Evan-RCU,

are you using the included power system it came with or with something different ? Most of what I've read in the forums is that very few of the brushed systems that models come with are inadequite for flight.

The Vista EP is alot like a Gentle Lady, all wood so you can repair it, polyhedral wing, good basic design, light, big wing, cheap, comes with motor, controller, switch and connectors that normal batteries come with.ht, Mine need some extra glue around the firewall but other than that it's holding up to loops rolls and high speeds pretty well. I am using a 3 cell 1200 LiPo right now which has really good power and is light, total ready to fly weight is 2.5 lbs (40 oz) with LiPo's and full size servos and reciever. I have a 3 cell 2200LiPo coming so I can get more lifts to altitude for those days with low thermal activity.

The Vista EP is $10 cheaper than the G.L. ARF glider and the G.L. doesn't have a motor, speedcontrol, or prop. The Vista EP has a 1/4" larger wing and 15 more square inches of area. The Vista EP ready to fly with the power system is 40 oz versus the G.L. at 25 oz as a glider. The non powered glider Vista is rated as 28oz ready to fly but my Vista EP came out a half pound lighter than it was rated on Tower Hobbies site.

If you search the posting on RCU you'll see where I posted a Tower part number that had a price of $84.99 and it has free shipping, a very good deal....

PS, as hard as it is to belive I don't work for Tower, BUT I've been a customer for over 30 years.

Donadler,

The code for the Vista EP is WS6604. This code is one posted by Evan-RCU. So thanks go to him. It saved me $5 on the model, I didn't anything for shipping but I'm not sure if it was because of the code. Good luck on your fuse build for that UpStar wing. Let us know how it goes.

Just a note on the jumper. Mine was switchable from Lipo to NiMH with the jumper. This may be why it was cutting off too early. I ordered a new one from my LHS hopefully they have got it figured out by now.

To all concerned with the various problems with the upstar glider;

I got rid of the electric power parts of the glider. I installed a OS max-.10 glow engine, a 2 ounce fuel tank and a regular receiver battery. I am running the engine at full throttle without a servo to adjust the throttle. I had four successful flights with this configuration on Nov. 9 2006. The plane now flies like a glider should. I was able to remove the 1 ounce tail weight and could climb out of sight if I wanted to. The only problem is with the rudder. In order to turn the rudder push rod has to be attached to the inside hole on the rudder control horn as the rudder requires a lot more travel than the instructions call for. The turns are still slow.
The spins, stalls and uncontrolled flight that was happening with the electric power are now gone. I attribute that to the fact that the glider is too heavy for the wing with the added weight of of the electric power. So if anybody still has an Upstar that hasn't been crashed, get rid of the electric power system and convert to Glow power.

Glad to see that someone is having successful flights with the electric power combo. Wish I could have. I wonder if Hobbico corrected all the problems with the ESC and battery.
I have a lot of left rudder trim as my plane wants to turn right. I guess that is due to the wing tips that are at slightly different angles.

I purchased an Upstar before reading these posts. My ESC had a plug to select NiMh or Lipo . I assembled plane per instructions and took it up for a flight. Time under full power about 10 minutes. Had to trim full left rudder to get it to fly straight. Landed and corrected trim with rudder push rod. Took off again after recharge and flew well for about 10 minutes. I seem to have assemble left wing with slight more up on the outer wing, hard to look and see from the front or rear. I get consistant good flights have to cut back to 1/2 throttle as soon as in the air a couple hundred feet. Seems a little too fast but I guess it will punch into a good wind with little trouble. Didn't seem to be able to thermal much as it is flying with a lot of right rudder.
I have 3 good flights so far. Hope I hope I don't run in to any of the problems listed above.

Update on the Hobbico Upstar.
After seeing one try to fly with the stock setup, I bought the UPSTAR. I installed a Jeti Phasor 15/3 Brushless inrunner, a 35 Amp CC Thunderbird ESC, 9 x 5 folding prop, 2100 - 3 cell Li-po. All I can say is WOW, 1/2 throttle with a light hand launch and you are going vertical and almost out of sight very fast. I was even able to do a loop on the climbing vertical. I am presently experimenting with different batteries. It will float and float and float when you try to land.
Enjoy

HI, guys, as many I bought the Upstar after I found this thread , my brand new glider is in his box ready to assemble, I'm not sure to do that due the problems I read here, I think I will sell or trash the glider,,,,,,,what do you think, assemble the plane with different setup, like the phasor 15/3, 10x6 folding prop and a 2100mah lipo battery i have here? or sell the plane to an rc flyer who want to experiment with it,,,,its the glider really really bad?
thanks

arck,
If it's still in the box, you can probably return it and get your money back. That's what I'd do. This is one of those things that sounded almost too good to be true, and in the end it is. I'm sick of fooling around with mine, but i feel that if i sold it to somebody I'd be doing them an injustice. Besides, I'd probably have to lie to get someone to buy it, and I don't want to do that. The thing is a pure POS and if Hobbico had anything close to a conscience, they'd pull it off the market.

You are right, but I have a little problem, Im far far away from the hobby shop, and the costs to return the plane to tower will be as much as the costs it was, What could I say, I return the plane because some guys in the forum said that the plane is a $%^%&@, they will say, hey first try to fly the plane then call us to return it,, hehe, I think that my only way I have is to try to fly with another setup,,,,or hang it in the wall as a decoration,,,,,,
I will never never buy a plane again before looking in the forum about it,,,,,,I always learn something,,,,,,,and this costs me 120 dollars,,,grrrr

I've owned and flown the Upstar many times, the only crashes were my fault. The plane handles wind better than any sailplane I've tried, Spectra included. Once I had the rudder and elevator tangle when making sharp turns, again I hadn't thought to check this till I locked into a sharp turn and elevators couldn't work and I crashed. It's a good plane and the fuse will take lots of hits without being destroyed.

Werner, Hello ! Don't give up on the Upstar, I use the original motor that comes with the plane, I fixed the wing so it comes apart in 3 sections, I use blue masking tape to run around the seams so I can carry it in a small car. It takes just about any battery , I use a 3000 Mah 7cell NiMh , I can also use a 2S Li-Po. I shift a piece of lead around to get the CG right for different bats. It flys into heavy wind as good as any sailplane I have ever fown and once you find a thermal I've flown till I get tired (over an hour). The folding prop needs to be free to fold when the motor is stopped. It flys better than my Spectra or Fling sailplane. As soon as I get the motor worn out I may try BL ands a different battery setup. Lots of fun flying, my favorite sailplane.
