I finally maidened my Upstar today with mixed results, no thanks to Hobbico. Using an AXI 282010 with 10/6 folding prop covers "lots of sins"so to speak; got by w/ the warped wing and excessive wash out [ as a result of trying to fix the poorest covering job I've ever encountered on an ARF] I finally removed the covering from one wingtip in hope of correcting the wash out problem. Will probably need to do the same w/ the other tip. Also the CG w/ the AXI[2oz.lighter] and li-po 3s2p 1500 is barely on where recommended; need to move CG to about 2 1/2" back,at least.

Skyhawkz,

Once again thanks for your advice on calling Hobbico direct. After installing a new battery and motor this morning that Tower Hobbies sent me per my call to them last friday my Upstar motor did the same thing. My motor still runs for about 30 seconds and shuts down then starts back up. The new battery and motor came in yesterday. I called Hobbico direct this morning. Their number is 217-398-0007. I talked to Rich and told him about you receiving the 35A E-flite ESC from them and he said he would mail me one!

You're welcome Capt. I'm glad they looked after you.

I haven't received the replacement battery and prop yet, but will post the results when I do.

John

UPSTAR RUDDER & ELEVATOR WIRE PUSHRODS
I don't know if anyone used the 2 wire push rods for their elevator and rudder that came with the kit. I did. The rudder pushrod flexs like crazy. If giving left rudder it takes just a little pressure on the rudder to straighten the rudder because the pushrod is bending inside the fuselage. I am going to go to a solid pushrods for both the elevator and rudder that don't flex before I try to fly the Upstar again.

I recently purchased an Upstar so I could teach my brother to fly. I have been flying rc planes for 20 + years. I have never had such a bad experience with an airplane as this one. I had the same experience as several have described here, such as the motor having a short run time and then restarting. I called Tower and they sent me a new battery and a new esc. Ok so far this is working out...NOT. The new battery didnt help! but repositioning the esc to the front did. I did not notice any heat or warmth from the esc but I did get more run time with the esc forward. I cycled both batteries on an Accucycle Elite and both batteries performed flawlessly. Tower has no idea what the specs are for the esc and I have 2 nearly new ones for sale if anyone is interested, because today I ruined the Upstar. It would not react to the rudder inputs at all...it just slowly winged over in the ground SPLAT. The fuse is plastic but it has little integrity around the canopy...where it usually deforms. I need some input on a different EP glider for my brother. I won't be buying another Upstar. Oh and btw I also have 2 nearly new 1800 MAh NiMh batteries for sale too!
esc- $12
battery $15

PsYcHoTiC. Sorry to hear about the crash, but it may be a blessing in disguise...

I am still waiting for a replacement battery from Hobbico, mine died a premature death and they will replace, but not until the end of the month when they get some in. I am interested in one or both of yours, but depends on shipping costs. Also, how much of your prop survived ?? I need at least one good blade... I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. Would you let me know what the cost would be to ship ? POstal code here is B0K 1N0. Regular post is fine, or whatever is least expensive.

If you like you can e-mail me directly. jporter@trentonworks.ca

skyhawkz,
I received an Electrifly 35 AMP ESC from Hobbico. The motor connectors and battery connector on the esc aren't compatible with the Upstar motor and battery. The ESC battery connector is a male Deans Ultra Plug. The ESC motor connectors are a bullet 3.5mm female. I have ordered a female Tamiya conector and a female Deans Ultra Plug connector so I make up a short jumper to plug my ESC to the battery. Also I ordered bullet 3.5mm male connectors for the motor so I can plug the ESC to the motor.
I wondered if you had to change any connectors so you could use the e-flite esc? I couldn't find a 35a E-flite brushed ESC on the internet to see what kind of motor and battery connectors it had. The parts were shipped last Wednesday so maybe I will receive them today so I can change the motor connectors and make up a battery jumper.

Hi Lynn,

I have to apologize, my other hobby is electronics so I am comfortable changing connectors around to the point that I actually forgot about that. Yes, I changed the motor over to the 3.5 mm bullets and the battery to Deans ultra, to match the new esc, and I should have mentioned that so you could order everything at once.

For anyone else replacing the UpStar ESC with an E-flight unit... please be advised of the connector changes required.

John

After talking to a live person on hobbico's 800 number 2 1/2 weeks ago and sending an e-mail I still have not received a replacement ESC as promised , I have spent my last penny on any product from HOBBICO . All problems discussed in this thread apply to the "upstar" that I purchased

aH i TRIEd using your information to check postal rates through USPS and it say only numeric codes allowed? Oh well. I lost both props on the crash . I did use a different folding prop assy last time though . ANy 8X4 folding prop works.

cal.45acp,
I think you talked to the wrong person at Hobbico. Tower Hobbies support said that Hobbico doesn't have a 1-800 number. Look at my post # 27. I talked to Rich at Phone # 217-398-0007. He sent me a new Great Planes Electrifly 35A esc and now my motor runs correctly. You will have to replace your motor connectors with 3.5 male bullet connectors and you will have to replace your battery connector with a female Deans Ultra Plug or you can do like I did make up a jumper with a tamiya connector on one end to plug into the battery and a female deans ulta plug to plug into the ESC. I didn't change my battery connector because my Battery Charger has a Tamiya connector

Looks like the Upstar Batteries are no good either. The one that came with my plane will only turn my prop 7,000 rpm's now. Earlier it would turn the prop at 12,000 rpm. The original equipment replacement battery that Hobbico sent me tachs out at 12,000. I will see how long it last with the G.P electrifly 35a ESC. I see Tower Hobbies has an Electrifly 9.6 volt volt NIMH battery At 2000mah. I wonder if it is any good? Also it may not fit in the Upstar.

There is so much trouble with the ESC and battery that comes with the UpStar taht I wonder if there is either a quality problem, or if they are seconds. I think the package says "performance matched". Well, they are apparently all well matched to perform poorly.

The 2000 mah may not be any larger, depending on the cells they use... probably would be a good idea to check the dimensions with Tower. I have lost the passion for now and will wait for them to send the replacement battery and prop before spending any more money on the UpStar. Maybe the replacement batteries will be better then the originals.

Thanks for the info...

John
