SILVERSURFER A while back we discussed your method for adjusting the needles on your carburetors in which you peak one needle then the other and make adjustments at different throttle RPM's. As I recall you would set the high end then peak the low then redo the high and low . I'm not sure of the procedure but I found your method to work very well and I was hoping you could describe it again in detail. I'm making a few minor changes (different prop, new plug, maybe a spinner change) and I didn't write down your procedure (OOPS ) the first time and I can’t seem to find it in this thread. Unfortunately I'm just getting around to setting up my plane for the summer. I have been recovering from two surgeries since February and I’m just getting back to the point where I can work on my plane. I'm hopping to get out flying next weekend. Thanks for your help.

Has anyone flown this plane at a CG of 3.25"?? How did you like it at that location?

I just got out to fly today for the first time this year. It's been a bummer spring but things are looking up. I moved the CG on the Extra 300 forward to 3 1/4" and it flies much better for me. The elevator is much less twitchy and the landings are straight away with only a slight hint of down elevator to get her to settle on the mains. I still need to tweak the motor to get the mid range set; it's burbling at 1/3 to 2/3 throttle in the air but it sounds fine on the ground. I'm going to use Silversurfer's method of adjusting the needles and see if I can get her dialed in. I'm going to try to get out after work this week and get some more flights in and see if I can't get to the point where I can finish with the fine adjustments and start to really enjoy the flying.

Sorry I didn't respond to your post until now. I was in Afghanistan for a bit and the internet was crappy along with being pretty busy. The rabbit ear prop guards fell through when I did not garner enough interest to get my wife to sit still long enough to make a few sets. I think maybe three people mentioned they would like some so that was the end of that.

I sent you a pm about engine tuning.

With lithium ions all you need to do is charge them before you put the plane away. Disconnect the battery leads so they can't discharge through the system and forget them for a year if you're so inclined. They don't self discharge like nimh or nicads. I typically leave mine unplugged for up to 6 months at a time and when I get home I just plug them in and go fly. Don't cycle lithions.

Well I finally got the Extra out for a few more flights yesterday (been a slow flying season for me ). Moving the CG forward to 3.25" seems to be working very well. I did the inverted 45-degree up test and she kept climbing on that line for a full 3-4 seconds when I cut the throttle. The DA 50 is coming along also. I have the needles almost set and it's not eating gas like it did on its first 2 or 3 flights. The last flight yesterday only used about 5 ounces for an 8-9 minute flight. I generally don’t like to fly for more than 15-16 minutes with an average around 10-12. I think I may down size my fuel tank to a 16 ounce from the stock 24 ounce I’ve been using. That will get rid of 8 oz. of excess gas I'm carrying around. Are any of you using a 16 oz tank? Next time out I'll start to work on a few maneuvers to see if I need to make ant more adjustments. I haven’t played with any mixing yet, have any of you found there to be a need for mixing on your Extra's.

Once you have the CG where you want it about the only mix worth doing on the 300 is a light rudder-elevator mix for knife edge. Perhaps aileron differential but you have to determine how she flies first. I like to make this a "switched" mix so it's only there when I desire it. Full time mixes can mess with some maneuvers so switching them can be helpful.

I'm using a 16 oz tank on a WH Yak with a zdz 50ng. I flew an IMAC contest last weekend and could get the 2 sequences done with about 1/3 tank left after shutdown.

Can one of you guys with the Extra, do me a favor and take some measurements for me? I need to know the length from the rudder hinge line to the firewall. I also need the distance from the firewall back to the center of the wing tube. Thanks in advance.

Well if you don't need them "exact" as there is a bit of "eyeballing" going on to get those two measurements....

Looks like 61" from the rudder hinge line to the firewall and 14" from center of the wing tube to the firewall.

Maybe Tom can get you the exact stuff if you need it closer than that?

That'll work Zeeb, as long as you used a tape measure! Thanks again.
