I actually bought a new cheap 40A ESC and the motor doesn't cut out with the stock battery pack at full throttle anymore.

Maybe the cutoff voltage is lower on the new ESC, but that won't help the battery any.

That is easy enough to check, but it may be that the stock ESC is just no good. I would check the cutoff voltage and if it's good, go fly and enjoy.

Wow i hope didn't make the wrong choice! I just bought the Upstar by Hobbico. From reading the forum it sounds like alot of modifications again. I'm just starting to build this glider hoping I make the right choices. I have a nice COG balencer and will follow the directions and maybe put a E-flite motor (450) in. and maybe a different ESC. I'm mostly cercerned about the battery and the motor causing to much weight already! Any suggestions or more advice would be great. I'm hoping to make minor adjustments!

thanks guys,

Rudys Pilot

well, even flying and having it all work right, I still felt it was underpowered. Maybe I'm just flying too much with my buddy who flies Gas planes and 3D electrics. Anyway, with the cheap ESC's, batteries and brushless motors from bidproducts.com and hobbycity.com, I'm going to install a brushless system with lipos in my UpStar.

I use the KD A22-20L brushless motor from Hobby City in my Vista and love it. It's a 200W motor and I use a 2200mAh 3 cell battery. The motor is small and will pull my Vista up at about a 60deg angle and I reach soaring hight in no time. I didn't like the UpStar because it has a plastic fuse and I would rather have a balsa fuse, but they are almost the same thing. Both are 2M gliders and fly almost the same. I just didn't like the plastic fuse. With an 11X6 folding prop it climbs great and the motor only runs for a few seconds to get up there. It's also about half the weight of the stock system, so the plane flies much better.

sounds like you have some great experience in sailplanes! Wow soon I will experience my first thermal...can't wait! I'm hoping you can give me a few pointers, i bought the Upstar by hobbico, I have done all the research...I hope...but I'm going to upgrade right away, because the battery is way to heavy and that big 540 motor is heavy as well. Some of the guys are complaining about the heavy battery/engine....COG ect.
I'm hoping to go with the 450 brushless by E-flite and the ESC by E-flite. I can use my new Li-po. I was also wondering what other plane could I use my Upstar old equipment for? I hate just to have that just hanging around! I'm sure there's a ARF plane out there somewhere that combatible to my 540 brushless and that big ole battery. i struggle with plane and Engine combo! + -

thanks for the info,

Rudys Pilot....my Dog is Rudy!

There are planes out there that will fly with the system you have, but they will suffer just like your glider does. That thing is heavy and the more weight you add the worse anything will fly. I didn't like the Up Star because of the plastic fuse, but they are good gliders if you get them light. The more weight you loose the better. If you want something that flies with a speed 600 type motor go ahead and get one, but you won't like it much either because of the weight. I sold all of my stuff and don't bother with brushed motors any more.

That brushles motor should do fine, you need some weight to penetrate the wind, I have one. Get it up high near parking lots or areas that genrate heat. The heat rises and will lift the tip of one wing. Turn into that circle and ride it till it slowly drifts away and come back and find another one. You'll soon learn how to tell when you are in a thermal, you can stay till the range gets too much or it fades out, then find a new one. I have done hours of thermal flying. Have a good time.
