I'm wanting to build an exciting speed plane for sport flying, with no plans of racing. I was thinking about getting the matney models aj-2 glass fuse foam wing kit and was wondering if I can use standard hitec servos(HS-311) in it. I am planning on using a tower .46 so I dont think the stress load will be that high compared to a q40 with a racing engine. I guess my other question is will a tower .46 engine fit in a q40 airframe.

Even the cheapest standard servo today is far far better than the servos that were in use back in the 60's and 70's, when pylon racing airplanes were first developed and flown. Other than a slight weight penility and slight shoehorning to fit them in, a HS-311 will work fine for your application.

As to engine size, there is not too much difference between a 40 and 46. Often, both are in the same case, and the larger displacement is slightly lighter. You can add a lot of power and speed to your set-up with the addition of a tuned muffler from either Performance Specialities. or Jett.

If you want to put a .46 in a Q-40, it will probably fit. The trick is getting the right mount.

JETT sells a mount with the OS 40/46 FX/AX pattern that the Tower .46 uses. It will not be interchangeable with Q-40 engines, not that you have that as a requirement.

I along with a couple of other people got Dub Jett to make us some mounts for the Thunder Tiger .40 (and .46) that are completely interchangable with a Q-40 engine on a JETT Q-40 mount. I think JETT is out-of-stock, but I have some and Kevin Matney has some. Since you're talking about an AJ-2, give Kevin a call, otherwise let me know if you want a mount.

Consider putting a TT Pro .40 in it and come race with some people in a new class called Q-40 Sport.

If you put an APC 7.4x8 pylon prop or APC 8x9 Sport prop and a Jett Stream or Performance Specialties tuned muffler on the TT Pro .40, you will get to about 150 mph, maybe a little more.

I was able to fit standard servo's in mine without any problem. Like HighPlanes said, years ago there were NO small servo's to use in F1's Q500's or Q15's and people managed to make them fit. It just takes some planning. I still use standard servo's in my quickies.

Thanks for the information guys, and I would like to race but I'm not sure if there are any Q-40 sport races in my area.

One more question. I guess these planes normally dont fly with throttles, so is there enough room for a normal fuel tank(sport maybee 6oz) and the throttle linkages? It looks like the nose and fuselage are really tight with these q40's.

Yes, it will be a tight fit, but you can do it. A 6-oz. Jett or 5-1/4-oz. Tettra bladder tank should fit in there just fine. Jett also has a tank he calls the "CG tank", which is a 6-oz. tank that is longer, flatter, and slightly tapered so it will fit nicely in the wing saddle area.

With a carburetor and throttle pushrod, you may have to cut away part of the nose ring. No problem. Even if the throttle pushrod has to come outside somewhere behind the firewall, there's no noticeable increase in air drag. And if the engine is side-mounted, the pushrod will be out of sight on the bottom of the nose.

Q-40 Sport is still pretty new, so I'm not surprised there aren't any races in your area (yet). But that could change when the other club members see you tooling around with that AJ-2.

Jeff, There is plenty of room in the A.J. for standard servos and the throttle cable. as DHG pointed out,,,the right side of your engine cut out will need to be relieved with a dremel tool to give clearence for the throttle linkage , but its hardly noticable. I have a 6OZ. Karft Hayes tank slid in behind the firewall and still have plenty of room.
