the mold. I've already treated the mold with FreeKote 700 non-migrating mold release, and I haven't done any painting in the mold over the 700 yet.

Yesterday I found out that I can't paint over the FreeKote 700 with the NELSON paints. I had to wash the mold out. However, even though the mold had been treated with the 700, I waxed it and was then able to paint it.

I also found out how hard it is to paint the inside of a waxed bowl (mold ). Way too much effort as compared to painting a fuse, wing, or tail mold ... So the AT-6 cowls will only be available in tinted/pigmented colors and in natural glass.

Barry,

Do you still race the T-6's?

Wondering about it's popularity?

Yep, we still race them. In fact the Canyon Crosswinds just held their 1st race this last Sunday. It was kind of laid back. They had 11 or 12 entries of which 3 or 4 were 1st time racers. Many thanks to the club. In the last couple of years we have picked up 6 or 7 new racers from the Crosswinds. Along with T6 they race APRA, 428 and 422. They are a real racing success story. We will try and include a race at their field in the 2006 T6 series. All in all we have picked up about 15 new racers in the last couple of years. Some race just T6, Slow Quickee or Trainer while others have advanced to 422. Three or four of them will be going to the Nats in 2006. Racing is doing well in Los Angeles. At the six APRA, 428, 422 races we held at the Basin this year we averaged over 40 entries. Our T6, Slo Quickee and trainer races average about 30 entries.

Barry that’s great! I’ve been wanting to get into a one class warbird design race.
Are you guys using the HobbyPeople AT-6? Is it still readily available?

I’m a little confused as a club near me http://www.amaachinofliers.com/index.htm races the Great Planes .40 sized ARF.
I wonder why they wouldn’t race the .25 sized so the clubs could cross-compete or vis-versa?

Anyway that gives me an option if I decide to join the San Gabriel Valley club.

Thanks for the quick reply, I’m going to have to come out to take a look for myself & check it out.

Ps. I’m in Orange County so it is a bit of a drive for me but there are no clubs really out here so I don’t really have too many options.

Hope to meet you soon.

The T6 can be a House of Balsa or Hobby People ARF. They pretty much have to be built to plan. The engines are K&B 20 or OS 25 bushing. As the K&B is no longer available it is slowly being replaced by the OS LA 25.

We race T6, Slo Quickee, Trainer and Air Cruiser (this may be the last year for Air Cruiser) and are currently looking at some kind of speed 400 electric.

Both the Valley Flyers and San Gabriel clubs put on races. We hope to get the Cross Winds to put on one next year.

I know about the Chino club in fact I picked up a 40-size mustang and Sport Jett with in cowl muffler a while back just in case I decide to race with them.

It’s a long story how these club specific events get started. As you say it’s really to bad there isn’t more commonalty so we could race other clubs and get bigger turnouts. Of course that’s why I promote AMA rulebook events (424, 248 and 422). Anyhow the T6 stuff is going well and looks to be on the upswing.
