Gas isn't too expensive, this is a test, just because I can :) Model fuel is primarily methonal, with oil added, and then nitro added. Has anybody used a nitroless fuel in a heli? Why does everyone go to 15 or 30% nitro?

I have heard about people mixing their own fuels, and it sounds fun. I know commercial oil packages are available, but has anybody used anything else? There is a tremendous two stroke aftermarket for dirtbikes and stuff like that, but it seems like all that oil is geared towards petrol, rather than methanol. Methanol is pretty easy to find around here, and nitro isn't, so something nitroless might be the ticket just for the heck of it. Post your comments, pot shots, and ideas please. Thanks.

Yes, nitroless fuel produces less power, Thats why everyone flies 15 - 30% You use less oil and lean out the engine more. Average numbers are.
0% nitro; 16%oil; 84% meth. - Light flying
15% nitro; 18%oil; 67% meth. - Everyday flying
30% nitro; 22%oil; 48% meth. - Sport flying

Also, the more nitro there is, The richer you must run the engine, and the faster the gas burns. You can get about 18-20 minutes per tank on 0% but look for about 10-12 minutes on 30%.

Well, I can't vouch for any of this, but this is what I have found:

As well as BIGRCR's generous post on Runryder:

I run my own fuel in my helicopters and airplanes. Have been doing this for years and get great consistancy.

I mix ingredients that I obtain from a local go kart supply company. They supply me with good quality moisture free methanol and nitromethane as well as the oils that I use for the mixing. Usually I buy Morgan oil and/or Klotz w/Technoplate (alcohol formula).

I mix by volume with a graduated cylinder. I use 20% oil content, this works out to 25.6 ounces of oil per gallon. I usually mix 10% nitro and this equals 12.8 ounces per gallon of nitro ( 25.6 ounces at 20%, 38.4 ounces at 30%). In other words a gallon of 10% nitro fuel / 20% oil fuel contains 25.6 ounces of oil, 12.8 ounces of nitro and the balance of methanol is 89.6 ounces = 128 ounces total. The math is simple for any other combination. No nitro fuel would be 25.6 ounces of oil and the balance (102.4 ounces) of methanol.

In a hurry I also buy a gallon of 30% nitro commercial fuel and cut it with Klotz (or Morgan) and methanol to make 3 gallons of 10% fuel.

Why? I enjoy doing it. I wind up mixing 10 to 20 gallons of fuel at a time at about $8.75 per gallon for 10% fuel and it is all the same and consistant.

So good luck, I'm with you. BTW, the part about cutting fuel sounds really interesting. If you could buy high nitro (like Tower hobbies 40%, $95.69 for four gallons) you could easily cut it down to 10% or so... Each gallon, at 23.92 per gallon, could make 4 10% gallons. That would be $5.98 per 1/4 gallon, plus 3/4 gallon of methanol, at 2.50 per gallon for a total of $1.88. THat would be $7.86 per gallon, plus the cost of oil... If you bought your own nitro, it could be even cheaper. 100% nitro is 28.00 per gallon (plus hazmat on your order) from FHS supply. Or buy a Webra and forget the nitro mess :) Good luck, don't blame me if it blows up. Whoopee.
