hey Cambo, if your fuel tank isn't on the C.G. could it be the fuel sloshing to the front of the tank and the pick-up sucking bubbles?

My brand new SK90 broke on the sixth or seventh tank of fuel. I used the recommended break-in procedure and was flying with a 15x6 APC. It went dead in the air and seems to have broken a connecting rod. I contacted Ray with support and he was fast in reply. I shipped the engine off for warrenty repair on 8/6.

I called 8/15 to check on status and was told I would get a return phone call. It is now 8/21 and no call, no engine, and no flying .I was looking forward to the SK90 because my SK50 runs so well.

Hi Playn, what plug and what fuel were you using when you got that?

They should have shipped you a new engine right off the bat. This is the peak of flying season for many folks.

You only get one chance to make a first impression, Ray.

I used Morgan Omega 10% and an OS#8 plug. There were no previous problems or indications that there was a problem. It just stopped in the air and I landed deadstick. When I attempted to re-start the propeller spun freely.

Ray responded to me by email on the same day that I contacted support with my problem. There is another office in another state where the repairs are made. I just called there and spoke with Erica. She was helpful and said that she would personally see that this was resolved ASAP.

The replacement SK90 arrived 8/24. I was out of town and did not get to try it until today. Started the break-in process again this morning and got a few flights in. Reliable right from the start.
They sent a brand new engine as a replacement.

That is what I was thinking. The engine shouldn't care which position it is in as long as it is getting fuel.

Was out last week and the SK was really running like crap. It was progressivley getting worse to the point were i couldn't get it to stay in the air for more than 20 seconds, transition was horible also. I was baffled. It had been jumping all over the place in needle settings the day before and i kept having dead sticks. We spent probabley 20 minutes fittling with the needles and then somebody said, "did you check the glowplug". DAAAA. New os 8 and she was running like a champ again. Beautiful transition and held itself in a hover perfectley. Was having so much fun that i ran out of gas in the air.

Just a quick update:
Nothing but good performance from my SK 50. Haven't put but maybe five full tanks (10 oz) through it in about 1 dozen flights as the airframe/radio it was on had issues. I got tired of chasing them so she's (the plane) in the rafters. Pulled the engine and cleaned it up with Methanol prior to oiling for storage until I get the next bird done. Although I didn't get much flying time on it, the power available using a MAS 12x5 was really evident. Smooth idle and could finger start by spinning the cone backwards against compression.

Earlier I posted about the sticking carb. Tore it apart and spent about 20 minutes just cleaning up all the edges with some emery cloth real gentle like. Folded it over and cleaned out the guide screw channel too. Easy to do, no nerves frayed and 100% success. Rotates free.

Other thing I had was leaking fuel around the HS needle. I looked closer and it wasn't coming past the needle, it appeared to come past the needle housing threads that run into the carb body. Odd, as I had sealed it with RTV the last time I had it apart for dirt removal. (hence why the plane is retired...)

So I'll re-seal the needle housing when she goes back in service. I have a 4.5# 3D practice plane in mind this time, the 50 will be perfect.

Still loving my SK .90 but it bit me good today! The weather was pushing 90 when the sun was shining and very humid. I was using 5% power master castor/synthetic mix. I never use a starter because this engine hand starts every time. Fuel up....open carb full, put thumb over intake and flip the prop three times to prime, close carb and flip 3 more times to get everything ready......on the second flip after closing the throttle, the engine comes alive.............no glow igniter connected. Wow, got me good. Had me bent over holding my fingers for a minute. That never happen to me before on a large engine.......(happened once on a flooded .049). Keep that in mind...............I assume the weather had a lot to do with it.

Whoa! Auto-ignition. I am glad I wear a big glove to choke mine. Of course that's not going to stop the prop whapping the heck out of your fngers.

I always hand start so I am used to the glove. I do just about like you. Open the carb, choke and flip 3 or 4 times, close carb and flip until it sounds wet. Normally this is 6-8 times until I hear a squishy sound. Then I hook up the battery and pop the prop backwards once and it starts. The only time this has failed is when I didn't get it wet enough.

Gloves are good. Padded gloves are better. Love my SK 90.

I've only ever had an engine start without the glow-connector attached and it *was* certainly a surprise.

It was a hot day and the engine was still quite warm from a previous run. I had choked it and gave it a single flick to ensure it was nice and wet for a quick start when it burst into life.

Must have been something to do with the way the wind was blowing, the phase of the moon, the way I was holding my mouth and the particular sign of the zodiac I was born under -- all leaning the same way for an instant.

Never happened since.
