We run our gas and nitro powered boats in a Conservation Area and they're asking for information concerning the impact of our fuels. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Do a google on these search terms:

MSDS methanol
MSDS castor oil
MSDS nitromethane

If you're using synthetic oil, I wouldn't mention that :-)

Thanks for that but I was looking for something more about the emmissions etc. when our fuels are burned...

Methanol and nitromethane will produce CO, CO2 water and some oxides of nitrogen (NOx) (depending on engine operating temperature -- hotter is worse).

Castor oil will likely produce mainly CO and CO2 with some particulates (smoke).

Synthetic oil -- well that's anyone's guess :-)

The most environmentally damaging of the emissions would be the NOx, with the CO and CO2 being also considered harmful because they're "greenhouse gasses".

The reality is that if you use castor oil and not too much nitromethane then the environmental effect of model-engine operation is pretty minimal -- far less than that of a 2-stroke (or even 4-stroke) gasoline engine. Remember that they add methanol to gasoline to *reduce* pollution these days :-)

It's they synthetic oil that's the possible worry -- but since very few of the manufacturers will be totally open about what additives and "friction modifiers" they put in that stuff, it's probably not possible to get an accurate indication of what its combustion byproducts are -- short of burning some and running the results through a gas spectrometer.

Methanol will burn much cleaner than gas. Look up the byproducts on some clean air sites on alcohol tests. The castor will probably be the worst, but even that may be mostly unburned vegetable oil, so it would probably pass muster. They are most likely just looking for something to place in the file.

Unless you run it really really really lean then castor should produce...ummmm....castor because it doesn't start to burn until somewhere around 850F.

Thanks for all the replys. Very good information is available from both the AMA in the US and MAAC in Canada on getting and keeping sites, I also recieved a good letter from Byron Originals on the effects of burning model fuels.
