Need a little help here, I been having problems with this motor overheating.

Plane: GSP Hellcat ( I cut a air whole in the bottom of the cowl as well)
Plug: OS F Plug
Fuel: Byron 10% 18-20% oil
Prop: 15.75 x 13 3-blade (APC)

When I try to tune the engine I am only getting 4600-4700 rpms, then the motor quits. I have richened the low end almost to 6 turns out, the idle gets better, but have no power on full throttle. What are the 'start' settings for low and high end needle valve? I problem have gotten 2-3 tanks thru this motor trying to get it to run right were it dont overheat. help!

Hi Zagzoo

sorry to hear you are having problems with your engine. This is not normal and should be easily cured. Firstly, what is the serial number of your engine?

You mention you have run 2-3 tanks through the motor. Have you run the engine in before installing it in your model? We would always recommend running the engine in on a test stand for 1-2 hours prior to installation.

Secondly, with the SP engines you are better off using a fuel with castor oil
eg. byron premium sports 4-cycle 10% nitro, or Omega 10%

Thirdly with regard to the cooling, it is possible that the engine cut out is not being caused by overheating but either an engine problem or the needle settings. Have you taken the engine apart before? (if the engine is mistimed, you will not get the necessary power).
If it is a cooling problem, I would try and get the engine working without the cowl firstly. If you can get it performing well, then we can address any cooling issues. If you cannot get the engine working without the cowl, then something else is wrong.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Laurenne

Thanks for the reply.

Well the first thing is, I have the engine mounted on the model but only have test ran the engine with the cowl off.

Second thing I just realized is I bought 10% 2-stroke, instead of 4 stroke fuel. (I am picking some 4 stroke up today) Let me run it with the right fuel this time and Ill post back if the engine is running better.

What are the factory settings for the low & high end needle settings?

Thanks
Frank

Hi

The fuel could certainly be causing the problem as 4-strokes run much hotter than 2-strokes.

With regard to factory settings for the 120SP, these are only starting points as it depends on fuel, plug etc
Main needle - screw the needle in fully and then unscrew 1 3/4 turns
Idle needle - screw the needle in fully and then unscrew 3 1/2 - 4 turns with the throttle open

I hope this helps
Best regards
Laurenne
