I've got a few things you could add to the Connie, here is a bird that I was launching from Korat,Thailand.

Hello CptDan,

Nice picture you posted of EC-121, wondering if that particular bird is still in existence today.

Also like to know what you have as add ons for my model.

As a matter of fact some of the 552 birds are still on display, there is a group in my old squadron that is trying to bring one back from somewhere in Wyoming or Montana of all places. Wright-Pat has our most famous bird "triple nickel" tail numbers 555. The photo here is a shot of one of our birds that is at the McClellan AFB air museum here in Sacramento.

Its amazing that there are more surviving military EC-121s around Vs civil S Connies. Recently one of your EC-121D's was restored to airworthy status but it hasn't been given airworthy certification as yet!, Hopefully it will be granted this certificate to join other 3 currently flying Connies in the world. http://www.conniesurvivors.com/N548GF.htm

Ian,

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement. Today i tested 3 blade prop on your provided SK50 engine for testing purposes, i am very happy to say that so far it has passed all my tests put on her!, yesterday i did few tests with 2 blade prop on her and she preformed just great, right from constant idling to mid range to full power!, similar tests were performed today and she didn't even felt as 3 blade was mounted on it!, just can't wait to get the production version engines on her firewalls.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (4/27/2007 7:26:54 PM)

Finally last night i regained motivation back by assembling whole airframe together to see how she looks, it was sweet site and she look really nice. I did noticed couple of incorrect shape and sanding errors on the fins that i haven't noticed before until last night due certain angle of lighting, not big problem i will re sand and correct them.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (4/29/2007 8:25:19 PM)

For long time i wanted to see how my Connie would sit on its gears, as i want to get struts for it and i may very well have to get nose strut custom built as i can't find 9" long strut locally in TO area. To do this i made L/Gs out of 5/16", nose out of 1/4" dowels and axles out of 1/8" dowels, for wheels i am using 2-3/4" for mains and 1-3/4" for nose. This took few hours of the bight warm sunny morning with temp of 24 degrees C!!, Nice warm weather finally.

Currently dummy L/Gs are installed on the model but are drying out, so once model is on its gears i will take few pictures and post for all to see and enjoy.

Ok here are the pictures you guys have been waiting for. First two pictures are without outer wing panles as this was the test i did then in second two pictures you can the whole airframe.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/3/2007 8:33:57 AM)

I have been asked by couple of local guys (Nick the greek) to show how i made these fixed L/Gs for the Connie, since guys want to see the steps i took making them, i have taken few pictures of disassembled gears showing how i did those, basically pictures are self explanatory, i will post them soon too.

wymbly1971 -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/3/2007 1:39:29 PM)

Hi, I've been following this build for some time now. It's a very impressive project. It should turn out to be a gem.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/3/2007 3:13:16 PM)

Hello Wymbly1971,

Yes its coming along at slower pace now, i highly doubt if i will meet my target date anymore due to recent health problems, with respect to my restrictions i will be slowly building it at lower then usual pace. Thanks for your kind words and complements.

Last night i figured that current height for nose strut is still lower then what it should be, so this will have to be increased buy 1-1/4" more as Connie's had great AOA angle while on the ground. This also mean it will need 10-1/4" long nose strut now...

Opinion's Needed

I have started to cut flight control surfaces on the tailplane, i would like to know if its good to do them out of foamcore or reconstruct them from balsa stocks and sheeting?(Framework skeleton), I want to save some weight there plus add fabric covered rudders and show internal rib details...

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/9/2007 1:13:49 AM)

Ok Ca'mon guys i need your suggestion/s on this part as i am currently waiting....

It looks as i am on my own as no one responded to my request of opinions and suggestion on rudder and elevator weight delima, any how this is what i came to conclusion: Make both types of rudders foamcore and balsa frame and then compare the weights on them, this way whatever method of construction and final product is lighter i will make all 3 dorsal and both ventral rudders out of that method.

Sky Diver in the family!

Few weeks ago my baby sister decided to do this that i have been thinking to do for last 2-3 years and haven't done it, i guess motto here is "do and don't think about it", well she did it....

