That's sure a vintage ntro. I too got into RC by an on-road. See the following link:

This is not mine, I still have my R40. This one is just like my set-up and even the 3PK is exactly like mine (except his does'nt have the DSM module). I would post pics but I spent all my $$ on RC. Don't have anything left over for a camera.

Had my first nitro been anything other than a Savage 25, I'd have probably bowed out of the hobby by now. I've since had an E-zilla, Kyosho FW-05T on-roader, Hot Bodies Lightning GT, a Hot Bodies Minizilla, and of course the as yet unused Savage X.. All the rest are just OK, but the Savage was - to use drug parlance - some damn good s h i t ........ Thus, the addiction..

My first nitro powered vehicle was a Cox PT19 trainer line control plane. I got the in about 1965.

My first nitro powered car was a Kyosho ZR-1 Corvette. I still have it and, believe it or not, it still runs great. I don't run it very much though because parts are nearly impossable to find.

Sounds like you and I started about the same time. My first nitro was a Cox P 40 War Hawk in or around 1965. My first nitro car was a Cox Sting Ray tether car in about the same year. Then a Cox dum buggy in the early 1970’s.

I've been around nitro engines, model building and RC my whole life. My dad was building line control planes as early as the early 50's. My brother still has two of those old planes (wingspan of about 4') hanging on his garage wall. He also had line control cars. We have one old alumnimum Indy style car that I think dates from the very late 40's. It's all original but doesn't run anymore. When I was around 10 dad bought my brother and I a set of the PT-19 trainers, showed us how to operate them, how to fix them and the chores we had to do to afford the fuel for them. I've been playing with nitro and rc stuff ever since. I've currently got cars, buggies, MT's, ST's, boats, planes and a heli. Both electric and nitro stuff too, it's all fun.

I guess my point is that it's a fun hobby that can keep you intrested for years and years and years.
