WW2 Ace -> Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/6/2006 4:30:32 AM)

This will be Build / Questions post for my "Redesigned WH 28% Extra 300". Feel free to add any questions, photos, suggestions regarding this plane.

I received the plane yesterday and I have to say it was very well packed. This latest WH came with the Fuselage and wings both double boxed[sm=thumbup.gif] (see photos below). Very nice Tom & Patty!! As near as I can tell there is no damage from shipping. The quality of this plane so far is very nice. The trim over lap looks to be good on the fuse & wings. The wing and stab tubes are snug but wont require any sanding. I use a little powdered teflon and it slides in like butter! I will begin hinging the ailerons & elevators tomorrow. So far the only flaws I can find are a very small pin hole in the trim on the rudder which I will find a graphic to cover that so it doesn't cause a rip. The other minor flaw is the stripes on the right side of the cowl don't line up exactly to the trim on the fuse side, and there are some faint swirls in the red paint where it appears slightly lighter in spots. This was also mentioned in a post by bluehawkbm (he mentioned it here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4582112 ). It doesn't overly concern me but I may try to improve the match at a later date. As has been mentioned in other posts there is a lot of room in the fuse as it is very wide. The tail wheel and landing gear (which comes polished BTW) look very nice[8D]! The elevator & ailerons are huge compared to my Edge. I haven't had a chance to check the incidences on the wing and stabe yet or the weight of any of the pieces but I'll post my findings as soon as I measure these. At first when I ordered it I wasn't sure I would like the colors but now that I see them in person I like them better than the red/white/blue scheme. The colors look like they will be very visible in the air. Overall my first impression of this plane has been very positive and I look forward to flying it for YEARS[8|] to come LOL. If you haven't all ready, see ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4513761 ) and you'll understand why I say YEARS. I will be using a lot of equipment from my Edge for this plane but one thing that I am changing is the batteries. I will be using Fromeco equipment in this plane. Here are a few photos with more to follow.

FlyinTiger -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/6/2006 9:17:00 AM)

Good luck with your build! I'm going to be building one of these babies soon, it looks like they are starting to catch on!

Keep 'em flyin'!

WW2 Ace -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 2:28:15 AM)

Any of you guys that have yours built have any photos yet of how your laying out the equipment. I'm looking for ideas on throttle servo location. I'll be using a 4800ma Fromeco receiver battery, DA50, Menz prop, 4" Dave Brown spinner, 2400ma Fromeco ignition battery and pull-pull rudder and would like to see how others may have positioned similar gear to balance.
Thanks

i've got the same plane just in the red, white, blue color scheme. i should have mine in the air in two weeks. i just about have all the gear installed in the fuse, all i have left is the tank, throtle/choke servos and receiver batterys. i will post some pics soon!!!

Tired Old Man -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 6:32:54 AM)

You get gear cuffs now, too? What a deal!

flatlandmike -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 10:17:33 AM)

I cut open one of the lightening holes on the fuel tanl tray and put the servo for the throtle in there. Theres plenty space in that area to put a servo in a perfect line with the throtle arm.

Any ideas on how to attach them without drilling holes in the landing gear? I thought about using some double sided sticky tape. I'm thinking these need to float a bit to prevent wearing the trim where they meet the fuse sides as a result of landing gear flex. Is there something I can put between the cuff and the fuse to stop the wear?

rctom -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 2:08:03 PM)

What cuffs? The plane is not supposed to come with cuffs.

You may have got a set from our 41% Extra which DOES come with cuffs.

murry -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 2:20:19 PM)

mine did also
some silicone them to the gear

marzo91 -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 2:30:48 PM)

Tom, Cuffs are included in mine too. [:D] Great looking plane. I'm going to run a Brison 3.2 with a new Vess propeller.

Tom, If you see the photos above I slid one on the LG for the photo. It matches the size of the gear and butts to the side of the fuse perfectly. Would a cuff from the 41% match a 28% that well?

Tired Old Man -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 6:12:30 PM)

Slide them up to where you want them and make a pencil mark around them. Slide them back and apply some silicone to the gear leg above the mark that will let the inside of the cuff to make contact with the silicone. Slide the cuff back up to the mark and let it sit for a day. It will hold a long, long time.

rctom -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/7/2006 9:51:15 PM)

Well, I must have more influence than I thought. I asked the cuffs be included with teh 41% Extras, I guess the factory decided to add them into the smaller one as well.

You guys should all send me 10 bucks.

TF

bluehawkbm -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/8/2006 1:38:31 AM)

Tom,

Mine also came with the cuffs

bluehawkbm -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/8/2006 1:41:58 AM)

WW2Ace,

Im with you on the red yellow black colors. I would have ordered the red white blue but Tom had already sold them out and now that I got my red yellow black, I do like it better. Both color schemes look great.

WW2 Ace -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/8/2006 6:27:59 AM)

I started hinging tonight, this is the one thing I dread about building [:'(] so I doing it first. Before I did, I weighed the main components that came with the plane. Here's how they matched up with those from Greg Cothern's. Gregs numbers are first mine are in [brackets] after his for comparison.

