I've got a few things you could add to the Connie, here is a bird that I was launching from Korat,Thailand.

Hello CptDan,

Nice picture you posted of EC-121, wondering if that particular bird is still in existence today.

Also like to know what you have as add ons for my model.

As a matter of fact some of the 552 birds are still on display, there is a group in my old squadron that is trying to bring one back from somewhere in Wyoming or Montana of all places. Wright-Pat has our most famous bird "triple nickel" tail numbers 555. The photo here is a shot of one of our birds that is at the McClellan AFB air museum here in Sacramento.

Its amazing that there are more surviving military EC-121s around Vs civil S Connies. Recently one of your EC-121D's was restored to airworthy status but it hasn't been given airworthy certification as yet!, Hopefully it will be granted this certificate to join other 3 currently flying Connies in the world. http://www.conniesurvivors.com/N548GF.htm

Ian,

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement. Today i tested 3 blade prop on your provided SK50 engine for testing purposes, i am very happy to say that so far it has passed all my tests put on her!, yesterday i did few tests with 2 blade prop on her and she preformed just great, right from constant idling to mid range to full power!, similar tests were performed today and she didn't even felt as 3 blade was mounted on it!, just can't wait to get the production version engines on her firewalls.

Finally last night i regained motivation back by assembling whole airframe together to see how she looks, it was sweet site and she look really nice. I did noticed couple of incorrect shape and sanding errors on the fins that i haven't noticed before until last night due certain angle of lighting, not big problem i will re sand and correct them.

For long time i wanted to see how my Connie would sit on its gears, as i want to get struts for it and i may very well have to get nose strut custom built as i can't find 9" long strut locally in TO area. To do this i made L/Gs out of 5/16", nose out of 1/4" dowels and axles out of 1/8" dowels, for wheels i am using 2-3/4" for mains and 1-3/4" for nose. This took few hours of the bight warm sunny morning with temp of 24 degrees C!!, Nice warm weather finally.

Currently dummy L/Gs are installed on the model but are drying out, so once model is on its gears i will take few pictures and post for all to see and enjoy.

I have been asked by couple of local guys (Nick the greek) to show how i made these fixed L/Gs for the Connie, since guys want to see the steps i took making them, i have taken few pictures of disassembled gears showing how i did those, basically pictures are self explanatory, i will post them soon too.

Hi, I've been following this build for some time now. It's a very impressive project. It should turn out to be a gem.

Hello Wymbly1971,

Yes its coming along at slower pace now, i highly doubt if i will meet my target date anymore due to recent health problems, with respect to my restrictions i will be slowly building it at lower then usual pace. Thanks for your kind words and complements.

Last night i figured that current height for nose strut is still lower then what it should be, so this will have to be increased buy 1-1/4" more as Connie's had great AOA angle while on the ground. This also mean it will need 10-1/4" long nose strut now...

Opinion's Needed

I have started to cut flight control surfaces on the tailplane, i would like to know if its good to do them out of foamcore or reconstruct them from balsa stocks and sheeting?(Framework skeleton), I want to save some weight there plus add fabric covered rudders and show internal rib details...

It looks as i am on my own as no one responded to my request of opinions and suggestion on rudder and elevator weight delima, any how this is what i came to conclusion: Make both types of rudders foamcore and balsa frame and then compare the weights on them, this way whatever method of construction and final product is lighter i will make all 3 dorsal and both ventral rudders out of that method.

sammy,
I see nothing wrong in using the cut out pieces from the tail feathers for your control surfaces, just cap them with thin sheet balsa and cover.there is a way to simulate a fabric covered surface even though it is sheeted, just add 1/16 thick fake ribs in the scale location then cover with medium weight silkspan.I've been witing for the first flight or run up of the engines.

Some Pics of the Connie flying here in Australia. Thought they might come in handy for scale detail.
