The lawnmower won...

Damage includes:

1 Tail blade grip
Swash plate
Various linkage pieces on the rotor head
Rotor head
Flybar
Blades (surprisingly enough the blade grips were fine!)
Bent main shaft
etc...

Basically everything on the head Assembly is tweaked. I wish I had video footage, I got a little out of control and in true newbie fashion, I cut the throttle and the helicopter dropped and ran into my lawn mower that was sitting on the back patio. The helicopter dropped straight down while the top part of the head with the blade gripped snapped off and flew one direction and the flybar another.

I've had my eye on the CNC head for my DF36. Is the CNC head a worthwhile upgrade? Or should I buy OEM parts to rebuilding my current setup? What do most people run in their helis?

ha, I thought your lawmower had run over your heli... I was like "THAT'S IT???"

I had a similar incedent, heli vs car, car won

parts list: (strap in!)
shaft
blades
linkages
frame
a servo or two
Spektrum Rx/Tx
skids

the CNC head survived as did the tail... oddly... and I can say though a GOOD upgrade... you need to have some plastic parts in the line for "crash fuses" keeping the jolt from wrecking something like the motor... as the shock just travels down the line, usually resulting in bent/broken linkages (a pain) frame breaks... ECT

Just a question on this,

I read that you cut the throttle and the heli dropped out of the sky. What is the autorotation, supposed to do then? I understand this from the DF4 as it has direct drive and if you cut the throttle it stops basically rotating and falls like a brick but it should not happen with the df36 as far as I could gather or is the auto rotation for 3d magic high up in the air?

I have a DF36 but I am not flying it yet as I want to hone my DF4 skills first, before spending money on spares for both the heli's

Regards

Nic

auto rotations are done from high altitude. The pilot adds -pitch which drives the main rotors rather than the motor. At the last minute, you add + pitch to slow down the decent and land smoothly.

It's true, Autorotations allow you to maintain your headspead with low pitch on the blades during an engine failure (or low battery) then add pitch just before landing to slow down your decent.

In my case, since the throttle and pitch are on a curve, when I dropped the throttle I also dropped the pitch to zero. At zero pitch you're not producing any lift at all and gravity takes over.. (Very quickly I might add) and you end up with a DF36 on the shelf with no head while you're waiting for your next paycheck to come in.

I hope that helps a little on the theory side. I think I'm going to buy the whole CNC Head as long as I'm replacing everything.