Fuse (bare fuse minus canopy, hatch, cowl, stab, etc) 2 lbs 14.6 oz's [2lbs 12.75oz's]
Hatch (without canopy) 7.4 oz's [7.5 oz's]
Canopy 9.2 oz's [5.75 oz's] I think Greg made an error here
Cowl 9.2 oz's [8.5 oz's]
Landing gear (without axles etc) 9.4 oz's [10.0 oz's]
Wheel Pants (bare) 2.6 oz's [3.0 oz's]
Right wing panel 1 lb 2.2 oz's [1lb 1.5 oz's]
Left wing panel 1 lb 2.2 oz's [1lb 1.75 oz's]
Right elevator/stab 4.7 oz's [4.5 oz's]
Left elevator/stab 4.2 oz's [4.5 oz's]
Rudder 3.4 oz's [3.75 oz's]
Wing tube 9 oz's [9.0 oz's]
Stab tube 1.2 oz's [1.25 oz's]
Tail Wheel assembly w/hardware 2.8 oz's [2.5 oz's]
Misc Hardware (canopy bolts, wing bolts, axles, etc) 3.9 oz's [4.0 oz's]
Landing gear cuffs Greg did not have a weight Mine [.5oz's]
Total 150 oz's (9.375 lbs). [145.25 oz's = 9lb 1.25oz's]

Also weighed tonight:
DA50 With slimline pitts muffler, Ignition, battery switch fuel line, and wire cover to protect from cowl rubbing [4lb 4.0oz's]
Menz 22-8 prop [4.0oz's]
Fromeco Batteries and reg's [13oz's]

With these weights totaled up I at roughly 14lbs 6.25oz's and I still need to add (4) 5945 servos, (1) 5955, a throttle servo, linkages, servo arms, pull-pull, control horns, a receiver, spinner, gas tank, padding & straps, wheels and fuel proofing the fire wall.
Now the trick is doing it and trying to keep it under 17lbs[;)]

rctom -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/8/2006 2:42:57 PM)

My rough calculations put the additional gear at about 2 lb. 2 oz. making flying weight about 16 lb. 8 oz. or thereabouts.

You are carrying far more battery than you need. I weighed my 1550 mah lipo that I am putting in my new 105 in. Sukhoi, it's 3.25 oz. including the regulator. Double that for redundancy and it's still only 6 1/2 oz. almost a half pound less that what you are using.

That half pound puts you within spitting distance of 16 lbs. which is where I have said it would be.

Tom, the 13oz's for batteries and reg's is for the following:
(1) 4800 LiIon 6.6 oz's for RX
(1) Super Regulated Reliaswitch (RX switch and regulator) 1.5 oz's
(1) 2400 LiIon 3.3 oz's for RX
(1) standard regulator (Ignition regulator) 1.5 oz's

I assume with your system I would still need to add an aditional 3.25 oz's for the ignition battery/reg correct? If I can keep it between 16.5 & 17 without adding CF I'll be happy! Down the road I may invest in CF wing & stab tubes and a CF spinner. BTW how much does the DB 4" spinner weigh?

rctom -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/8/2006 7:32:08 PM)

You have about 3 times as much power as you need. 3000mah is plenty (at least for me, I don't try to fly 10 flights in a day). The 4" spinner weighs about 4 oz. I believe.

Having that much battery is like having a 100 gallon tank in your car, what's the point?

WW2 Ace -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/9/2006 2:19:06 AM)

Finished Hinging the elevators tonight, three surfaces to go. I got my spinner today so tomorrow I'm going to take a break from the hinging and try to get the motor mounted. Do any of you guys that have finished building have any info yet on how you had to arrange the equipment to balance the plane (photos anyone)? Anyone running a DA50 with a pitts muffler? Were you able to balance just by moving things around.

Redneck Shaun -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/9/2006 3:21:32 AM)

Yea, I got mine to balance at 3.5" with a DA50. I have 2 Fromeco 2400MAH LI-ION's behind the rudder servo (I built a shelf with the spare wood that came with the kit) And the other battery for the ignition was zip-tied to the motor box. I mounted the throttle servo by building a small box and mounting it, on the tray separating the fuel tank and the canister dept. The choke servo I mounted on it's side right next to it.

very true..I have 2 1400 Nimh's and can get at least 8 12 min flights with plenty left over

BadBoy__MadMikey -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/9/2006 3:50:41 AM)

i'm going to be running 2 thunder power 2100 2 cell prolites on the receiver, yes i'm running two batterys on one receiver and i'm running a tanic 2 cell 1550 pack on ignition.
i ordered my motor, muffler, prop today from TBM.. and then called tom and got my hardware kit and spinner on the way too. all i need to finish is to go pick up my order i have on hold at my LHS for the rudder servo and receiver batterys. i hope to madien her next weekend. wish it was done now cause i have a contest this weekend!!!!

RCFREAK -> RE: Redesigned 28% Extra 300 Build / Questions (8/9/2006 4:44:15 AM)

OK, i have a question here about LiPo batts. Im currently using a Fromeco 4800mah LiIo pack, i was going to upgrade to their new "Peerless" since my Fromeco batt was getting a bit old. Now i hear people are using Lithium Polymer packs for their recievers
whats the advantage over Lithium ion. I heard it wasnt good to use LiPo's on recievers even with regulator? Whats happening
