Ok, so I have the Smart Fly optical switch. I have an odd problem with it. If I fully deflect the rudder and then let the gimbals on the radio return to the neutral position on their own by taking my thumb of the rudder stick, every now and again the smart fly optical switch will shut off (green light goes off) for about a half second and then switch back on. I have the rudder plugged i to a 9 channel receiver in the third channel. The ignition failsafe is plugged into channel 5. Any thoughts what is going on? I've tried two separate receivers and both exhibit the same problem. I've bypassed the switch and the problem does not crop up. I guess my radio could be at fault by triggering the toggle switch I've assigned to the switch but I kind of doubt that. There is absolutely no glitching of any of the control surfaces.

Thanks!

John

Hi John,
I really do not have clue about this. It almost sounds like you are getting a power glitch. I can send you a new Ignition Cutoff to see if that solves the problem if you can get me your contact info unless you ordered from us then we should have your information if I get your last name. You can e-mail me at RRRitchey@Smart-Fly.com.
Sorry I took so long to get back to you, I was out of town Thursday-Sunday.

Well, after some more testing, I managed to isolate the problem. I unplugged the smart-fly switch and swapped in a servo to see if it glitched when fiddling with the rudder. There wasn't anything noticeable to the eye as far as the servo glitching...however, I felt a tiny pulse in the servo itself and thus figured the problem lie in the receiver or rudder servo (JR 8611). After swapping receivers, I kept feeling the pulse when playing with the rudder. So, I thought maybe the pull pull might have caused interference so I disconnected the servo horn from the rudder servo to remove the tension/load. It still was glitching the servo and smart fly switch. I then replaced the JR 8611 with a Hitec 5955 and all is well...no more glitching?!!!

I am not sure what the 8611 is doing but it seems to be feeding back some voltage into the receiver and glitching channel 5 for whatever reason. I didn't bother testing to see if these miniscule glitches (enough to reboot the smart fly sporadically) were happening to the other channels.

Unfortunately this problem caused my 50CC Yak 54 to crash (deadstick) while hovering 50 feet above the deck a couple weeks ago. It was only after I had it back together last week that I noticed the problem while performing a range check.

Thanks for the offer of sending another switch rrritchey but it seems all is well. I figured I'd post this update to let people know your stuff is still great

Cheers,

John

Hi John,
I am really sorry your Yak went down becasue of this. We do filter the pulses from the receiver and look for 10 off pulses or missing pulses. If the servo was causing power to go below 3.3V momentarily this could reset the Cutoff and cause it to be off until it recognized the channel was commanding it on. I am glad you tracked this down, sorry it was the hard way. Let us know if there is anything more we can help with.

It's pretty doubtfull that the voltage is dropping...I have a 6V regulator into the receiver and a 2400 mah Li-Ion that is perfectly healthy and charged. There's definitely something going on with that 8611 servo so I'll probably send it in to JR to diagnose. The damage on my yak wasn't too bad...it is my own design so I had my laser cutter cut me replacement parts. Took only about 3hrs to fix all the damage so no big deal.

Thanks again,

John
