ok, just ate up a stock spur gear in my 18t with a mamba comp x package (pretty much my fault) but i saw that they have some aluminum ones on ebay for a few bux more, i was wondering if they are really worth it, and they only come it 55-57T so what pinion should i run if i do get it?

thanks a-bunch

I tried the aluminum one and tore it up just as fast as a stock plastic spur. The benefit of plastic is that it will not tear up the pinion as easily as the aluminum will. The plastic gear will last just as long with proper care. I have not tried the delrin gears, so I cannot comment one way or the other on them. The aluminum gears do make more noise!

The key to spur longevity is 2 fold.

1) The mesh needs to be perfect (Not loose, but also not too tight). I found that the single piece of paper was a touch tight (was binding a little), but I am a big guy and I had plenty of finger force smashing the paper, so that could just be me.

2) You need to keep rocks/pebbles out of the gear/lower gear cover.

Also, with the comp x, you want to try to stick with 10/60 gearing.

Many people use a sheet of copy paper to set their mesh (Applies to all scales). You insert the sheet of paper (Can be a small strip of paper) between the spur and pinion gears. Then you slide the motor/engine tight to the gears and tighten the mounting screws. Once tight, remove the paper by rotating the gears. Typically, your mesh would be perfect. With my 18mt, it was a touch too tight (You could feel a slight bind when rollig the truck by hand) using that method, so I backed it off a little. It might be perfect if you fold the paper in half (Twice the thickness) and do it (Holding it really tight against the spur).
