Here's how the previous owner set up the nosewheel steering on mine. Just epoxied a ply plate to the side of the retract & epoxied the servo to that.

A bit rough for my liking but it's all glued with Hysol so I'd probably destroy everything if I tried to pull it apart & re do everything. - John.

why dont you get springair retracts at retracts.com they are whay better imo about 150 for the set with air suport complete. if your going to use wire landing gear the 101hd's are the ones you need.If using eleos the 701's .these include firwall mount nose retract

I'd be OK with trying Spring Air retracts, but how well does the firewall-mounted nose unit fit in the retract-ready Bobcat that is apparently designed for a rail-mounted unit? I've never used pneumatic retracts before so I'm a little afraid of buying totally the wrong bits. The retracts.com website is a little short in info for first-timers like myself. There aren't too many people around here that will pay to take my mistakes off my hands!

As I understand it, you can't install wire struts now and retro-fit oleos later, and I simply can't afford to pay for the 701s and a set of struts right now, so I'll probably go for the 101s instead.

every retract requires some modification to fit period the 701s and the robarts 520s are the same mounting size. with the exception of the nose retract on either

    Angus,
I originally purchased the Spring-Air 305's for mine, which is the rail mounted nose gear. I put Robart 3/8th inch struts on mine although if you are strapped for cash the 305's should be just fine without them.

My Bobcat as not the retract ready version so I had a lot of work to do to mount them. I tried to mount my nose gear on a motor mount and then mount it to the bulkhead. But when I went to mount the nose gear the bulkhead was not square. So I ended up getting the 305 nose gear which is the bulkhead mount and used a wedge plate to adjust the angle so it was all square. With the wedge plate in there was not enough space for my motor mount idea so I needed he bulkhead one .

If you get the 305's you should not have any real problems. The Spring-airs install fairly easily and this was the first set of retracts I ever did. If I had the retract ready version the job would have been even easier.

Ok, now I'm confused. If I buy a set of retract units that come with wire legs (like the 305s, 101s or Robart 520W1s) can I later replace the wire legs with oleo struts? I thought that if a set or retracts was built for wire it could not accommodate oleos and if it was built for oleos it could not accommodate wire legs. I've never seen a set of pneumatic retracts. There is nobody around here who has a set I can go and look at.

    Angus,
My intention was not to confuse you . Take a look at this thread. click here for the thread

Look at posts 3 to 14 and you will see what this person did. He did not use Spring-airs but the process is the same. This is what I used as a guide when I did mine.

No idea. The Bobcat I have was the fixed gear version & converted by the previous owner. - John.

I can't speak for the Spring Airs but the Robarts can be converted to Robo Struts anytime you wish. You simply cut the wire to the correct length and secure the struts to the wire stubs. I would imagine the same is true for any wire retract.

Ok, other than $40 in price, can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 101s and the 301s? The product photos at retracts.com for these two items are exactly the same.

    Angus,
The 300's have a lower profile, I have used the 100 series on my Bobcat and powered it with a small turbine, with very good success. I did have the early model that was not retract ready but they worked fine.

Completed my Yellow Bobcat 50 today. Yellow Bobcat 50, Tower 75 engine, Zinger 12x6P prop, Robart W1 retracts and Spektrun DX7 radio. This is my second attempt at this aircraft. The first one I had was distroyed on the maiden takeoff due to engine flame out. The engine flamed out on takeoff at approx. 10 to 15 feet above ground and the plane just rolled off to the right side and went in on the nose making mince meat of the fuselage. The first one I had was a fixed gear version and I was just going to purchase a new fuselage and canopy but the new retract version went on sale at almost the same price as the repair parts. I took everything out of the old plane and gave it to someone at our flying field that thinks he can somehow repair it. I hope I have a bit more luck with this one and should be doing the maiden within the next couple of weeks.

Best wishes and good safe flying.
