I saw that Scheme also and it's what I want to rip my Model tech down to. Do you know who flew it? That'd help in the searching for photos. I've been looking but to no avail, yet.

I am currently working that scheme. I've found some stuff, but not very much. I have the name of the pilot, but I can't remember how to spell it. I'll post it when I get home from work.

Sorry, 106A, but I must disagree with you...
P-47D-22 “PENGIE-III”, HV-M 42-25836, Cpt Bolesław “MIKE” Gładych, 61st FS, 56 FG, 8 AF, BOXTED, July 1944
Pengie III was a Razorback P-47D, in natural metal finish, red cowl and rudder, which sported invasion stripes on the lower surfaces of wings and fuselage ( indicating that the scheme was either photographed or recorded a few weeks after D-Day) and had the codes and serial number in black. The s/n was probably 42-25836. It also carried the name "Rita" in small white letters under the cowl. The Penguin and Pengie III name was similar to Pengie II. The HVM code may have been carried in black, in stenciled format, under the port wing outboard of the invasion stripes.

Again, I have a larger pict that I can send if you would like...
Note: the word "always" is cut off of the caption. [/QUOTE]
After reading those pages of Gladych's record, I'd be proud to fly his markings... Damn what a pilot. Says he's still living in Seattle, WA. Gonna have to see if I could find him after I finish her and send him pics with a letter of admiration (Only fair for flying his colors).

Hi Verald, I hate to disagree with you also! There were two different pilots that had planes coded HV-M, Smith and Gladych. The one Smith flew was a P-47C, Gladych flew a D, I don't think he flew a "M", but not sure. Smith changed his individual identifier from M to S on his D model, 42-28382, "Ole Cock III", as he was a squadron commander and that was one of the "perks", using the 1st letter of your last name as your identifier. There were at least six different P-47's in the 56th that were coded HV-M from '42-'45; Gladych had at least three different P-47's coded "M". Regards, Jon

Yes to both of you.. HOWEVER the pic that Ray posted has the penguin on the cowl and that seems to have been specific to Gladych. Though it's been an interesting day of learning from both you gents.

Hi, I can't make out the nose art or the tail number from the drawing, the tail number in the article verald posted is a D model, which could be a razorback if it's a P-47D-22 or lower. If anyone can read it, let me know and I'll look it up. Thanks, Jon
