Glad you guys have a sense of humor. I like to poke fun now and then but it seems now days someone is always getting offended. I always attend the Toledo Expo and marvel at the building skills of the modelers and their models but what always amazes me is listening to the boisterous comments and fanaticism that seperates the fun loving modeler from the modeler that is totally consumed with the appearance and technology and completely misses out on the fun they could be having by just being a simpleton like me. To each his own. As for me..I like to build an nice model but the real reward is watching my creations fly and being a good flyer. What a wonderful hobby we have. Be prepared!!! I am going to post my tailwheel door mechanism soon. Massage that brain of yours,Frank!!! FliteMetal... you are absolutely correct about the renewal date. As long as you don't forget it!!! Got ya!!! Speedy,

I really didn't have and problem with the tail retract doors installed as per the instructions that came with the ARF. I did use an idea I saw on another thread to install centering springs on the tail retract unit so the wheel doesn't get cocked and jam in the up position.

Just got wings on for the first time today. It actually vaguely resembles an airplane...and a Mustang at that!

Hi,

I'm building this kit (slowly) and just came to the need for my 93 degree dihedral gauge to mark the wing spars for cutting and couldn't find it in my lumberyard - also couldn't find it in my manual's list of parts except where they call for it to mark the spars (and wing TEs.) Did you all get this gauge (1/8th ply)? It's Sat. and Top Flite is closed so I'll try to contact them Mon. Obviously, I can make one, but is the angle exactly 93 degrees?

BTW, this is my first post so I have no idea if it will even work. I'm trying to use Sierra Precision landing gear and have made a lot of mods to the W4/5 to get the gear to fit over the plan, so we'll see. Also, the tail wheel goes up from behind with a pull-pull set up so that will be a challenge.

Just picked a finish scheme, being "Ferocious Frankie", #44-73149 on the Mustangs, Mustangs site, http://mustangsmustangs.com/p-51/survivors/pages/44-73149.shtml

But, I have no idea yet how to finish the plane. Finish, seal and paint the balsa, fiberglass and paint, fiberglass and Flitemetal and paint... Why do you all seem to fiberglass your planes? I got this book by Harry Higley called "There are No Secrets" that describes sealing, filling, priming and painting the balsa sheeting, but no one seems to be doing that. Is the fiberglass just to stengthen the plane and you can just paint over it?

In case you can't tell, I'm a beginner to the sport (at age 54!). I'm an engineer by training but still feeling way over my head!

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Dave

If you look on page six of the instruction book, the 93 degree template is in with the landing gear doors. It says 93 right on it, you probably just overlooked it.

Thanks, Terrell. Found the dihedral gauge. Onwards and upwards...

No worries, Joe...my next one will be a Dr.1, so that'll make up for this one's missing wing.

hi dave , fibreglassing adds strength . as a matter of fact today i sealed the fuse and hope to be glassing it this week . on this plane i will try flight metal and paint . 325th squadren-checkertail clan i think . i beleive most of those who are glassing are doing so for a superior finish . afterall there is a ton of hours in these babies and i want mine to look the best i can make it . good luck and welcome .

Hey Upton...

Most simply scale the size from one of the many drawings and transfer it to your model. Iron on some covering as a mold release and layup several layers of glass cloth directly on the fuse.

When its dry, pop it off, cut it out, hinge and your done. I will attach a drawing shortly...

Good luck

Goose

Great idea Goose, hadn`t thought to do it that way. The only other problem I have with the tailwheel is when it retracts, unless it is straight it sticks on the side of the opening until the correct rudder input is given the it retracts properly maybe fitting doors would help to cure this situation or I think I need some sort of spring arrangement to hold the wheel assembly straight while it retracts. It seems to be ok when coming down as I have put some slipper plates inside the opening to guide it.

What sort of weights are all these Mustangs coming out at as mine is ready for it`s maiden flight now and fitted with a Zenoah 62 with recoil spring to start it plus a smoke system I reckon it to be around 26 to 27Ilbs all up, I think the engine is upto the job my concern is probably the retracts failing if I get the landing a bit wrong, these are the Robart units and I did put some glasscloth around the wing ribs in the retract area, I suppose time will tell but I am curious as to whether anybody has one at a similar weight and if so how it flew.

Hi Aviator...

That method seems to be the 'standard' from all my research. I haven't done it yet, but its coming. There are a lot of these fine birds being built here and on various other sites... have a look through the Warbirds section when you have time...

Springs also appear to be the solution for binding gear. Some attach the springs to the steering horn to the fuse and others put them at the end of the pull-pull cables and connect them to the servo horn. My Sierra tailwheel unit has a spring steel whisker that centers the unit without springs... there are plenty of ideas.

The scale drawing I mentioned for Upton is here...

Good luck!

Goose