I hope you guys watching this thread likes it as i am very proud of her now...

aerowoof -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/14/2007 1:11:31 AM)

sammy,
I see nothing wrong in using the cut out pieces from the tail feathers for your control surfaces,just cap them with thin sheet balsa and cover.there is a way to simulate a fabric covered surface even though it is sheeted,just add 1/16 thick fake ribs in the scale location then cover with medium weight silkspan.I've been witing for the first flight or run up of the engines.

flapper -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/14/2007 1:46:21 AM)

Some Pics of the Connie flying here in Australia. Thought they might come in handy for scale detail.

flysrc -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/15/2007 12:41:07 AM)

Sammy
I would cut the flying surfaces out of the wing. I would also cut an extra 1/2" off from both the wing side and the aileron side.Replace the missing 1/2" with balsa. Ypou know have sub leading and trailing edges installed. Sand the balsa to match the angle of the flying surfaces. This is for hinging. Then sheet the ailerons with balsa and cover. If the flying surfaces are fabric coverd then cap strip the flying surfaces to simulate a built up surface. repeat this for all flying surfaces.

Regards,
Dave....

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/16/2007 6:11:45 AM)

John & Dave,

I liked your suggestions and opinions on how would it be better to do Rudders in foamcore instead of making these out of balsa frame work.
Actually just so you guys know before you suggested your suggestions i had already made center fin rudder out of Balsa keel and stocks, i haven't cut the ribs yet so i guess i'll abandon frame work idea and go with your suggestions.

Flapper,

I highly appreciated your postings of your Aussie Connie pictures, they look great and show how Connies would come nose into land!, WOW i always thought DC-8s came with high nose in slant angle but Connies took the lead!!, just amazing, looks like this was the flight when #2 engine flamed out on her during flight and she landed with #2 prop in weathered position, and from what i have read so far on Connies in general that this was not out of ordinary for Connies to land on 3 engines most of the time...

I just found this photo of once our lady CF-TGE when she was moved from Regal Constellation hotel's parking lot to North end of Toronto International airport in 1998 just before she was turned in Restaurant. Thats the time when i become part of that venture and my love for S Connies really heated up. This is THE cleanest picture i have seen of CF-TGE so far by herself. Hope you guys will enjoy it also.

The McClellan Air Museum's Connie EC121 is available for me to take somw detailed pictures of the landing gear. If you need them let me know.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (5/29/2007 3:40:06 AM)

Hi CptDan,

Sorry for late reply as things were slow on the progress of the model lately, I will definitely let you know about your kind offer.
As for the model i am looking forward to get engines, mounts, fuel tanks for it towards the end of this week. Once i get the engines then one will be shipped to my friend Ottopeter in Germany to custom build scale cowls and mufflers for the model.

Props4ever -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (6/2/2007 8:33:47 AM)

Retracts brand changed

I have decided to change brand of retracts from originally planned German Behotec due to its MM sizes of splines and retract mounting holes. Now i am considering going with with Robart retracts and struts instead. Another thing i found that nose gear's offset angle is 105 degress and not 112 degress. I have asked this question before and i am asking again now also!, Does anyone know where i can find 10.5"straight strut??, i don't want to covert 2 struts of smaller lenghts to make one bigger one if i could find one strut with the length i am looking for.

Moodyman -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (7/9/2007 5:24:02 AM)

I have watched this thread for awhile now and thought I'd show a Model of a WV-2 that my Dad built in the early 1960's. It is a control line model that was built in Hawaii (Midway Island) returned with him to St. Louis after leaving the Navy where it hung in my Grandparents garage untill they moved to the Branson MO area where it hung in that garage untill this weekend. I brought it to home with me to Texas to possibly be converted to an R/C model or just restored to its former glory. My father remembers it being a Kyosho kit and it has just over a 6' wingspan with the tiptanks. He flew in this actual Connie that this one is modeled after as well as many others when he was in the Navy as a radar operator. I will get him to try to find some old pics of the actual plane so I can scan them, then I will post them for your enjoyment. This model means alot to me as it is older than I am and always admired it hanging in my Grandparents garage at a time when I was small enough that I thought perhaps I could get in it an fly it

Check with Lenny at Shindinmachine.com for your struts. I've had him make a few sets of gear for me and the work and prices are hard to beat.

Sorry for slow and delayed reply Tim , i will check in with them.

I would like to know if there is any system available that can operate multiple glow drivers for multi engined model aircrafts?, i am aware of single units but not one unit that could operate 4 engines at the same time with one battery as one unit...

Mike Emilio -> RE: Scratch building 105" W/S Super connie L-1049 G (9/13/2007 3:17:41 PM)

Look at the twin-sync. Sold thru RC Showcase.
Apart from a glow driver, consider some risk management if you should loose an engine.

Well Mike i am aware of twin-sync system but realistically i want to keep my engines running all the time instead of leaning towards losing them and then going with twin-sync route. It would be ideal to use twin-sync if thereare no multi glow drivers out there..
