Another question is about weight of fabric covering material for rudders.

Which covering material should i use that will give me scale appearance and will not add too many Oz's!

Koverall fabic

or

White century 21 fabric.

Soon fuselage and both outer wing sections will be primered with epoxy primer or good quality automotive sand able primer.

Thomas, i can't find Solartex but i did found a source top get Worldtex fabric covering, it claims to be lightest and can be applied on more complex curves then any other plastic film can.

http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=WTX100

So what do you think about Worldtex Vs Solartex, At $25.00 a/roll....hmmmmm!

While i sort out rudders covering issue, i measured and applied 1/4" wide tape strips on leading edge of 3 upper main rudders. These are marking where i will make hinge slots for HD gray Dubro hinges. Each upper rudder will have 4 hinges and both lower ones will have 2 hinges each on them. I also marked area on base of the both outer fins where i will drill holes for control torque rod to be installed, those torque rods will be connect both upper and lower rudders on both out board fins. I suppose it's better to make these hinge slots first and also mount hinges plus do dry fit rudders for perfect alignment before rudders are covered with fabric covering.

Fairings....

Last night all the fairing between wing and all 4 engine pods were glued on and then all were sanded and flushed for smooth curvature for airflow to go over and below the wing nicely.

This took bit of a while but it's all almost done now, just need to sand and blend lower part of these fairings.

Sammi,
Connie looks good... Glad your back working on it. I enjoy reading your progress. Going to have it ready or at least in primmer or paint for the Kitchener Scale rally? I'll be there with the lanc. and a mossie.

World tex is just another brand NAME. I believe it is more like the 21st century pre-painted fabric. Looks good once on but a big pain in the but to get on. Sammi, doesn't mateer what colour you are able to get if it's a freebie. you'll only prime and paint it anyways to match the rest of the plane. if you have tp buy a roll then natural or white would be my choice.

Slotted outboard Rudders...

I just slotted both out board rudders for now, when looking at center rudder, i realized that it i need to add more meat where Robart hinges will go, so i will add more wood in those areas and then will make the similar slots on it.

Same will happen to both lower rudders also. Here are couple of pics....

Hey Dave,

Glad to see you again on here, well lets see as i'm trying to get it done for Chatham Scale Rally, it will be great to have Carl besides me when maiden flight time comes, yes after or before show times.....
As far as covering goes, it looks like i will end up buying white roll of Worldtex from Great hobbies, i don't know if i can get a piece or not at this time, do u have some that i can get in some sort of trade...

http://www.solarfilm.co.uk/
I'm not sure if Worldtex is same covering under different brand name or not, maybe it is as i read on other RC forums...

Hi guys,

Center rudder and both out board lower rudders are slotted for the hinges at scale locations.

I also added wingtips which were not added before so only tip tanks would be mounted on the wings but now, i can have both variants. I am also planning to paint this model in PIA's livery after first two years painted in TCA's livery as CF-TGE.

Also noted that both elevators have 5 slots each for the hinges, so now i will make those and then i will finish strip planking on the bottom of both out board engine pods and will make access hatches just behind firewalls so access could be there to make motor mountings.

Once this is done, then over the weekend i will do all the remaining fiberglass work on the wings and fuselage, this will be to seal in all the filler with light 3/4th Oz cloth n Z-poxy resin....

Constellation took a bath yesterday!!!

Almost after 2 years being inside, yesterday i took the model on the drive way and gave it nice warm light soap and water bath.

Clean it as much as i ccould without hindering the bare wooden areas. Had it outside for 3 hours in which something ironic happened!

My neighbor saw the model being washed and then came up to me and said, isn't this the same model of airplane that used to be restaurant by the airport on Derry road few years ago (CF_TGE), i was surprised and i said yes.

He asked me it's Lockheed's plane isn't it, i said "Yes, It's Super Constellation L1049's model", we then started to talk about all what happened with CF-TGE 5-6 years ago...I couldn't believe that an ordinary person recognized my model as how real aircraft was few years ago...

I also noted from the pictures that both elevators also has slots for it's 5 hinges on each elevator panel, i will be making those tomorrow hopefully.

Here are few pics from wash deck.

Tomorrow Constellation is going to it's maternity ward where it was born 5 years ago!....

Yesterday was a great day, met with Mike at his place after very long time and Connie saw where it was born 4.5 years ago. There is good chance once again to make molds of this bird and sell short kits of it. Lots of people have shown interest in purchasing this very model but this particular one will "never" be for sale....Mike really liked how i have made progress on the model, specially how it is presently. 2nd major step is to do light application of fiberglass on it's fuselage and get it all primed up. I will start looking for a auto body shop who would be able to do this job for me. Sorry didn't get chance to take any pics of the bird at her maternity ward......

Center fin repairs..

If you guys have noticed in earlier pictures that front base and leading edge base were not present on the center fin, they well soon they will be there.

I took 1.5" x 6" x 3/32" strip of balsa sheet, made many slits from one end to another with 1/2" gap in between, then pried them with out breaking them off on slight downward angle, well this gave me gradual down curve angle i needed to fill this gap between H-stab's top surface and base and LE fairing of the fin. When all this work is done, canter fin will be complete and will look good. I also had to add piece of a foam that was cut into shape to make LE fairing. If you notice there is wax paper taped between fin, stab and fuselage, this wax paper is there so glue will not permanently attach the fin to the stab and fuselage, yet i can do this repair to fix this fin.

Repairs and modification to center fin are done now, fin's surface area at top portion of LE was enlarged and corrected in it's position.

Now it's as how it should be for this scale of model. Most of the Spackle work is done now and hopefully soon as i find right auto body painted to spray auto primer on the fuselage, it will then be primed, in between i will start applying light weight of fiberglass to all filled outer surfaces as it get dinged up very easily...

Here are more pics of center fin's modifications...

PIA's Super Connies....

PIA had 5 in total, first 3 were L1049Cs and other 2 were L1049H's, none of PIA's Connies had tip tanks on there wings. I'm going to make my newer tanks removable now, so after 1st two years being in TCA's TGE livery, it will be turned into PIA's ole bird.

Sure, Pm or post on here would be good also.

I will late few pics of the nacelle plug from all sides and it's 2 other sections, this way u can see them and guide me through. I prefer using epoxy resins but it these don't need them as i will do this work in the open garage, so i will use Poly resin.

I will be going to Composites Canada soon to get some cloth for fuselage, i can buy material for these there also. Make me a list of items needed and we'll go from there...

Other than resin and hardener, I would get some modelling clay while you're there. You can use the modelling clay to make your parting planes: nice and easy.
